Hyperspectral imaging has been widely studied in many applications; notably in climate changes, vegetation, and desert studies. However, such kind of imaging brings a huge amount of data, which requires transmission, processing, and storage resources for both airborne and space borne imaging. Compression of hyperspectral data cubes is an effective solution for these problems. Lossless compression of the hyperspectral data usually results in low compression ratio, which may not meet the available resources; on the other hand, lossy compression may give the desired ratio, but with a significant degradation effect on object identification performance of the hyperspectral data. Moreover, most hyperspectral data compression techniques exploits the similarities in spectral dimensions; which requires bands reordering or regrouping, to make use of the spectral redundancy. In this paper, we analyze the spectral cross correlation between bands for AVIRIS and Hyperion hyperspectral data; spectral cross correlation matrix is calculated, assessing the strength of the spectral matrix, and finally, we propose new technique to find highly correlated groups of bands in the hyperspectral data cube based on “inter band correlation square” referencing.

Dynamic behavior of nonlinear surface acoustic waves (NLSAWs) generated on a piezoelectric single crystal has been much interested in application to new engineering fields from a viewpoint of the complex system. In this study, characteristics of fundamental and second-order harmonic components in NLSAWs propagating on a LiNbO₃ single crystal were investigated, and we proposed a novel photonic signal control device using the NLSAW. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Power density is the important design criterion in wind turbine converter design provided that satisfactory converter performance is guaranteed. In order to assess a converter in terms of power density, which is dependent on converter electrical and thermal behaviors, converter electro-thermal models are required to be derived, implemented, and utilized. In this study, employed as a grid-side medium voltage full-scale voltage source converters (VSCs) in a multi-MW wind turbine, press-pack IGBT three-level neutral-point-clamped VSC (3L-NPC-VSC), 3L active NPC-VSC (3L-ANPC-VSC), and 3L neutral-point-piloted VSC (3L-NPP-VSC) are characterized in terms of converter operating principles, physical structure, power loss, and DC bus capacitor size for establishing the basis for converter electro-thermal modeling. Via the practical implementations of the converter electro-thermal models in a computation platform (e.g. MATLAB), these VSCs are investigated with respect to power capability and DC bus capacitor size. Based on these investigations, the VSCs' power densities are quantified and compared. It is shown that the converter power density can be improved by 13% for 3L-ANPC-VSC and by 22% for 3L-NPP-VSC compared to 3L-NPC-VSC under the given conditions for this study.

Optical tweezers are used for manipulation of micron-sized dielectric beads and cells. Some biological cells are vulnerable to photo damage if subjected to laser-based direct manipulation. In such cases, precise manipulation of these cells can be accomplished by using gripper formations made up of silica beads, which are actuated by optical tweezers. Manual indirect manipulation of cells using grippers made of optically trapped beads is a time consuming process or sometimes just impossible. This paper presents an approach for automated micromanipulation using gripper formations and heuristic based path planning for collision-free transport of biological cells. The objective of the developed planner is to transport target cells to their respective goal positions in the minimum time. we evaluated the performance of different gripper formations in terms of gripper stability, speed of transport, and required laser power using experiments.

Optical Tweezers (OT) are used for highly accurate manipulations of biological cells. However, the direct exposure of cells to focused laser beam may negatively influence their biological functions. In order to overcome this problem, we generate multiple optical traps to grab and move a 3D ensemble of inert particles such as silica microspheres to act as a reconfigurable gripper for a manipulated cell. The relative positions of the microspheres are important in order for the gripper to be robust against external environmental forces and the exposure of high intensity laser on the cell to be minimized. In this paper, we present results of different gripper configurations, experimentally tested using our OT setup, that provide robust gripping as well as minimize laser intensity experienced by the cell. We developed a computational approach that allowed us to perform preliminary modeling and synthesis of the gripper configurations. The gripper synthesis is cast as a multi-objective optimization problem.

Organic Thin Film Transistors (OTFTs) are promising devices for future development of variety of low-cost and large-area electronics applications such as flexible displays. This paper analyzes the performance of OTFT made of several organic semiconducting and insulating materials and further discusses their applications. Analysis of previous research work demonstrates that the mobility in OTFT decreases when the product of semiconducting film thickness and gate capacitance per unit area increases. The decrease is specified by a power law function with parameters for several organic semiconductors. OTFT characteristics have undergone spectacular improvements during the last few years. This paper explores the effect of variation of channel length from 40 nm to 20 nm on drain current for pentacene bottom contact structure. Variations in these quantities maps to variations in the electrical behaviour of devices. It has been found that drain current increases due to decrease in length of organic thin film conducting channel. It reviews recent progress in parameter properties for device designs and applications related to OTFTs. The performance of OTFTs is evaluated in terms of mobility, on/off current ratio, threshold voltage and sub threshold slope. This paper thoroughly discusses the overall performance and applications of OTFTs in various fields. © 2011 IEEE.

A microfluidic lab-on-a-chip Coulter counter was demonstrated to count micro particles and leukocytes from whole blood. Instead of electroplated or deposited metal electrodes, off-the-shelf gold pins were used as electrodes to simplify fabrication process, reduce cost, enhance device durability, and above all, achieve superior uniformity in E-field distribution for improved signal quality. A custom-designed, low-cost demodulation circuit was developed to detect the AC impedance signals of the particles and cells passing the detection area defined by the microfluidic channels. A mixture of polystyrene beads with three different sizes was used to characterize the device. The results showed high throughput at 2000 particles/s and clear separation among different sizes of beads with coefficients of variation (CV) of 13.53%, 10.35% and 5.67% for 7.66μm, 10.5μm and 14.7μmbeads, respectively. To demonstrate the potential for a point-of-care or self-administered device for cancer patients going through chemotherapy, we have used the lab-on-a-chip device to count leukocytes from whole blood, generating encouraging preliminary results comparable to the results from a commercial flow cytometer.

A current-mode four-phase quadrature oscillator using 2 current controlled current conveyor transconductance amplifiers (CCCCTAs) and 2 grounded capacitors is presented. The proposed oscillator can provide 4 sinusoidal output currents with 90° phase difference. The oscillation condition and oscillation frequency can be electronically/independently controlled by adjusting the bias current of the CCCCTA. High output impedances of the configuration enable the circuit to be cascaded without additional current buffers. The use of only grounded capacitors is ideal for integration. The PSpice simulation results are depicted. The given results agree well with the theoretical anticipation. © 2011 IEEE.
