Glass based planar lightwave circuit (PLC) is one of the core components employed in optical transceiver operation. Assembly of PLC onto a silicon optical bench (SiOB) is a crucial step, since it requires actively aligning the PLC to both a laser diode and an optical fiber. We have successfully developed an adhesive bonding process for buried type planar glass wave-guide circuit assembly in optical transceiver packaging with the powerful design optimal experiment tool. A dosage of 280j/cm2 with intensity of 15000rnw/cm2 UV curing followed by 15 minutes 110°C thermal cure process is able to achieve 0.2dB optical coupling power loss for PLC-fiber assembly. © 2006 IEEE.

In this work, the mobility degradation after gate AC stress in the off region are examined. It is discovered that the mobility increases after AC gate stress condition 0 V to +15 V, which the previously reported model (by Uraoka, Y) may not explain. Considering the spatial distribution of the voltage and the flow of the carriers in the channel, we proposed the "slicing model" , that is, replace the original TFT by ten TFTs with shorter channel length. Then, by applying the circuit simulator, the voltage distribution in the channel under different stages of gate applied voltage may be obtained. An index considering the current flow and the channel voltage at the edge nodes are proposed to describe the degradation in mobility. The fair linearity between the proposed index and the degradation in mobility reveals the validity of the proposed model.

Using a novel electrostatic self-assembly (ESA) method to incorporate CdSe quantum dots into polymer we have successfully synthesized ultrathin films. This method allows the molecular-level thickness control and layer-by-layer formation of multilayer thin and thick films using alternative anionic and cationic molecular solution dipping. From ellipsometric measurements, we obtained that the thickness of per bilayer is around 3.7 nm. UV-vis absorption spectra versus the number of bilayers have also been obtained using an Hitachi 2001 spectrometer. The size of CdSe quantum dots has been measured using transmission electron microscopy before the CdSe quantum dots are incorporated and confirmed using atomic force microscopy after the formation of the film, respectively. Both measurements indicate that the diameter of the CdSe quantum dots is 2-3 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates that the concentration of the CdSe quantum dots in the film is 2.14%. © 2002 Materials Research Society.

Liquid crystals (LC) have many applications in optics. Many electro-optical devices, like LC spatial light modulators (SLMs), take advantage of electrically controllable birefringence in LCs. LC SLMs are amazingly flexible devices for controlling the phase and amplitude of light. Consequently, LC SLMs are being used for such techniques as wavefront sensing, emulating atmospheric turbulence, wavefront correction, beam steering, and holography. These techniques are often used in aerospace applications like laser weapons, free-space optical communications, satellite tracking, and satellite imagery. This paper highlights the use of LC SLMs for wavefront correction in a laser communication system and shows simulation results

This paper describes a novel system for measuring the frequency response of electrooptic intensity modulators at millimeter-wave frequencies. The system measures |S21| in decibels electrical. In it, the electrical input signal to the modulator is generated by heterodyning two tunable lasers. The output of the modulator is then down-converted to a microwave frequency at which the output is easily measured. Measurements have been made up to 78 GHz using a 55-GHz photodiode as the mixer for the two lasers. In addition, our system tracks any frequency variations in the outputs of the lasers. Our system can also measure the linear response of the modulator if it is operated in nonlinear regions since it can reject higher order harmonics, due to nonlinearities, generated in the modulator © 2006 IEEE.

The liquid-crystal spatial light modulators (SLMs), are proving to be an important tool for research aimed at emulation of atmospheric turbulence. Emulating turbulence is necessary for testing the performance of adaptive-optics system in a controlled environment. SLMs have the ability to compensate for hundreds of waves of aberration through the use of modulo 2π operation. Thus, a device with only slightly more than one wave of phase stroke can emulate large phase of strokes. Optical modulation is not directly dependent on the back-plane used, but instead on the liquid-crystal and the liquid-crystal layer thickness, the same backplane can be used for many application. This modular design makes SLMs versatile across a wide range of technologies such as optical correlators, beamsteerers, optical trapping, and many more.

In this work we present a novel approach for optimizing H.264/AVC video compression by dynamically allocating computational complexity (such as a number of CPU clocks) and bits for encoding each coding element (basic unit) within a video sequence, according to its predicted MAD (mean absolute difference). Our approach is based on a computational complexity-rate-distortion (C-R-D) analysis, which adds a complexity dimension to the conventional rate-distortion (R-D) analysis. Both theoretically and experimentally, we prove that by implementing the proposed approach better results are achieved. In addition, we present a method and system for implementing the proposed approach, and for controlling computational complexity and bit allocation in real-time and off-line video coding. For allocating a corresponding group of coding modes and the quantization step-size, we develop computational complexity - complexity step - rate (C-I-R) and rate - quantization step-size - computational complexity (R-Q-C) models.
