Approximate analytical expressions are derived for the mean gain and the excess noise factor of avalanche photodiodes including the effect of dead space. The analysis is based on undertaking a characteristic-equation approach to obtain an approximate analytical solution to the existing system of recurrence equations which characterize the statistics of the random multiplication gain. The analytical expressions for the excess noise factor and the mean gain are shown to be in good agreement with the exact results obtained from numerical solutions of the recurrence equations for values of the dead space reaching up to 20% of the width of the multiplication region.

Remote sensing imagery acquired at various spatial and radiometric resolutions is used to estimate certain geophysical parameters, gauge the extent of geophysical phenomena, or detect the presence of specific targets. The information content in an image is related to several variables including resolution (both spatial and radiometric), the spatial scale of features to be recognized, the mean radiometric intensity and intensity distribution of various target types, as well as the image statistical characteristics. Textural measures appropriate for specific applications are analyzed in terms of resolution tradeoffs in order to yield the required information content.

In spectrum-sliced WDM systems the carrier signals for the individual channels are obtained by filtering a wideband noise source. Because of the inherent fluctuations of the noise-like source the channel bandwidth, must be large compared to the bit rate. Such systems are then susceptible to dispersion, and one expects an optimum value to balance signal fluctuation and dispersion effects. The purpose of this paper is to describe and present the results of an idealized analytical model for this problem, with results expressed in terms of normalized parameters. We consider the case of a broadband noise source that is spectrally sliced by a rectangular filter.

A joint-Fourier-transform (JFT) correlation technique wherein the reference image is synthesized from the point-spread function (PSF) of a preselected filter is investigated. The phase-only filter (POF) and one of its variations are considered to be possible candidates for the synthetic PSF. Filters with optical distortion invariance and higher discrimination can be easily implemented with the use of this technique, resulting in an efficient target recognition system. The sufficient statistic for the likelihood ratio test between pairwise interaction point processes is well-known. However, the evaluation of its performance is a challenging problem. In this paper it is shown that the distribution of the sufficient statistic can be approximated by the distribution of a Poisson-driven shot-noise random variable. This latter distribution can be readily computed using numerical methods.
