Tube thoracostomy (chest tube insertion) is a surgical procedure that treats pneumothorax, a potentially life threatening condition where air accumulates between the chest wall and the lungs. The literature reports high complication rates for this procedure, including accidental fatality due to poor manual depth control during tool insertion. We hypothesize that an instrumented needle-holder could help operators recognize pleural puncture and improve depth control, and we present a puncture-detection experiment that contributes toward this goal. An operator manually inserted a bevel-tip needle into ex vivo porcine ribs and through the parietal pleura via a sensorized percutaneous device that records position, force, and videos. We use this rich dataset of 63 insertions to thoroughly test four previously published data-driven puncture-detection (DDPD) algorithms against two new real-time algorithms: a custom recursive digital filter with coefficients optimized for our application, and a difference equation that compares standard deviations between adjacent sliding windows. Our algorithms achieve a precision (true positives over total identified punctures) of 23% and 22%, respectively, while the precision of existing DDPD algorithms ranges from 0% to 21%. Despite these performance improvements, our results show the limitations of DDPD algorithms and motivate new methods for detecting pleural membrane punctures in thoracostomy. © 2018 IEEE.

Fog computing is a key enabling technology of 6G systems as it provides quick and reliable computing,and data storage services which are required for several 6G *** Intelligence(AI)algorithms will be an integral part of 6G systems and efficient task offloading techniques using fog computing will improve their performance and *** this paper,the focus is on the scenario of Partial Offloading of a Task to Multiple Helpers(POMH)in which larger tasks are divided into smaller subtasks and processed in parallel,hence expediting task ***,using POMH presents challenges such as breaking tasks into subtasks and scaling these subtasks based on many interdependent factors to ensure that all subtasks of a task finish simultaneously,preventing resource ***,applying matching theory to POMH scenarios results in dynamic preference profiles of helping devices due to changing subtask sizes,resulting in a difficult-to-solve,externalities *** paper introduces a novel many-to-one matching-based algorithm,designed to address the externalities problem and optimize resource allocation within POMH ***,we propose a new time-efficient preference profiling technique that further enhances time optimization in POMH *** performance of the proposed technique is thoroughly evaluated in comparison to alternate baseline schemes,revealing many advantages of the proposed *** simulation findings indisputably show that the proposed matching-based offloading technique outperforms existing methodologies in the literature,yielding a remarkable 52 reduction in task latency,particularly under high workloads.

Background: Recently, e-learning has become a very basic, integral part of technology-based learning. Wide trends are increasing day by day because of the demands and its usage based on working remotely due to highly penetrated mobile handheld devices and digital media. The smart campus infrastructure has played a vital role to its full extent towards Z millennium students in the 20th century. The teaching and learning accessibility depends on terms of various cost-based afforda-ble platforms, either with synchronous learning or asynchronous mode of learning. Methods: The current patent research explores the changeling leading to infrastructural reforms as per the need for digital media for e-learning during and after COVID-19 spreads. The perspectives in 2 forms of research study are: 1st working on infrastructural needs and demands for the smart campuses and online learning challenges and 2nd is working on platforms technology utilization for better accessible resources for all learners. This work studied different aspects during and after COVID-19, leading to the importance of uninterrupted internet access, phone, hardware and relia-bility, etc. In this work, the importance of gamification study and flipped classrooms for enhancing learner performance to highly engage them in learning environments focused research model on learner engagement on Gamified perceiving study with Smart PLS-SEM was investigated. Promoting sustainability in its entirety through knowledge transfer and contributions to address various challenges in the redesign of learners' syllabi to meet educational needs, emphasizing online learning to integrate various modes of learner platforms, personalized teaching and learn-ing, peer-to-peer communication for learner enhancement, and student engagement through gami-fication are studied. Cost-Optimized Task Offloading for Dependent Applications in Collaborative Edge and Cloud Computing

A collaborative system that includes mobile devices (MDs), edge nodes (ENs), and the cloud is needed where ENs at the network edge can run offloaded tasks of MDs with limited resources and energy for timely processing for latency-sensitive applications. Unlike existing studies, we formulate a total cost minimization problem for the system for applications, which can be divided into several interdependent subtasks. Each subtask can be executed in MDs, ENs, and the cloud. This work formulates a mixed-integer nonlinear program to minimize the total system cost. To address it, a novel meta-heuristic optimization algorithm called Genetic Simulated-annealing-based Particle swarm optimization with Auto-Encoder (GSPAE) is proposed, which innovatively combines feature extraction of deep learning and global search of meta-heuristic optimization. Genetic operations provide diverse solutions, the Metropolis acceptance of annealing offers a robust global search, and autoencoders (AEs) extract distribution characteristics of particles toward high-quality regions for fast convergence. Thus, GSPAE optimizes the associations between ENs and MDs and the scheduling of subtasks among MDs, ENs, and the cloud. Experiments with large-scale Google cluster datasets show that compared to state-of-the-art benchmark methods, GSPAE reduces the total cost by at least 17% while strictly meeting limits of application latency, available energy, computing, and communication resources of ENs and MDs. © 2014 IEEE.

Measuring biases in AI-generated co-authorship networks

Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly advanced prompt-based information retrieval, yet their potential to reproduce or amplify social biases remains insufficiently understood. In this study, we investigate this issue through the concrete task of reconstructing real-world co-authorship networks of computer science (CS) researchers using two widely used LLMs—GPT-3.5 Turbo and Mixtral 8x7B. This task offers a structured and quantifiable way to evaluate whether LLM-generated scholarly relationships reflect demographic disparities, as co-authorship is a key proxy for collaboration and recognition in academia. We compare the LLM-generated networks to baseline networks derived from DBLP and Google Scholar, employing both statistical and network science approaches to assess biases related to gender and ethnicity. Our findings show that both LLMs tend to produce more accurate co-authorship links for individuals with Asian or White names, particularly among researchers with lower visibility or limited academic impact. While we find no significant gender disparities in accuracy, the models systematically favor generating co-authorship links that overrepresent Asian and White individuals. Additionally, the structural properties of the LLM-generated networks differ from those of the baseline networks. These results highlight the importance of examining how LLMs represent social and scientific relationships, particularly in contexts where they are increasingly used for knowledge discovery and scholarly search.

DASL: An Index for Enhancing Tail Latency, Microarchitecture Friendliness, and Restructuring Overhead

The skip list is a popular in-memory index in modern database systems. It maintains multiple levels of lists, which makes it efficient in traversing sorted data. In addition, it is flexible in inserting and deleting data, while avoiding the restructuring overhead of tree-based structures. However, there are considerable challenges in the conventional skip list design. First, the linked list structure has a drawback in utilizing microarchitecture features such as cache, pipeline, and SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) capability. Second, the skip list randomly selects the level of a new node. That is, the skip list runs based on probability rather than data distribution, which can lead to suboptimal lookup performance. Unlike balanced tree structures, the worst-case lookup performance of a skip list remains O(n). This paper proposes a new data structure called DASL (Deterministic Arrayed Skip List). It follows the algorithm of the skip list, but seamlessly integrates the array and devises a new deterministic raise operation in order to obtain flexibility, microarchitecture-friendliness, and reduced tail latency. In specific, a node in DASL consists of an array structure with multiple elements instead of a single element, taking advantage of the array into a list structure. Additionally, the raise operation is conducted deterministically instead of probabilistically, allowing data to be more balanced in multiple lists. Furthermore, we devise two optimization techniques, utilization-based adaptive intra-node search and uneven split operation. Experimental results with various synthetic and real-world workloads demonstrate that DASL outperforms other state-of-the-art in-memory indexes, including skip list, B+tree, and ART. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper studies the efficiency of training a statistical model among an edge server and multiple clients via Federated Learning (FL) - a machine learning method that preserves data privacy in the training process - over wireless networks. Due to unreliable wireless channels and constrained communication resources, the server can only choose a handful of clients for parameter updates during each communication round. To address this issue, analytical expressions are derived to characterize the FL convergence rate, accounting for key features from both communication and algorithmic aspects, including transmission reliability, scheduling policies, and momentum method. First, the analysis reveals that either delicately designed user scheduling policies or expanding higher bandwidth to accommodate more clients in each communication round can expedite model training in networks with reliable connections. However, these methods become ineffective when the connection is erratic. Second, it has been verified that incorporating the momentum method into the model training algorithm accelerates the rate of convergence and provides greater resilience against transmission failures. Last, extensive empirical simulations are provided to verify these theoretical discoveries and enhancements in performance. © 2023 CCBY.

An independent industrial system may transform into a connected network through the assistance of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The deployed sensors in the IIoT maintain surveillance of the industrial machinery and equipment. As a result, safety and reliability emerge as the primary concerns in IIoT. This presents a variety of well-known and increasing issues related to the industrial system. The IIoT devices are exposed to a wide range of malware, threats, and assaults. To prevent the IIoT devices from malware effects, effective protection plans must be implemented. But adequate security mechanisms are not be incorporated in IIoT devices with limited resources. It is essential to ensure the accuracy and dependability of information gathered by IIoT devices. Decisions taken with incomplete or inaccurate data might be devastating. To overcome these difficulties deep learning with reinforcement learning for complex decision-making in industry applications is developed in this research work. In this developed model, an Adaptive Deep Reinforcement learning (ADRL)-based resource management is performed to reduce the operation cost associated with IIoT deployments. Energy efficiency is essential in IIoT ecosystem, particularly for the devices that run on batteries. Through dynamic resource allocation based on workload needs and energy limits, ADRL-based resource management optimizes the usage of energy. The reliability of the designed model is enhanced by fine-tuning the parameters from DRL using the Ship Rescue Optimization (SRO) algorithm. Thus, ADRL-based resource management systems make real-time decisions based on current environmental conditions and system requirements. This helps the IIoT systems to react quickly to change demands and optimize resource allocation.
