Enhancing the efficiency of lung cancer screening: predictive models utilizing deep learning from CT scans

Lung cancer is the most lethal form of cancer. This paper introduces a novel framework to discern and classify pulmonary disorders such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and lung cancer by analyzing conventional X-ray and CT scan images called lung cancer risk prediction (LCRP) model. LCRP has four modules, namely data collection and preprocessing, data augmentation module, image segmentation module, and prediction module. Actually, LCRP employs three deep learning models;sequential model, functional model, and transfer model on publicly available training datasets. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have emerged as a highly effective field in machine learning, particularly for image datasets in the field of biomedical applications. The primary goal is to validate these models by comparing their performance with other models in order to determine their effectiveness in addressing challenging datasets. Our research has revealed a noteworthy enhancement in the efficiency of binary and multi-class classification using mask R-CNN image segmentation. During the model training process, a combination of Adam and stochastic gradient descent dual optimizers has been used to improve performance. LCRP have outperformed current pre-trained models by minimizing training parameters, computational costs, and overhead. It introduces 98.5% accuracy, 88.7% specificity, 89% sensitivity, 89.2% precision, and 89.09% F-measure. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Optimized Convolutional Neural Network at the IoT edge for image detection using pruning and quantization

Most real-time computer vision applications heavily rely on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based models, for image classification and recognition. Due to the computationally and memory-intensive nature of the CNN model, it’s challenging to deploy on resource-constrained Internet of Things (IoT) devices to enable Edge intelligence for real-time decision-making. Edge intelligence requires minimum inference latency, memory footprint, and energy-efficient model. This work aims to develop an energy-efficient deep learning accelerator using a 3-stage pipeline: Training, Weight-pruning, and Quantization to reduce the model size and optimize the resources. First, we employ YOLOv3, a CNN architecture to detect objects in an image on the trained data. In addition, a sparse network of YOLO has been created by using pruning, which helps to improve the network’s performance and efficiency by reducing the computational requirements. Finally, we utilize 8-bit quantization to reduce the precision of the weights and activations, in a neural network. The evaluation of our proposed model shows that combining pruning and 8-bit quantization improves the efficiency and performance of the model. While pruning shows a decline of 80.39% in model parameters. The combination of 8-bit quantization results in an improvement in inference latency by 22.72% compared to existing SQuantization approach and a reduction of energy consumption by 29.41%. © The Author(s) 2024.

Through an extensive review of existing literature and empirical studies, this research synthesizes the multifaceted landscape of blockchain, elucidating key concepts such as consensus mechanisms, smart contracts, scalability, interoperability, and privacy protocols. By examining the evolution of blockchain from its inception to its current state and beyond, this paper delineates the trajectory of technological advancements and identifies emerging paradigms. Furthermore, it critically evaluates the strengths and limitations of diverse blockchain architectures and models, offering insights into their applicability across different domains and use cases. Finally, this study culminates in the proposal of a comprehensive framework that encapsulates the essential elements necessary for understanding, implementing, and harnessing the transformative potential of blockchain technologies. Visual Feature Learning (VFL) is a critical area of research in computer vision that involves the automatic extraction of features and patterns from images and videos. The applications of VFL are vast, including object detection and recognition, facial recognition, scene understanding, medical image analysis, and autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we propose to conduct extensive systematic literature review (SLR) on VFL based on deep learning algorithms. The paper conducted an SLR covering deep learning algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Autoencoders, and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) including their variants. The review highlights the importance of VFL in computer vision and the limitations of traditional feature extraction techniques. Furthermore, it provides an in-depth analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of various deep learning algorithms for solving problems in VFL. The discussion of the applications of VFL provides an insight into the impact of VFL on various industries and domains. The review also analyzed the challenges faced by VFL, such as data scarcity and quality, overfitting, generalization, interpretability, and explainability. The discussion of future directions for VFL includes hybrid techniques, unsupervised feature learning, continual learning, attention-based models, and explainable AI. These techniques aim to address the challenges faced by VFL and improve the performance of the models. The systematic literature review concludes that VFL is a rapidly evolving field with the potential to transform many industries and domains. The review highlights the need for further research in VFL and emphasizes the importance of responsible use of VFL models in various applications. Reinforcement learning (RL)-based brain machine interfaces (BMIs) provide a promising solution for paralyzed people. Enhancing the decoding performance of RL-based BMIs relies on the design of effective reward signals. Inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) offers an approach to infer subjects' own evaluation from the observed behavior. However, applying IRL to extract reward information in complex BMI tasks requires consideration of the dynamics of subjects' goal during the control process. This dynamic nature of subjects' evaluation requires the IRL method to be able to estimate a time varying reward function. Previous IRL methods applied in BMI systems only estimated a static reward function. Existing IRL algorithms for dynamic reward estimation employ optimization methods to approximate the reward map for each state at each time, which demands substantial amounts of data to achieve convergence. In this paper, we propose a dynamic IRL method to estimate the feedback-driven reward of subjects during BMI tasks. We utilize a state-observation model to continuously infer the reward value for each state, with sensory feedback serving as the external input to model the transition process of the reward. We evaluate our proposed method on a simulated BMI fetch task, which is a multistep task with a time varying reward function. Our method demonstrates improved reward estimation close to the ground truth value, and it significantly outperforms the existing dynamic IRL method when the map size exceeds 25(p © 2024 IEEE.

Tsunami tide prediction in shallow water using recurrent neural networks: model implementation in the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System

Near-field tides prediction for tsunami detection in the coastal area is a significant problem of the cable-based tsunami meter system in north Sipora, Indonesia. The problem is caused by its shallow water condition and the unavailability of an applicable model or research for tsunami detection in this area. The problem foundation of shallow water area is its ambient noise level-dependent property that requires preprocessing to improve its feature representation. Moreover, because this shallow water is close to the land area, we must consider a model that can accommodate low prediction time for a Tsunami Early Warning System. Therefore, we propose a recurrent neural network (RNN) model because of its reliable performance for time series forecasting. Our report evaluates variants of the RNN model (the vanilla RNN, LSTM and GRU models) in tides prediction and z-score analysis for tsunami identification. The GRU model overwhelms the other two variants in error scores and time processed (training and prediction). It can achieve median error score distribution of 7.8×10-5 on the L1000-P250 configuration with time prediction under 0.1 s. This lower-time prediction is necessary to ensure the early warning system is going well. Moreover, the GRU model can identify all synthetic tsunami tide spikes (compared with the ground truth result) from magnitude 7.2–8.2 by applying a z-score on the GRU’s prediction. © The Author(s) 2023.

The phenomenon of distraction is very common, and its adverse effects are seen among people. The major cause underlying this issue is the ease with which adversarial web sites and web pages can be accessed. It is of utmost importance to locate, evaluate, and actively block such web pages in an effort to comprehensively and globally solve this societal issue. Thus, the given paper proposes an extension or plug-in to detect, analyze, and block websites smartly. The proposed approach takes keywords entered by the user as input into consideration, which eventually leads to the generation of web pages and web links. The filtering of web links is done by the proposed extension, followed by the extraction of features, the utilization of support vector machines (SVM) for binary classification, and the summarization of textual data using natural language processing (NLP). Lastly, the precise results corresponding to relevant web links are presented to the users, which will increase their productivity, thereby reducing their distraction levels under all working circumstances. The performance of the proposed approach is validated against existing recent studies based on evaluation metrics such as adversarial website detection time (ms) and accuracy (%). © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2024.

Privacy-preserving cross-domain recommendation using hybrid federated transfer learning

Cross-domain recommender systems, which serve as a panacea to data sparsity and cold-start problems, are increasingly vital for providing personalized content across diverse application domains like medicine, e-commerce, etc. This is accomplished by leveraging adequate ratings ad user profiles in one domain to ensure precise recommendations in another domain. However, the domains with good ratings are unwilling to share user ratings with third-party recommender systems/domains due to privacy-concern. It demands the need for privacy mechanism to transfer knowledge between domains securely. So, this research introduces the CrossRec-Hybrid Federated Transfer Learning (CrossRec-HFTL) framework to address cold start and privacy problems in a cross-domain recommendation system, which combines adversarial domain adaptation and federated learning to leverage user and item interactions from a labeled source domain to generate recommendations in an unlabeled target domain. CrossRec-HFTL uses a model architecture called CrossRec-CDAN, which consists of multiple generators and discriminators for domain adaptation. The generators produce user, item, and interaction embeddings, while the discriminators distinguish between source and target domain samples. Federated learning enables collaborative model training across multiple clients while maintaining data locality, further bolstered by encryption techniques for privacy preservation. The framework was evaluated on the Amazon dataset across three domain pairs: Home and kitchen to Office Products (HK → OP), CDs and vinyl to Digital Music (CDs → DM) and Digital Music to Music Instruments (DM → MI). The simulation findings reveal that CrossRec-HFTL outperforms baseline and modern recommendation models in terms of recommendation accuracy, achieving a very less RMSE of 0.82 and MAE of 0.58. A 28.8-mW Accelerator IC for Dark Channel Prior-Based Blind Image Deblurring

This work presents an accelerator that performs blind deblurring based on the dark channel prior. The alternating minimization algorithm is leveraged for latent image and blur kernel estimation. A 2-D Laplace equation solver is embedded to reduce the latency by 56% for boundary wrapping. For latent image estimation, gradient data locality is employed to reduce the latency by 57%. A sorting engine is designed to reduce the latency in data access by 96% for calculating the dark channel. A pipelined mixed-radix 1-D fast Fourier transform (FFT) engine is used for efficient latent image estimation and blur kernel estimation. By employing image size approximation, 85% of additions and 97% of multiplications for FFT can further be saved. In the blur kernel estimator, a 2-D convolution engine with a parallel architecture is implemented, reducing the latency by 79%. The accelerator supports blur kernels of 25times 25 and 49times 49 pixels for blurred images of 129times 129 and 257times 257 pixels, respectively. Fabricated in 40-nm CMOS, the accelerator's core area is 3.98 mm2. The chip dissipates 28.8 mW at 65 MHz from a 0.65-V supply. It can estimate a blur kernel of 25times 25 pixels for an image patch with 129times 129 pixels for deblurring a full-HD image in 1.7 s, achieving a 2562times shorter latency than a high-end CPU. Compared with the state-of-the-art design, the chip achieves a four times higher normalized area efficiency and a 7.5times higher normalized energy efficiency. © 1966-2012 IEEE.

Real-world images often encompass embedded texts that adhere to disparate disciplines like business, education, and amusement, to name a few. Such images are graphically rich in terms of font attributes, color distribution, foreground-background similarity, and component organization. This aggravates the difficulty of recognizing texts from these images. Such characteristics are very prominent in the case of movie posters. One of the first pieces of information on movie posters is the title. Automatic recognition of movie titles from images can aid in efficient indexing as well as information conveyance. However, it is accompanied by other texts like the names of actors, producers, taglines, dates, etc. Though the organization of components is somewhat similar across different film industries like Tollywood (West Bengal), Bollywood (Mumbai), and Hollywood (Los Angeles), the graffiti patterns differ in multifarious instances. To address the problem of movie title understanding, we propose a dataset named MOvie POsters-Hollywood Bollywood Tollywood (MOPO-HBT) that encompasses movie posters from the aforementioned industries. The entire dataset is publicly available (http://***/11564) for research purposes. The baseline results of title identification and recognition were obtained with a CNN-based (Convolutional Neural Network) approach, wherein the titles were extracted using the M-EAST (Modified-Efficient and Accurate Scene Text) detector model. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2023.
