Supply chain management (SCM) environments are often dynamic markets providing a plethora of information, either complete or incomplete. It is, therefore, evident that such environments demand intelligent solutions, which can perceive variations and act in order to achieve maximum revenue. To do so, they must also provide some sophisticated mechanism for exploiting the full potential of the environments they inhabit. Advancing on the way autonomous solutions usually deal with the SCM process, we have built a robust and highly-adaptable mechanism for efficiently dealing with all SCM facets, while at the same time incorporating a module that exploits data mining technology in order to forecast the price of the winning bid in a given order and, thus, adjust its bidding strategy. The paper presents our agent, Mertacor, and focuses on the forecasting mechanism it incorporates, aiming to optimal agent efficiency

In this paper, a new kind of brain topography is introduced and applied to data from four patients affected by intractable epilepsy. Experience has shown that the short term maximum Lyapunov exponent (STLmax) is a robust parameter when optimized for the dynamical analysis of the electroencephalography (EEG). The objective of this work is to map the spatial distribution of STLmax over time. STLmax is estimated from segments of each channel of long term continuous scalp EEG recordings and a movie of the STLmax segment estimates is created over the head. Movies allow for a simple visualization of which electrodes are related to the highest or lowest chaoticity for the longest time. We found out that the interictal epileptiform activity is related to the highest STLmax level, whereas the focal area is related to low STLmax levels during either the interictal and preictal stages

High reliability requirements in many modern applications make soft errors an extremely important design aspect and pose new challenges in nanometer technologies. In addition, timing faults that may escape fabrication tests become a real concern in high complexity, high frequency designs. To confront this situation, a concurrent error detection and correction circuit and technique are presented in this work. Their application in pipeline architectures is analyzed and the pipeline error recovery mechanism is illustrated. The proposed scheme is characterized by low silicon area requirements, compared to earlier approaches, and the need of only a single clock cycle for pipeline recovery.

Switched-Beam Arrays (SBAs) are considered as an attractive alternative to fully adaptive arrays, mostly due to easy installation and inexpensive maintenance. In this paper, a new technique is proposed in order to design dual-band switched-beam dipole arrays. The scope of the proposed technique is to design arrays with balanced radiation characteristics at both frequency bands. This is accomplished by joint optimization of the array's architectural characteristics (topology, elements length and radius) and excitation coefficients, for operation at both frequency bands, while properly exploiting mutual coupling among array elements. Numerical results are presented in the case of a uniform, circular, eight-element dipole array, operating at 2.4GHz and 3.5GHz, and excellent agreement to design considerations is demonstrated. Furthermore, a technique for the design of an appropriate dual-band dipole is presented.

A simple, efficient optimization algorithm based on space mapping (SM) is presented. It utilizes input SM to reduce the misalignment between the coarse and fine models of the optimized object over a region of interest, and output space mapping (OSM) to ensure matching of response and first-order derivatives between the mapped coarse model and the fine model at the current iteration point. We also consider an enhanced version in which the input SM coefficients are frequency dependent. The performance of our new algorithms is comparable with the recently published SMIS algorithm when applied to a benchmark problem. In comparison with SMIS, the models presented are simple and have a small number of parameters that need to be extracted. The new algorithm is applied to the optimization of a coupled-line band-pass filter

While the traditional data shipping systems use physical information to organize data, a newer data caching technique maintains both associated answers (data items) of previous queries and their meaning (purpose). This form of information description is called semantic description, and it makes it possible to reason about and derive knowledge from the given description. In a distributed heterogeneous environment, such as the mobile environment, the semantic data caching paradigm is an important technique for improving the performance of wireless data dissemination systems. Data caching performance depends heavily on the replacement policy being used for the cache management. However, future location ambiguity, limited client resources and frequent client disconnections make cache management a challenge. This paper proposes a future location-aware cache replacement policy to manage a semantic cache. The proposed replacement policy uses the validity of the data fetched from the server and the neighboring locations to decide which of the cache entries is less likely to be needed in the future, and therefore, a good candidate to be evicted when cache space is needed. The replacement policy's preference for cached items to be evicted is modelled as a general function that declines with distance between the cell the candidate for replacement's cached item is bounded to and the query's bound cell. For better efficiency the overall replacement granularity is dynamically achieved along three levels: ring, cell and data item. Simulation study of the proposed approach shows that it outperforms both the least recently used (LRU) and furthest away replacement (FAR) schemes, where only temporal locality is considered. Moreover, the proposed scheme is easier to implement than the industry standard policies

Existing ATM networks are designed to support wire-line users with fixed locations;moreover current ATM protocols do not implement Hand-off and Connection Setup functions that are required to support wireless users. Complementary Signaling is proposed to implement connection setup and handoff functions in an ATM network context to support mobility of wireless users. Complementary Signaling uses switched ATM connections to encapsulate mobility related signaling messages between wireless-to-wire line inter-working nodes at the edges of the backbone ATM network and does not require any changes to the existing ATM protocols.

The present paper deals with a new proposed algorithm to optimize the handover operational procedure. This algorithm assigns priority to the handover calls over the new call attempts and it also puts the blocked handover calls in a finite storage queue. To calculate the total handover forced termination probability, we first try to find out the probability a handover call in the queue to be blocked, by finding a suitable function for the mean service time at each position in the queue. In order to have an effective system, there must not be allowed for a call to remain in a buffer position more than a maximum waiting time threshold. If the call mean service time at each queue position is found to be greater than this threshold, this call will be blocked. Simulation results show that this scheme provides satisfactory results for both types of calls Quality of service is obtained by introducing a threshold in the maximum waiting time of a handover call in the queue. In case the handover call mean service time at each queue position is found to be greater than this threshold, this call can not be serviced by this cell. This innovative idea introduces a more flexible traffic management since it enables a delay prediction in case of congestion.

This paper investigates necessary conditions for stability of nonlinear systems made of feedback interconnection of two iISS subsystems. The integral input-to-state stability (iISS) is a dissipative property which includes the input-to-state stability (ISS) as a special case. It is proved that at least one subsystem needs to be ISS for global asymptotic stability of the feedback loop when two subsystems are not completely specified and only their supply rates are available. In contrast, the situation where ODEs describing subsystems are available does not exclude pairs of subsystems which are only iISS. This paper further investigates necessary conditions for global asymptotic stability, and proves that the nonlinear small-gain condition is necessary in the case of unspecified iISS subsystems described with supply rates. When one of the two subsystems is given as a specific ODE, the nonlinear small-gain condition is no longer necessary, while the linear small-gain condition is necessary in the case of linear systems. For nonlinear systems, the necessity recovers only if the supply rate fits the known subsystem tightly in the shape as well as the magnitude
