Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), Multi-criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), and Cluster Analysis (CA) are techniques widely used to help decision-makers determine the solution to problems with multiple and often conflicting criteria. This study presents a comprehensive review of the literature on the DEA, MCDA, and CA models to identify existing and potential applications and future development trends. To this end, the Methodi Ordinatio was applied to determine which publications have the greatest impact, considering articles in three databases: Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. We pair the techniques two by two since no results were found to integrate the three techniques. The results point to a portfolio with 490 articles, in which approximately 43.87% of the articles combine DEA and MCDA techniques for solving efficiency and productivity analysis problems. © 2023 The Author(s)

Refereeing in sports is about fairness. The referee's job is to balance what the player with the ball thinks is fair with what the player trying to take the ball thinks is fair. Referees are judges on those two opposite opinions. Football (soccer) has massive global appeal and fan interest. Some football championships now use Video Assistant Referees (VAR) to help the referees make correct decisions. This study reviews the literature on VAR in football using the Methodi Ordinatio. Methodi Ordinatio is a methodology used to select and rank relevant scientific papers combining the impact factor, number of citations, and year of publication. We present a case study about the distance the VAR officials cover in the main Brazilian football championship (Brazilian Serie A). This study adopts the p-medians method to analyse the impact of opening VAR operation rooms in the distance covered by the professionals travelling to officiate matches. The locations of VAR operation rooms were obtained, and applying these locations in the first ten rounds of the Brazilian Serie A season 2021 would possibly reduce about 70% of the distance covered by the VAR officials travelling compared to the total distance performed. © 2023 The Author(s)

Regioisomeric effects regulating the physicochemical properties of complex copolymers in thin films

We demonstrate that minimal alterations to the chemical structure of a hydroxystyrene (HOST)-containing terpolymer lead to significant changes in its physicochemical properties, which in turn govern photolithographic pattern formation in chemical amplification mechanism. While the structures of the three repeating units, their compositions, and the molecular weight characteristics of the terpolymers were controlled to be similar, the location of the phenolic OH groups was adjusted by copolymerizing o -, m -, and p -acetoxystyrene, subsequently transformed into o -, m -, and p -HOST through deacetylation. In the studies to examine the physicochemical properties of the copolymers, the copolymer with p -HOST showed dissolution rate in n -butyl acetate ( n BA) of ≈ 15 nm/s, which was lower than that of copolymer with m -HOST (≈ 18 nm/s) and o -HOST (≈ 27 nm/s), further showing high linear correlation with the Hansen space distance between the copolymers and n BA. Moreover, the acid diffusions in the thin film, which plays a significant role in acid-catalyzed deprotection of the copolymers to solubility modulation, was affected by the location of the phenolic OH: the fastest and slowest acid diffusions were observed in the copolymers of p -HOST and o -HOST, respectively. The regioisomerism further affects the photolithographic performance collectively: (i) in contrast curve, light energy required to change the solubility was in order of p -HOST < m -HOST < o -HOST, and (ii) the height of the formed pattern was in order of p -HOST > m -HOST > o -HOST, highlighting the significance of chemical structure design and the fundamental understanding of structure–property relationships.

International airports play a significant role in a country's economic development. We propose an integrated framework for operational efficiency analysis using Data Envelopment Analysis, Windows Analysis, and Malmquist Index to identify inefficiencies and areas of improvement in the air transportation industry. This study analyzed 23 Brazilian international airports from 2010 to 2021, using the DEA Window Analysis (DEAWA) combined with the Index (MI). The airports were grouped geographically in southern Brazil. The integration of these methods brought an important insight to the evaluation processes, even for those previously analyzed using DEA. The analyses found that COVID-19 potently influenced the drop in the efficiency index. No airport was fully efficient over the analyzed periods. Private airports achieved an efficiency index slightly higher than public ones, but the difference of the efficiency index by public–private management type is not clear. This type of analysis provides a strategic and comparative tool, making it possible to understand better the weaknesses of the air transportation system. © 2024 The Author(s)

Scalable smartphone cluster for deep learning

Various deep learning applications on smartphones have been rapidly rising, but training deep neural networks (DNNs) has too large computational burden to be executed on a single smartphone. A portable cluster, which connects smartphones with a wireless network and supports parallel computation using them, can be a potential approach to resolve the issue. However, by our findings, the limitations of wireless communication restrict the cluster size to up to 30 smartphones. Such small-scale clusters have insufficient computational power to train DNNs from scratch. In this paper, we propose a scalable smartphone cluster enabling deep learning training by removing the portability to increase its computational efficiency. The cluster connects 138 Galaxy S10+ devices with a wired network using Ethernet. We implemented large-batch synchronous training of DNNs based on Caffe, a deep learning library. The smartphone cluster yielded 90% of the speed of a P100 when training ResNet-50, and approximately 43x speed-up of a V100 when training MobileNet-v1. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Billions of photos are uploaded to the web daily through various types of social networks. Some of these images receive millions of views and become popular, whereas others remain completely unnoticed. This raises the problem of predicting image popularity on social media. The popularity of an image can be affected by several factors, such as visual content, aesthetic quality, user, post metadata, and time. Thus, considering all these factors is essential for accurately predicting image popularity. In addition, the efficiency of the predictive model also plays a crucial role. In this study, motivated by multimodal learning, which uses information from various modalities, and the current success of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in various fields, we propose a deep learning model, called visual-social convolutional neural network (VSCNN), which predicts the popularity of a posted image by incorporating various types of visual and social features into a unified network model. VSCNN first learns to extract high-level representations from the input visual and social features by utilizing two individual CNNs. The outputs of these two networks are then fused into a joint network to estimate the popularity score in the output layer. We assess the performance of the proposed method by conducting extensive experiments on a dataset of approximately 432K images posted on Flickr. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed VSCNN model significantly outperforms state-of-the-art models, with a relative improvement of greater than 2.33%, 7.59%, and 14.16% in terms of Spearman’s Rho, mean absolute error, and mean squared error, respectively. Grounded by students' lack of conceptual understanding in identifying and comprehending basic concepts of computer network, this quasi-experimental study aims to identify the effect of applying blended learning model toward the improvement of students' conceptual understanding. It was designed using non-equivalent control group design in which the experimental group and the control group were differently treated using, respectively, blended learning and conventional learning model. There were 58 students selected as the sample of the research;30 students in experimental class and 28 students in control class. Essay test was chosen to collect the data of the conceptual understanding of the students in both groups. Using MANOVA, the data analysis revealed the significant effect of applying blended learning model toward students' conceptual understanding with P = 0.000 © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Large cities situated within the developing countries facing one of the most important problems are heavy traffic congestion. It happened because of fast urbanization n. Many modern infrastructures for constructing a traffic signal have been introduced. Due to high maintenance cost and less knowledge of local workers that infrastructure doesn't work well. In this paper, we proposed a new technique for signal control framework, which estimates the traffic flows using the image analysis. For this technique inexpensive Web cameras are required for supporting signal control strategy which is based on traffic volume on that particular time. Traffic volumes can be estimated with few observation points. Based on that, signal controls can be adjusted. Numerical experiments of this proposed work confirmed that average travel time is reduced to 20.6% while comparing to the fixed-time signal control. © 2019 IEEE.

Defects in wide-band-gap semiconductors are promising qubit candidates for quantum communication and computation. Epitaxially grown II-VI semiconductors are particularly promising host materials due to their direct band gap and potential for isotopic purification to a spin-zero nuclear background. Here, we show an alternative type of single photon emitter with potential electron spin qubits based on Cl impurities in ZnSe. We utilize a quantum well to increase the binding energies of donor emission and confirm single photon emission with short radiative lifetimes of 192 ps. Furthermore, we verify that the ground state of the Cl donor complex contains a single electron by observing two-electron-satellite emission, leaving the electron in higher orbital states. We also characterize the Zeeman splitting of the exciton transition by performing polarization-resolved magnetic spectroscopy on single emitters. Our results suggest single Cl impurities are suitable as a single photon source with a potential photonic interface.

This paper discusses the details of the curricular development effort with the focus on the vertical and horizontal integration of laboratory curricula and course projects within the electronics engineering technology (EET) program at Texas A&M University. Both software and hardware aspects are addressed. A common set of software tools are introduced to the sophomore students in the EET curriculum;these are then used in several junior and senior level courses. Through early and repeated exposure to these tools, students learn to use them more effectively to solve various engineering problems in laboratory and course projects. A DC permanent magnetic motor is identified as one of the common hardware platforms for multiple course projects. By using a common platform for different course projects, the students can spend much less time preparing for the course projects. With each course adding different features to the common platform, the learning experience in several courses becomes seamlessly integrated. The curriculum development effort improves the efficiency of student learning and enhances the students' educational experience. © 2011 American Society for engineering Education.
