To enhance the sense of reality in the VR environment, it is essential to incorporate not only visual and hearing but also tactile feedback. Previous studies related to tactile sensation have only focused on object classification to identify the object in contact with the tactile sensor. When people encounter a new object, they can use tactile perception information, such as roughness, to understand the object's attributes and functions. Therefore, for tactile research to be applicable in real-life scenarios, tactile perception classification is essential not only for classifying an object but also for recognizing its attributes and functions. This study aims to investigate the possibility of predicting roughness, one of the important human tactile perceptions, using deep learning models. We created 63 tactile samples, measured the vibration data of each sample using an acceleration sensor, and investigated how humans perceive the roughness of the tactile samples with five different levels. Object classification was performed using five deep learning models, among which the Shallow ConvNet achieved the highest performance, confirming its suitability as the most appropriate model for analyzing vibration data. Using the Shallow ConvNet, we attained a high accuracy of 98.6 ±5.6% for the identification of five levels of roughness, demonstrating that different levels of tactile perception information can be discriminated with high performance. © 2024 IEEE.

Beginning in the Fall of 2008, the electronics and Telecommunications engineering technology faculty have been moving their two independent programs to a single program focused on electronic product and system development in order to respond to changing industry need. Through a process that involved internal evaluation as well as external industry involvement, the new curriculum has now been designed, vetted, and improved. Pending University approval, the new curriculum will be put in place starting in the Fall of 2012. The new curriculum not only better suits the need of today's industry customers, it also provides a unique and exciting selling proposition for recruiting. Prospective students are responding well to the new emphasis which is not unexpected. It is clear that when many high school students think of electronics technology, they see themselves working with hands-on technology and understanding/designing real electronics products rather than focusing only on low-level mathematics and theory. Thus, the new focus resonates well with what they envision their future career paths to be. After the initial roll-out of the curriculum, continuous improvement processes will be put into place to ensure that the new curriculum continues to evolve. In addition, the faculty will be working continuously with industry to ensure that the new technical electives remain current and relevant. Finally, as the curriculum is implemented additional publications will be generated to disseminate details of the new courses and feedback from students and industry. © 2012 American Society for engineering Education.

This paper proposes a performance analysis of using a static volt-amp-reactive (VAR) compensator for a three-phase self-excited induction generator (SEIG) operating as a single-phase induction generator. The study proposes appropriate capacitor for building up voltage supplying power to load with static VAR for regulating terminal voltage. The simulation model is analyzed by using MATLAB/Simulink under various conditions such as reactive power supplied, dynamic response, steady state, building up voltage for startup, linear load, non-linear load and harmonics in system. From the study (based on the study, the findings revealed it is found) that using the static VAR compensator connected in parallel with loads for supplying reactive power to the load systems is needed for maintaining terminal voltage. © 2023 IEEE.

This study aimed to identify electroencephalography (EEG)-based neurophysiological biomarkers for monitoring mental fatigue during motor imagery (MI) tasks. We used EEG data recorded from 29 healthy adults during MI tasks. For the preprocessing of the EEG data, we sequentially performed down-sampling into 200 Hz, independent component analysis (ICA), band-pass filtering between 0.5 and 50 Hz, and common average reference (CAR). The preprocessed EEG data were analyzed using a fast Fourier transform (FFT) to calculate spectral power in the δ (0.5–3 Hz), θ (4–7 Hz), α (8–13 Hz), and β (13–30 Hz) frequency bands. Subsequently, seventeen fatigue-related metrics were calculated using individual spectral powers and their combinations. These fatigue-related metrics were averaged for the frontal lobe (F3 and F4), central lobe (FCC3h and FCC4h), parietal lobe (P3 and P4), and occipital lobe (POO1 and POO2). The statistical significance of the average fatigue metrics was evaluated through Pearson correlation analysis with the sequence of trials. Biometrics based on electromyogram (EMG) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) signals has received significant attention due to its resistance to forgery and tampering, as well as its relatively higher convenience and security compared to other biometric modalities. However, most EMG and IMU signal-based authentication methods require explicit authentication using unnatural gestures, which is not userfriendly. To address this, we collected EMG and IMU data during virtual reality (VR) rhythm game play, which does not require explicit gestures, and performed implicit authentication. Using a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier, we achieved classification accuracies of 91.71% for human identification and 87.91% for human authentication. The result demonstrated the feasibility of a seamless and implicit authentication in VR environments. © 2024 IEEE.

Pupillometry measures pupil size, and several open-source algorithms are available to analyse pupillometry data. However, only a few studies compared these algorithms’ accuracy and computational resources. This study aims to compare the accuracy of computer vision-based algorithms (Swirski, Starburst, PuRe, ElSe, ExCuSe algorithms) and the machine learning algorithm, DeepLabCut, to the double-blinded human examiners (gold-standard). Training of DeepLabCut with different architectures and a variable number of markers (2-9 markers) was done on an open-source dataset. The duration of training was statistically longer for the ResNet152 model compared to the MobileNet model. The pupil diameters in computer vision-based software such as PuRe, Starburst, and Swirski were statistically different from human measurements. MobileNet 2 and 3 marker models were the closest to the human measurements. In conclusion, this work highlights the efficiency of lower marker models based on MobileNet architecture in DeepLabCut, which consumes fewer computational resources and is more accurate. © 2024 Institute of Information technology, Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a life-threatening condition that demands immediate intervention. The key to survival often lies in the timely and precise analysis of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals to determine the necessity of a shock from an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). In this paper, we address the critical need for improved accuracy in AED decision-making by presenting a novel approach that leverages the Hilbert Transform to calculate the slope of ECG signals by harnessing the analytical power of Hilbert Transformed ECG signals. By scrutinizing the heart's electrical activity through this method, we aim to enhance the AED's ability to differentiate between cases of ventricular fibrillation and other non-shockable rhythms, ultimately leading to more efficient and effective treatment. Our research explores two distinct approaches for signal analysis and correlates their findings to achieve higher precision in defibrillation decisions. To validate the effectiveness of our approach, we employ a diverse and publicly available dataset containing various heart conditions, allowing us to demonstrate the robustness of our method across a wide spectrum of cases. This study represents a significant advancement in the field of automatic external defibrillation, with the potential to save countless lives through more accurate and timely interventions. © 2023 IEEE.

The Republic of the Philippines is confronted with rebuilding its energy landscape, which now depends heavily on imported fossil fuels for a substantial supply. The Department of Energy (DOE) has established lofty objectives to enhance the nation's renewable energy (RE) capability;nevertheless, these objectives are still to be achieved. This research supports DOE's goals by studying other possible renewable energy sources. In particular, the primary aim of this research is to examine the viability of Offshore Wind Converters (OWCs) and Wave Energy Converters (WECs) as viable sustainable energy options for the Philippines. Ocean wave converters (OWCs) provide inherent benefits in terms of dependability and have widespread societal acceptance. Conversely, wave energy converters (WECs) harness the vast energy potential contained within ocean waves. A comparative evaluation was undertaken to analyze the differences between these two potential renewable energy sources. The assessment concludes that OWCs possess a minor advantage over WECs regarding their economic viability and higher societal acceptability. It recommended that the government adopts a diversified energy portfolio, which may include the incorporation of WECs to effectively navigate the changing dynamics of the energy sector, enhance sustainability, and ensure the long-term security of the nation's energy supply. © 2023 IEEE.

There are a variety of symptoms of autism spectrum disorders. The appropriate interventions are selected according to the symptoms. Moreover, the key to successful intervention is to provide suitable therapy continuously. Unfortunately, the number of autism specialists is insufficient for the growing demands. Thus, for better intervention outcomes, the collaboration of parents/caregivers who help continue the intervention at home is crucial to the success of the intervention. However, it is not easy for inexperienced parents/caregivers. This study aimed to help parents/caregivers by using a robot to assist personalized learning for children with autism. We developed an artificial intelligence-based program to choose actions appropriate to the child user's learning style or preference so that the child user stays attended to the activities the robot offers. In this pilot study, we tested using a robot to assist personalized learning with six participants in the special education needs school. The result of this study revealed the possibility of using a robot to assist in personalized learning for children with autism, from the perspective of the participants' teacher. While interacting with the robot, the participants achieved a high average accuracy percentage of 83.36% and demonstrated a positive learning trend. © 2023 IEEE.

Compact mode order converters (MOCs) operating at the mid-infrared regime are reported using silicon-on-calcium fluoride platform. The suggested designs convert the fundamental transverse electric (TE) mode to first and second order TE modes with total device lengths of only 5.89 μm and 5 μm, respectively, at λ = 3.14 µm. The full vectorial 3D finite-deference time-domain is utilized to analyze the TE0 → TE1 and TE0→TE2 MOCs. The proposed designs depend on using dielectric material of Si3N4 inside the Si core region to improve and facilitate the mode conversion process. The conversion efficiencies (inter-modal crosstalks [CTs]) are equal to 93.4% (− 19.2 dB), and 90% (− 17 dB) for TE0: TE1 and TE0:TE2 MOCs, respectively. Moreover, the reported designs have a wide wavelength range of 300 nm, where the conversion-efficiency (CE) and maximum CT are > 86% and 0: TE1 and TE0: TE2 MOCs, respectively, at λ = 1.55 µm. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
