Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with full-duplex relays (FDRs) are pivotal in overcoming connectivity challenges by dynamically establishing effective communication channels. However, despite their potential in network performance via trajectory optimization, integrating energy consumption models for UAV-mounted FDRs remains unexplored, crucial for trajectory design adhering to existing energy constraints. To this end, we introduce an energy-aware trajectory optimization framework to maximize network performance and user fairness within the UAV's energy constraints. Specifically, we present a detailed energy consumption model describing the operational needs of UAV-mounted FDRs and formulate a joint time-division multiple access (TDMA) user scheduling-UAV trajectory optimization problem considering the power dynamics of UAV-mounted FDRs. Finally, our simulation results highlight the role of energy awareness in achieving optimal trajectory and scheduling, contributing to UAV-mounted FDRs' performance in future networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Market-Based Environmental Policies in the Power Sector: State of the Art and Future research Needs

Purpose of Review: So-called Green New Deals aim to decarbonise the power sector via market-based instruments. Consequently, engineering-economic models for analysing the sustainable-energy transition have proliferated. This review categorises existing approaches and identifies areas for extending the state of the art. Recent Findings: We cluster the extant literature into two groups: engineering/operational research (M1) and environmental economics (M2). While M1 focuses on the power sector’s technical and spatio-temporal aspects, M2’s emphasis is on incentives and externalities. Depending on the nature of the research question, either perspective (or both) may be suitable. Summary: Since the envisaged electrification of the wider economy implies tighter coupling between formerly distinct sectors, e.g., power and heat, both M1 and M2 will have to adapt to the new paradigm in terms of methodology and application areas. Here, eliciting coordinating mechanisms, enhancing algorithms for solving hierarchical models, soft linking bottom-up and top-down models, and crafting robust environmental policy in face of uncertainty over externalities are some of the vistas for future research. © 2023, The Author(s).

All-optical image classification through unknown random diffusers using a single-pixel diffractive network

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is an important non-invasive technique for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases (CVD). After acquiring the patients' raw ECG signal data, signal processing is essential for the diagnosis. Conventional ECG signal processing is usually performed serially, which takes a long time to process signals with large amounts of data. In this study, we have proposed a GPGPU-based algorithm acceleration system to improve the efficiency of ECG signal processing. This system utilizes OpenCL for parallel algorithm development on GPGPU. GPGPU executes certain steps in the QRS complex detection algorithm via parallel computing, thereby accelerating the algorithmic process. Experimental results showed that the system achieved a speedup of 1.279 compared to serial computing when processing 39 ECG signal sequences in parallel. In addition, our system has been equipped with a progressive transmission mechanism and a function that intelligently determines whether an algorithm can be accelerated. These features make this system practical not only in biomedical signal processing but also in engineering and research fields with large amounts of data. © 2024 IEEE.

This document presents a real case study evaluating the optimal design for installation of a battery energy storage system (BESS) together with a photovoltaic system (PV). The selected case study was the UNIFEI campus in Itajubá-MG, Brazil, supplied by the Brazilian distribution utility CEMIG. The tariff structure in Brazil is essentially classified in two groups: group A for customers supplied in medium, high voltages, and underground systems and group B, supplied in low voltage systems. UNIFEI is supplied at 13.8 kV medium voltage level, thus classified as group A4, and with the time of use (TOU) tariff 'Green Tariff', i.e. with different energy prices for peak and off-peak periods and a single price value for power demand. Therefore, based on the campus energy bills, it was developed and applied an approach using the software HOMER® - Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources to calculate the demand power and energy size for the battery energy storage system(s) using ferrous lithium batteries mainly focusing in saving electricity generated by the PV systems during the day to supply electrical energy during peak hours at night, thus avoiding high electricity prices from the utility. Then, it was evaluated the possible technical and economic impacts. This paper contributes to the global issue on sustainable development, taking universities as living labs in energy transition. © 2024 IEEE.

Coordinated vehicle-to-grid(V2G)control strategies can sustain essential loads of an energy system during islanding,thereby increasing *** this context,this paper investigates the resilience enhancement benefits of smart V2G control,the value of electric vehicle(EV)owner cooperation on system resilience,as well as the complementary effects of PV and EV interaction in an urban multi-energy microgrid(MEMG).By using a rolling horizon approach to optimize day-ahead operation of the MEMG and subsequently dispatching EVs,uncertainties in outage start time,EV arrival/departure times,and initial state of charge(SOC)are *** show that smart V2G control can provide a substantial essential load curtailment reduction compared to a non-EV scenario,meanwhile,non-coordinated grid-to-vehicle(G2V)operation was shown to slightly burden the system with a slight increase in non-essential load *** into the influence of EV cooperation on resilience showed that a high percentage of system-prioritized(SP)EVs could help greatly further reduce essential load curtailment compared to individual-prioritized(IP)***,the complementary benefits of smart V2G control and PV were demonstrated,showing a reduction in both PV and essential load curtailments with increasing numbers of ***,the application of smart V2G control,especially with cooperation of EV owners,can drive significant resilience enhancement during islanding,while further benefits can be obtained through having a sufficient number of EVs to utilize high PV penetration.

In ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of materials an essential step in characterizing an ultrasonic signal is decomposing the patterns of multiple interfering echoes. The Chirplet Transform (CT) is a powerful method to analyze the echoes in an ultrasonic signal. However, CT analysis is computationally heavy and impractical. Motivated by achieving real-time execution of the CT this research presents a speed-optimized implementation of the chirplet functions on FPGA. Chirplet echo generation used in Fast Chirplet Decomposition (FCD) Algorithm for ultrasonic signal analysis necessitates the frequent generation of chirplet functions with a 6-degree of freedom associated with chirplet parameters including the amplitude scaler;the time of arrival;the Gaussian envelope scaler;the phase of the chirplet;the center frequency and the frequency sweep. By minimizing the processing time of the chirplet generation, the FCD algorithm can be implemented efficiently on FPGA System-on-Chip (SoC). This study presents the hardware realization of the chirplet function on FPGA which is 37 times faster compared to using a Teensy 4.0 microcontroller, and 146 times faster than a highly popular Raspberry Pi 4.0 single board computer. © 2023 IEEE.

Ultrafast 3D imaging is indispensable for visualizing complex and dynamic biological *** scanning-based techniques necessitate an inherent trade-off between acquisition speed and space-bandwidth product(SBP).Emerging single-shot 3D wide-field techniques offer a promising alternative but are bottlenecked by the synchronous readout constraints of conventional CMOS systems,thus restricting data throughput to maintain high SBP at limited frame *** address this,we introduce EventLFM,a straightforward and cost-effective system that overcomes these challenges by integrating an event camera with Fourier light field microscopy(LFM),a state-of-theart single-shot 3D wide-field imaging *** event camera operates on a novel asynchronous readout architecture,thereby bypassing the frame rate limitations inherent to conventional CMOS *** further develop a simple and robust event-driven LFM reconstruction algorithm that can reliably reconstruct 3D dynamics from the unique spatiotemporal measurements captured by *** results demonstrate that EventLFM can robustly reconstruct fast-moving and rapidly blinking 3D fluorescent samples at kHz frame ***,we highlight EventLFM’s capability for imaging of blinking neuronal signals in scattering mouse brain tissues and 3D tracking of GFP-labeled neurons in freely moving *** believe that the combined ultrafast speed and large 3D SBP offered by EventLFM may open up new possibilities across many biomedical applications.
