Estimation of the distortion parameters in pattern recognition applications is addressed. This paper reports a new technique for the estimation of distortion parameters using correlation techniques with a synthetic joint Fourier transform (JFT) correlator set-up. In particular, the degree of rotational distortion is studied with the synthesis of a composite estimation feature from a set of distorted targets. Simulation results are presented to show better estimation performance.

In 1976 he became a Lecturer in the Department of Electronic Engineering Kitami Institute of Technology where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1977. In 1979 he became an Associate Professor at Hokkaido University where he was promoted to Professor in 1987. He has been engaged in research on optical and wave electronics. In 1987 he received a Best Paper Award. He is the author ofFundamentals of Finite Element Method of Optics and Waves(Morigkata Publ.)Optical Waveguide Analysis(Asakura Publ.)Optical Waveguide Analysis(McGraw-Hill Book Co.) andOptical Waveguide Theory by the Finite Element Method(KTK Scientific Publishing/Kulwer Academic Publishers). He is also co-author of one book and has written chapters in six other books. He is a member of the Institute of Television Engineers of Japan the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan the Japan Society for Simulation Technology the Japan Society for Computational Methods in Engineering and the Japan Society of Applied Magnetics and Mechanics. He is also an IEEE Senior Member. Graduated in 1991 from me Department of Electronic Engineering Hokkaido University where he received his M.S. degree in 1993. He is currently in the doctoral program. He has been engaged in research on quantum wave phenomena and computer-aided design of optical and quantum effect devices.

To evaluate nonreciprocal mode conversion characteristics in a magnetooptic channel waveguide, a finite element analysis based on the scalar wave approximation is formulated for the first time. A simple iterative calculation method is conceived for solution of the nonlinear eigenvalue equations finally obtained in which the two polarizations are coupled. Specifically, the maximum isolation ratio in the mode-conversion-type magnetooptic rib guide was evaluated and the validity of the method is confirmed by comparison with published experimental results.

All-Fiber Image-Rejection Receiver Front-End for Optical Communication Systems Using High-Birefringence and Polarizing Fibers

In this paper, we investigate in detail the conditions necessary for proper image-rejection operation and characterize the performance of a single detector, all-optical image-rejection mixer for use in heterodyne receivers. The principal component of the all-optical image-rejection receiver is a length of high-birefringence fiber. A polarizing fiber is also considered as an alternative to the high-birefringence fiber. The image-rejection performance is based on meeting certain required ideal conditions for polarization states of the desired and image channels. To study this, we examine, using the Stokes parameter approach, the evolution of certain figures of merit with distance in single-mode high-birefringence and polarizing fibers. Due to the nearness of the frequencies of the desired, image, and local oscillator (LO) signals, the mismatches from the ideal conditions are very small compared to the beat lengths. Therefore, there is negligible receiver error rate performance degradation. Our results indicate that this all-optical image-rejection receiver implementation is a robust device that is also highly insensitive to temperature variations. © 1995 Academic Press, Inc.

An optical pattern or character recognition operation may consist of matching either amplitudes, or phases, or both, The amplitude-modulated phase-only filter (AMPOF), in particular, effectively utilizes both amplitude and phase information to obtain a narrower and larger autocorrelation peak. However, as with any continuous-valued filters, the AMPOF function is not readily suitable for real-time pattern recognition operation. Accordingly, the amplitude and phase of the AMPOF are respectively ternarized and binarized to yield an improved performance statistics of the correlator.< >

A pattern identification technique using the wavelet matched filter (WMF) based on the photorefractive (PR) crystal has been proposed. The essential merit of using the WMF is that it offers better signal discrimination than the conventional matched filter (CMF). Since a large number of WMFs can be synthesized in a PR crystal, fingerprint identification was chosen as the application. Simulated and experimental results are provided.

Wavelength multiplexed holograms using a Ce:Fe: doped LiNbO3 crystal with a visible-light tunable diode laser are reported. The advantages of wavelength multiplexed reflection type holograms are discussed. It is shown that the wavelength multiplexed holograms offer a more uniform selectivity over all the construction angles, as compared with the angularly multiplexed crystal holograms.

We determine the quality of single films of various oxides, which are deposited on thermally oxidized silicon wafers by reactive low-voltage ion plating (RLVIP), by measuring their optical waveguide losses. We use a prism coupler for inserting the radiation of a wavelength-selectable He-Ne laser into the waveguide and a CCD camera for imaging the light scattered from the surface of the films. The waveguide losses of the RLVIP films are typically of the order of 1 to 10 dB/cm. Some data obtained for TiO2 layers on thermally grown SiO2 and RLVIP SiO2 seem to confirm the presence of an absorbing boundary layer between RLVIP SiO2 and TiO2 that has been found in SiO2-TiO2 multilayers. The waveguide measurements also reveal unusual index gradients in thick (approximately 10 mum) single layers Of Al2O3 derived from multimode effective index calculations.

Excited species in the plasma present during reactive low-voltage ion plating (RLVIP) of refractory oxide films are studied by using emission spectroscopy. We believe we have found a higher ratio of atomic to molecular oxygen then reported for earlier analyses that employed a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The application of emission spectroscopy to the RLVIP process and self-actinometry are discussed with examples of stable and unstable processes.

A critical problem in current missile guidance systems is that of tracking targets based on visible light or infrared imaging systems. There is a need to test video tracking system algorithms and hardware without the expense of firing a missile. In the past, computer generated video has been used to test video trackers to their absolute limits of performance in various ri' but these tests must be recorded on video tape and analyzed frame by frame to determine the limits of tracker performance. Also, very expensive electromechanical models have been constructed for closed ioop simulation of video tracking scenarios. The problem with these approaches is that they are very expensive to build, they are time consuming to maintain, they are not portable, they require hands-on user interaction to run, and they often do not lead to quantitative conclusions about the tracker's accuracy that can be used to compare the tracker's performance to design criteria. The work described in this paper, fills the need for low-cost, Personal computer (PC) based, portable evaluation of tracking systems. This tracker evaluation system consists of a PC, compatible non-developmental hardware, and software to generate real time video and analyze the tracker results. The testing platform can use either a serial (RS232-C) or parallel interface to communicate with the tracker. The PC software is driven by a powerful easy-to-use script language that can be used to select a set of standard tests or describe a fine-tuned customized test to simulate a specific scenario. After the tracker has been tested, the PC software performs statistical analysis on the tracker results to determine trLcker performance. Closed-loop testing can be used to determine many aspects of tracker performance, such as: Minimum trackable gray scale difference between target and background, Root Mean Square (RMS) tracking position error, tracker processing delay, maximum trackable target velocity, and maximum trackable target
