Adaptive Cubature Strong Tracking Information Filter Using Variational Bayesian Method

For most practical nonlinear state estimation problems, the conventional nonlinear filters do not usually work well for some cases, such as inaccurate system model, sudden change of state-interested and unknown variance of measurement noise. In this paper, an adaptive cubature strong tracking information filter using variational Bayesian (VB) method is proposed to cope with these complex cases. Firstly, the strong tracking filtering (STF) technology is used to integrally improve performance of cubature information filter (CIF) aiming at the first two cases and an iterative scheme is presented to effectively evaluate a strong tracking fading factor. Secondly, the VB method is introduced to iteratively evaluate the unknown variance of measurement noise. Finally, the novel adaptive cubature information filter is obtained by perfectly combining the STF technology with the VB method, where the variance estimation provided by the VB method guarantees normal running of the strong tracking functionality.

The behaviour of cells can be controlled by various microenvironments such as nanostructured cell-culture substrates with controlled nanotopography and chemical properties. One of promising substrates for controlled cell growth is a solid substrate comprised of synthetic one-dimensional nanostructures such as polymer nanofibers, carbon-based nanotubes/nanofibers, and inorganic nanowires. Such nanotube/nanowire structures have a similar dimension as extracellular matrix fibers, and their nanotopography and chemical properties can be easily controlled, which expands their possible applications in controlling the growth and differentiation of cells. This paper provides a concise review on the recent applications of solid substrates based on synthetic nanowires/nanotubes for controlled cell growth and differentiation. © 2014, Baik et al.;licensee Springer.

Synchronization of coupled oscillators is a pervasive theme of multi-disciplinary research. Focused on circuit-theoretic applications, in this paper, we derive sufficient conditions for global asymptotic synchronization in a system of identical nonlinear circuits coupled through linear time-invariant (LTI) electrical networks. The nonlinear circuits are composed of a parallel combination of passive LTI circuit elements and a nonlinear voltage-dependent current source with finite gain. The terminals of the nonlinear circuits are coupled through LTI networks characterized by either identical per-unit-length impedances or identical effective impedances between any two terminals. This setup is motivated by a recently proposed control strategy for inverters in microgrids. We analyze synchronization by means of an input-output analysis of a coordinate-transformed system that emphasizes signal differences. To apply the synchronization analysis to a broad class of networks, we leverage recent results on Kron reduction-a circuit reduction and transformation procedure that reveals the interactions of the nonlinear circuits. We illustrate our results with simulations in networks of coupled Chua's circuits.

Current over-provisioned and multi-tier data centre networks (DCN) deploy rigid control and management platforms, which are not able to accommodate the ever-growing workload driven by the increasing demand of high-performance data centre (DC) and cloud applications. In response to this, the EC FP7 project LIGHTNESS (Low Latency and High Throughput Dynamic Network Infrastructures for High Performance Datacentre Interconnects) is proposing a new flattened optical DCN architecture capable of providing dynamic, programmable, and highly available DCN connectivity services while meeting the requirements of new and emerging DC and cloud applications. LIGHTNESS DCN comprises all-optical switching technologies (Optical Packet Switching (OPS) and Optical Circuit Switching (OCS)) and hybrid Top-of-the-Rack (ToR) switches, controlled and operated by a Software Defined Networking (SDN) based control plane for enhanced programmability of heterogeneous network functions and protocols. Harnessing the power of optics enables DCs to effectively cope with the high-performance applications' demands. The programmability and flexibility provided by the SDN based control plane allow to fully exploit the benefits of the LIGHTNESS multi-technology optical DCN, while provisioning on-demand, dynamic, flexible and highly resilient network services inside DCs. © 2014 IEEE.

Inelastic light scattering in crystals has historically been treated as a spatially incoherent process, giving rise to incoherent optical radiation. Here we demonstrate that Raman scattering can be spatially coherent, in which case it depends on the dimensionality and symmetry of the scatterer. Using near-field spectroscopy, we measure a correlation length of ∼30 nm for the optical phonons in graphene, the results varying with vibrational symmetries and spatial confinement of the phonons.

We report on the observation of collective radiative decay, or superradiance, of cyclotron resonance (CR) in high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases in GaAs quantum wells using time-domain terahertz magnetospectroscopy. The decay rate of coherent CR oscillations increases linearly with the electron density in a wide range, which is a hallmark of superradiant damping. Our fully quantum mechanical theory provides a universal formula for the decay rate, which reproduces our experimental data without any adjustable parameter. These results firmly establish the many-body nature of CR decoherence in this system, despite the fact that the CR frequency is immune to electron-electron interactions due to Kohn’s theorem.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) desktop grid computing systems circumvent the performance bottleneck and limited scalability of centralized Grid architectures resulting in a massively scalable and robust system. We have designed a set of protocols that implement a distributed, decentralized desktop grid via P2P techniques. Incoming jobs having different types of resource requirements are matched with system nodes through proximity in an N-dimensional resource space. In this paper, we address problems that arise from static load balancing mechanisms for assigning jobs to nodes that can arise for various reasons, including the heterogeneity of the available nodes or the jobs to be run, and from stale information in the P2P system. We greatly improve upon our prior work by providing lightweight yet effective dynamic load balancing mechanisms to overcome load imbalances caused by the limitations of the initial static job assignment scheme. Unlike other systems, we can effectively support resource constraints of jobs during the course of redistribution since we simplify the problem of matchmaking through building a multi-dimensional resource space and mapping jobs and nodes to this space. Throughout extensive simulation results, we show that dynamic load balancing makes the overall system more scalable, by improving system throughput and response time with low additional overhead. © 2013 ACM.

This panel explores the many roles of data analytics in today's cross-domain collaborations. In some instances, cross-domain analytics are required to understand big data. In others, big data holds the key to understanding and evaluating how people collaborate across domains. Panelists will present their experiences with big data and collaboration, and discussion will be guided by the following questions: How does “understanding data through collaboration” relate to “understanding collaboration through data”? What modeling tools, visualizations, abstractions, and metrics can help facilitate collaborative discovery from big data? To what extent should these tools be tailored to specific domains or groups? How much do we need to know about another domain or group before we can intersect domain specific activities that constitute the context to various analytical processes, and cross-pollinate ideas for deeper analytics? What optimally would that other domain or group need to know about us? How much of this knowledge can we extract from data?
