Recently, microneedle patches have been explored for extracting interstitial fluid with the goal of extracting temporally relevant, clinical-grade information for human health monitoring. As compared to traditional hypodermic needles, the sub-millimeter scale of microneedles allows for the creation of micropores providing access into human skin interstitial fluid while minimizing interactions with blood vessels and nerves, leading to painless insertion with little to no bleeding. An essential sub-component is the actuator, responsible for driving the microneedle into the skin with a precise force and velocity to ensure reliable insertion. Reliability, in this case, consists of two criteria: the ability of the microneedle to 1) penetrate the skin, and 2) withstand penetration forces without mechanical failure. Evaluation of these criteria requires a thorough understanding of the non-linear, time-dependent interactions between the microneedle and the skin during insertion, including rupture and tearing of the skin on the micron scale, and the resultant stresses on the microneedle. To this end, a comprehensive finite-element model was developed to simulate the microneedle insertion process. This analysis yielded a prediction of complete microneedle insertion without failure of the microneedle and an estimated insertion force of 0.055 N per microneedle, well within the capability of the actuator system considered. This insertion force was validated using experimental data obtained through microneedle insertion in whole skin samples. The model was then used to perform several parametric studies, yielding valuable insights for possible future design improvements.

This paper deals with the problem of sampled-data gain-scheduling control design for affine quasi-LPV systems. As the control implementation is based on sample-data and its update occurs only at specific sampling instants, the state-dependent scheduling functions of the controller are piecewise continuous. This characteristic causes a mismatch between the system model and the controller parameters, namely asynchronous scheduling functions of the controller with respect to the plant during the inter-sampling behavior. To cope with this phenomenon, a polytopic description of the inter-sampling is constructed based on bounding assumptions on the scheduling functions and their time derivatives. Then, regarding a time-delay approach, a constructive and numerically implementable LMI-based synthesis condition is derived, and a convex procedure is proposed for enlarging the estimate of the region of attraction of the origin of the closed-loop system. The time-derivative bounds of the scheduling functions are explicitly accounted into the local analysis to ensure the method’s implementation. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the proposed methodology.

The growing complexity of analog circuits poses challenging constraints on analog simulation tools. Simulation based optimization approaches have gained a lot of interest to cut down the analog circuit design time and complexity. One of these approaches is the Bayesian optimization (BO) approach, which represents the analog circuit as a black box function, and incorporates optimization goal and constraints aiming to reach the optimum design parameters with the least possible simulation iterations. In this paper, a BO approach for automated sizing of analog circuits is discussed. The proposed approach uses Gaussian Process (GP) as a surrogate model and utilizes SOBOL sampling. The proposed algorithm is validated on a two-stage op amp benchmark circuit and compared to the literature work. © 2020 IEEE.

In the area of material science and technology, fabrication and characterization of nano-materials play an important role since it leads to the development of devices with interesting performance and potential applications in electronics, magnetics, optics, and photonics. Among the materials perovskite materials are gaining prominence. In this investigation, thin films of bismuth ferrite have been prepared and the impact of co–substitution of barium on their structural, morphological and optical properties have been studied. The spray pyrolysis procedure was used to prepare the thin films of bismuth ferrite with medium thickness by doping barium with concentrations of 1%, 3%, 5% and 10%. Various characterization techniques were employed to study the films. The presence of barium, bismuth and iron in the samples was confirmed by EDAX spectra. X-Ray diffraction studies confirmed the polycrystalline nature of the films having a rhombohedrally distorted pervoskite crystal structure fitting to space group R3c. The Scherrer rule was applied to obtain the crystallite size which was found to be small. Surface morphology studies carried out using field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed that the grain size and roughness of the films are modified with increase in doping concentration. The measurement results of optical absorption showed an increase in optical band gap with doping with barium. The results of structural, morphological and optical parameters with the increasing doping concentration indicate that these films are promising candidate for applications in opto-electronics, photovoltaics and gas sensors.

Palladium is the most prominent material in both scientific and industrial research on gas storage,purification,detection,and catalysis due to its unique properties as a catalyst and hydrogen *** the dynamic optical phenomena of palladium reacting with hydrogen,transduction of the gas-matter reaction into light-matter interaction is attempted to visualize the dynamic surface chemistry and reaction *** simple geometry of the metal-dielectric-metal structure,Fabry-Perot etalon,is employed for a colorimetric reactor,to display the catalytic reaction of the exposed gas via water-film/bubble formation at the dielectric/palladium *** adsorption/desorption behavior and catalytic reaction of hydrogen and oxygen on the palladium surface display highly repeatable and dramatic color changes based on two distinct water formation trends:the foggy effect by water bubbles and the whiteout effect by water film *** and experiments demonstrate the robustness of the proposed Fabry-Perot etalon as an excellent platform for monitoring the opto-physical phenomena driven by heterogeneous catalysis.

Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging (FLAIR) is a magnetic resonance (MR) method that is frequently utilized to diagnose brain lesions. However, it usually provides transverse section imaging in high resolution but with very low resolution in the other axis. This non-isotropy huddles its wide utilization in research including machine learning. In this study, we applied a deep-learning based super resolution (SR) technique to convert non-isotropic FLAIR images into isotropic one. We proposed a multi-input 3D ResUnet that uses both FLAIR and T1-weighted MR images as its inputs. As a result, our proposed model successfully reconstructed isotropic FLAIR images (SSIM: 0.9947 $\pm 0.0009)$ , and out-performed the FLAIR only single-input 3D ResUnet.

Electrophoresis is the motion of particles relative to a surrounding fluid driven by a uniform electric field. In conventional electrophoresis, the electrophoretic velocity grows linearly with the applied field. Nonlinear effects with a quadratic speed vs field dependence are gaining research interest since an alternating current field could drive them. Here, we report on the giant nonlinearity of electrophoresis in a nematic liquid crystal in which the speed grows with the fourth and sixth powers of the electric field. The mechanism is attributed to the shear thinning of the nematic environment induced by the moving colloid. The observed giant nonlinear effect dramatically enhances the efficiency of electrophoretic transport.
