A data mining framework has been proposed to estimate intracranial pressure (ICP) non-invasively in our previous work. In the corresponding approach, the feature vector extracted from arterial blood pressure (ABP) and flow velocity (FV) is translated to the estimated errors by the mapping function for each entry in the database. In this paper, three different mapping function solutions, linear least squares (LLS), truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) and standard Tikhonov regularization (STR) are systemically tested to compare the possible effects of different solutions on the non-invasive ICP estimation. The conducted comparison demonstrated that the selection of mapping function solution actually influences the estimation. Among the tested three solutions for mapping function, TSVD and STR show better ICP estimation performance with smaller ICP errors than LLS.

Changes of ICP waveform morphology are characterized with different patients' states like hypertension, hydrocephalus and traumatic brain injury etc. Morphological clustering and analysis of ICP pulse (MOCAIP) approach is recently developed to extract ICP morphology feature, in which hierarchical clustering is used to extract the dominated pulse. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of using principle component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA) to extract dominated pulse. The comparative study among clustering, PCA and ICP based approaches shows that PCA approach may be an alternative of clustering approach to extract dominated pulse in a faster fashion when dataset is of large size.

At the outset of this paper, we studied the global competition that makes it necessary to increase the number of well trained engineers and technologists. We then listed the kinds of global learning outcomes that are needed to enhance the education of this workforce, and enumerated ways to teach these skills to students without incurring excessive costs. In addition, we discussed different strategies to increase the overall numbers of globally competent engineers and technologists. It is our belief that more students will choose to study engineering when they are told that engineers with management and leadership skills are highly desirable. For example, students, who would otherwise become business majors due to an inherent need to manage and lead, can now visualize engineering or technology as alternative gateway to their career destinations. The number of technologists can also be enhanced by creating student-centered transfer opportunities of A.A.S. degree holders and Certificate holders. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Our department has entered into articulation agreements with several two-year colleges. Subsequently, we have commenced a dialogue with our community college partners as to how we can be more effective and student-centered in our approach to vertical integration. Traditionally, community colleges have done a good job of preparing technicians for industry, but graduates of two-year technical programs have more difficulty in getting appropriate credit for their technical courses. When transferring to a four-year program a direct equivalency is not always possible due to regulatory requirements, but in an outcome-based culture, it should be possible to create supplementary 1-credit or 0-credit courses that make such transfers possible. This paper will detail our initial efforts in that direction. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

This paper describes the design and development of a large 20 dBi (decibels isotropic) Wi-Fi antenna for a class project in the Communication Circuit Design course. This large antenna is based on smaller Wi-Fi antennas commonly referred to as cantennas (gain of about 10 dBi). The smaller version is made with a single can (3-4 inches) in diameter and an appropriately placed feed probe. Our version consists of several progressively larger cylindrical sections connected together by 34 degree flared sections (3 inches long). The first cylindrical section has a diameter of 4 inches and the last flared section has a diameter of about 36 inches. The overall length of the antenna is about 5 feet long. While the antenna was designed by electronic and computer engineering technology (ECET) students, mechanical engineering technology (MET) students took charge of building it under the supervision of their MET instructor. The structure was built by spot welding laser-cut pieces of sheet metal. ECET students made experimental measurements to verify the predicted gain and functionality. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

This paper discusses phase noise characteristics of an Fr oscillator focusing on a signal output position. Oscillation circuits can be divided into an amplifier and a feedback circuit. We compared that phase noise characteristics before passing through a feedback circuit or a after. As a result, it turned out that the slope of the phase noise characteristic does not relate to the signal output position. © 2008 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

In the future, we need to look more closely at the differences that exist between the two groups in their responses to survey statements 4, 5, and 10. In both cases, less than 80% of students had an agreement level that was two or greater;there remains is a significant variation that needs to be explained. While the same presenters were responsible for the both presentations, a more tightly controlled presentation for the two groups may be a way to reveal discrepancies. We believe it would be helpful to administer a pre-survey prior to the presentation using general statements that touch upon GEE outcomes. The post survey may help clarify the impact of the presentation itself. We have been in the business of promoting diversity for some time now. We are all too aware of the negative reaction some students have: "why do I need to know this?" It is our belief that attitudes about exposure to issues like cultural diversity can be influenced positively by teaching it as an essential component of globalization. We selected two case studies, a familiar scenario, and an unfamiliar one. The US was selected as the familiar place and India was chosen as the unfamiliar location for reasons that include growth patterns and author experience. The survey conducted after the presentation actually supports this idea (Statement 1, table 2). All respondents agreed with the premise that "studying people and cultures are important to the innovation process in a global economy." Further analysis of data reveals the encouraging result that students demonstrate an understanding that they will be working in a global economy (Fig. 1, GEE outcome h). © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

The Information Age has revolutionized the way students learn in the classroom. The United States Military Academy (USMA) emphasizes the importance of Information technology (IT) through an academy-wide IT specific goal. This goal supports the USMA's mission of producing Army Officers who can respond effectively to technological changes in the defense of our nation. Courses augmented with IT can be daunting for cadets who lack the experience and confidence level to succeed in the course. As a result, these types of courses are avoided by cadets if at all possible. This is not an option for an aspiring officer who will lead the soldiers of tomorrow on a digitized battlefield. Since 1990, cadets have been issued a computer which has played a central role in bringing the power of IT to all graduates of the Military Academy. Integration of IT in the curriculum begins early with every cadet receiving a laptop computer. An integrated software package is included to support any course of instruction. Cadets receive two courses in IT, one in their freshman year and one in their junior year. The freshman course teaches the cadet the basic functionality of the laptop, a basic programming language, and creating a basic website. The junior course builds on the freshman course by teaching the cadets to create an advanced website, design and build a network, manage a database, and create an information system. IT plays a central role in several overlap courses between engineering and the humanities in such areas as information warfare, terrorism, and the legal aspects of intellectual property rights. What makes this approach unique is the methodical diffusion of IT into course design which removes the barrier between learning and the implementation of IT as an academic multiplier. An academy-wide committee consisting of 12 members is responsible for examining collected data to see how well the Military Academy is meeting its LT goal. It is important for students getting suitable feedback information when either they are doing or completing a learning activity. This research tries to know what kind of feedback message is really useful to students. For this purpose, this paper develops a workable e-learning environment with feedback mechanism to gather the learning effects of students with different kinds of feedbacks. The experiment involves five fifth-grade classes and divides five classes into three different groups. The students in the control group have no feedback and students in the other two groups have different kinds of feedback messages. The analysis of experiment data contains two parts: the first one evaluates the feedback efficiencies for all groups;and, then all students will be separated into three clusters based on their academic achievement in order to do further analysis.

Mobile Learning makes students get the advantages of both traditional learning and e-learning. How to give students learning sequence suggestions in the mobile learning environment is a big issue and is also the goal of this paper. This research uses knowledge map to store the characteristics of each learning object and designs a situated map to represent spatial knowledge in the mobile learning environment. By using these two knowledge structures, knowledge map and situated map, the system created by this research can generate various navigation sentences and ask students to observe the characteristics of learning objects. This research also takes information theory into consideration in order to decide which navigation sentence should deliver to the student first. The system calculates the entropy for each generated sentence and finds the most appropriate one to deliver to the student. At the end of this paper, an experiment system is implemented for the 5th year biology course, Plant Observation.
