Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were coated first with methylene blue (MB) by noncovalent adsorption and then by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and glucose oxidase (GOD) by covalent-linking. The MB-MWNTs/GOD/HRP composites formed stable films on screen-printed electrodes (SPE). The electrochemical and electrocatalytic behaviors of the bienzyme modified SPE were studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and amperometry. Using the MB-MWNT/GOD/HRP composites, glucose could be calibrated by amperometry at -0.35 V vs. SCE. The optimized response (at pH 7.0) had a sensitivity of 2.4 mA.M-1 and a limit of detection (3xS/N) of 35 mu M. Tests of the portable bienzyme sensor demonstrate its imperviousness to the effects of ascorbic acid, uric acid and p-acetaminophen, as well as its ability to measure glucose concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 2 mM.

In this paper, relationship between the IIP3 of the doubly-terminated ladder low-pass Gm-C filter and the IIP3 of the transconductors employed in the filter is derived. It was found that the IIP3 of the Gm-C filter IIP3 is about 1.2 dBV higher than the IIP3 of the transconductors. Simulation results are found to be in excellent agreement with the analytical results.

Spectrum sensing is considered as the first and main step for cognitive radio systems to achieve an efficient use of spectrum. Cooperation and clustering among cognitive radio users are two techniques that can be employed with spectrum sensing in order to improve the sensing performance by reducing miss-detection and false alarm. In this paper, within the framework of a clustering-based cooperative spectrum sensing scheme, we study the effect of errors in transmitting the local decisions from the secondary users to the cluster heads (or the fusion center), while considering non-identical channel conditions between the secondary users. Closed-form expressions for the global probabilities of detection and false alarm at the cluster head are derived.

Wrapping of a two element LCP based patch antenna array is studied in this work. For the first time, the designed array is bent in both E and H planes to observe the effect on the radiation and impedance performance of the antenna. The 38 GHz simulation results reveal better performance for H plane bending as compared to E plane bending. A 100 um thick substrate is used for the design which is best suited for flexible antenna applications. Gain variations of 1.1 dB and 1.4 dB are observed for the two orientations while a significantly increased impedance bandwidth of 3 % is obtained with H plane wrapping. The design is highly suitable for broadband micro-cellular backhaul applications.

This paper describes an experiment of integrating three courses at the Brazilian Aeronautics Institute of technology, within the Electronic and Computer engineering Graduate program on the 1st semester of 2011. A smart grids system was used as a Problem Based Learning (PBL) strategy together with an agile method and best practices within a project developed on three courses: CE-240 Database Systems Project, CE-245 Information Technologies, and CE-229 Software Testing. Students of these courses had to interact, in order to produce a prototype of a smart grids system, simulating a real project development. At the end, a survey among students has proved that the integration of practical exercises has provided higher levels of understanding and problem solving capabilities, improving students' knowledge. The survey also has shown that communication between students from different courses should be improved. The major findings of this paper were that the integration of the three courses was favorable by 83% of the surveyed students, and most students (73%) have considered that their knowledge was improved. Authors recommend the use of practical exercises, courses integration, and PBL to considerably increase the quality of electronic and computer engineering courses.
