This research presents the development and evaluation of a breath alcohol measurement device utilizing the MQ-3 alcohol sensor and an Arduino Nano-based control system. The primary objective was to design an accurate and reliable system for detecting breath alcohol concentration, with real-time feedback provided through an OLED display and an active buzzer for alerts. The device operates by measuring the alcohol concentration in the breath and converting the sensor data into parts per million (ppm). When the alcohol concentration exceeds the predefined threshold of 5% ABV, the system activates an audible alarm via the buzzer and displays the corresponding ppm value on the OLED screen. A series of tests were conducted with eight volunteers who consumed varying amounts of alcohol. The results demonstrated the system's high accuracy and responsiveness, with the ability to detect alcohol concentrations ranging from safe levels to dangerous thresholds. The device was tested multiple times to ensure consistency and minimize errors, with the final results confirming its effectiveness in providing reliable alcohol measurements. This system holds significant potential for applications in monitoring alcohol levels in drivers and individuals involved in safety-critical activities. The research underscores the importance of real-time alcohol detection systems in enhancing public safety and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are stimulus-responsive materials with intrinsic anisotropy. However, it is still challenging to in situ program the mesogen alignment to realize three-dimensional (3D) deformations with high-resolution patterned structures. This work presents a feasible strategy to program the anisotropy of LCEs by using chalcone mesogens that can undergo a photoinduced cycloaddition reaction under linear polarized light. It is shown that by controlling the polarization director and the irradiation region, patterned alignment distribution in a freestanding LCE film can be created, which leads to complex and reversible 3D shape-morphing behaviors. The work demonstrates an in situ light-writing method to achieve sophisticated topography changes in LCEs, which has potential applications in encryption, sensors, and beyond.

The emerging space-air-ground integrated network has attracted intensive research and necessitates reliable and efficient aeronautical communications. This paper investigates terahertz Ultra-Massive (UM)-MIMO-based aeronautical communications and proposes an effective channel estimation and tracking scheme, which can solve the performance degradation problem caused by the unique triple delay-beam-Doppler squint effects of aeronautical terahertz UM-MIMO channels. Specifically, based on the rough angle estimates acquired from navigation information, an initial aeronautical link is established, where the delay-beam squint at transceiver can be significantly mitigated by employing a Grouping True-Time Delay Unit (GTTDU) module (e.g., the designed Rotman lens-based GTTDU module). According to the proposed prior-aided iterative angle estimation algorithm, azimuth/elevation angles can be estimated, and these angles are adopted to achieve precise beam-alignment and refine GTTDU module for further eliminating delay-beam squint. Doppler shifts can be subsequently estimated using the proposed prior-aided iterative Doppler shift estimation algorithm. On this basis, path delays and channel gains can be estimated accurately, where the Doppler squint can be effectively attenuated via compensation process. For data transmission, a data-aided decision-directed based channel tracking algorithm is developed to track the beam-aligned effective channels. When the data-aided channel tracking is invalid, angles will be re-estimated at the pilot-aided channel tracking stage with an equivalent sparse digital array, where angle ambiguity can be resolved based on the previously estimated angles. Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.

This paper presents the project “Matrix System for the Management of Resources Allocation of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Felicio Rocho Hospital Hospital”, which was developed in order to attend the demands of the hospital medical team. The scope of this work goes beyond the humanitarian aspects of health care. It also covers some managing aspects of the clinical setting by means of controlling the allocation of human and material resources. The project consists on the development of a monitoring system that registrates the flow of physicians and staff throughout the ICU. This system is integrated to the medical records of the clinical procedures performed on patients in the ICU. The main technological basis used in the system is infrared (IR), a simple technology and low cost, attached to the health care professionals' nametags, which enables the tracking of their presence in the ICU. The data collected on the nametags is transmitted to software (open source) that works as a communication feed to a model of management *** system provides important information regarding hospital management, such as the use of medical resources and the hospitalization period of patients, at the same time that is attached to the patient's medical record. As a result, this database would allow for an improvement in the provided services' quality once it generates useful information for a more effective hospital management. Furthermore, this paper also highlights important issues regarding the implementation of technological projects in health and emergency *** work emphasize the results of the inclusion of ethics, moral, environmental and humanistic principles in the education of engineers at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais - PUC Minas.

Floor plan construction via anonymous Wi-Fi signal fragment matching

Floor plan construction is the basis for fingerprint-based localization and people's activity learning, especially in the environments where the geometrical map is not available or does not exist. To this end, we propose a new received signal strength (RSS) fragment matching approach to identify the location points (LPs) in floor plan as the overlapped pieces between the fragments. Then, by means of the Smith-Waterman alignment, each LP can be recognized as a winning path in scoring space. Finally, we use the Allen's interval algebra to assemble the time-stamped LPs into a floor plan in target area. The experiments with the actual Wi-Fi RSS measurements recorded in HKUST campus demonstrate that our proposed approach performs better than the conventional K-means clustering and spectral clustering in floor plan construction. © 2014 ICIC International.

Path tracking in wireless and mobile environments is a fundamental technology for ubiquitous location-based services (LBSs). In particular, it is very challenging to develop highly accurate and cost-efficient tracking systems applied to the anonymous areas where the floor plans are not available for security and privacy reasons. This paper proposes a novel path tracking approach for large Wi-Fi areas based on the time-stamped unlabeled mobility map which is constructed from Smith-Waterman received signal strength (RSS) measurement matching. Instead of conventional location fingerprinting, we construct mobility map with the technique of dimension reduction from the raw measurement space into a low-dimensional embedded manifold. The feasibility of our proposed approach is verified by the real-world experiments in the HKUST campus Wi-Fi networks, sMobileNet. The experimental results prove that our approach is adaptive and capable of achieving an adequate precision level in path tracking. © 2014 Mu Zhou et al.

This paper addresses the integrability aspects of solitons in optical metamaterials. There are two types of integration tools that are applied. Topological as well as singular optical solitons are retrieved. An additional set of solutions naturally fall out of these integration schemes that depends on the parameter regimes. These are American singular periodic Scientific solutions. Publishers The constraint conditions for the existence of these solutions are also given. Finally, a numerical simulation for the topological soliton solution is included. © 2015 American Scientific Publishers.
