Future network should be able to efficiently serve packet-based networks, such as the Internet. In this paper, based on results from COST 266, we explore characteristics of optical burst switching (OBS) and optical packet switching (OPS). Both node design and metropolitan area network (MAN) are discussed. A unique joint comparative performance evaluation of contention resolution in OBS and OPS are presented, as well as methods of quality of service (QoS) differentiation in OBS/OPS networks, and their performance.

The hybrid search algorithm, a combination of the maximum-likelihood search and serial search algorithms, is one of the most promising techniques that can be used for code acquisition in CDMA forward links. The hybrid search code acquisition system considered in this paper employs two operating modes, i.e., search and verification modes with M-parallel correlators used for maximum-likelihood detection in search mode. An analytical expression for the mean acquisition time is first obtained. The probabilities of detection, miss, and false alarm are also derived for both search and verification modes for frequency-selective Rayleigh fading environments with assumption that the fading envelope of the received signal is constant over the interval of post-detection integration (PDI). Numerical evaluation shall be performed to investigate the effects of sub-window size, number of post-detection integration in search and verification modes, and so on, in the forward link of cellular CDMA networks. © 2002 IEEE.

In any measuring system the categorization of the error generation factors leads to simplification of complex error problems and to higher suppression of the error. In this paper we categorize, quantify and analyze the errors that affect a binocular active vision head. Simulations have been made and experimental results on a high resolution pan-tilt-vergence mechanism are also proposed. As a conclusion it can be said that the system performs optimal when it is initialized so that the two cameras are perfectly aligned and perpendicular to the baseline. Small variations in the vergence angle or small horizontal deviations of the principal point alters the measurement dramatically. On the other hand, variations in pan and tilt and vertical deviations of the principal point, affect the measurement insignificantly. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

We evaluate the performance of a W-CDMA reverse link receiver system with closed loop fast transmit power control (TPC). For fast power control, signal-to-interference power ratio (SIR) must be measured precisely. We propose a new SIR measurement algorithm having a simple structure. The proposed algorithm uses unused orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) code for interference power evaluation. The proposed SIR measurement algorithm is compared to the conventional SIR measurement algorithm (see Higuchi, K. et al., IEEE. J. Sel. Areas Commun., vol.18, no,8, p.1526-35, 2000; Seo, S. et al., IEICE Trans. Commun., vol.E81-B, no.7, p.1508-16, 1998; Andoh, H. et al., IEICE Trans. Commun., vol.E81-B, no.7, p.1517-26, 1998) under closed loop fast TPC. We adopted a weighted multi-slot averaging (WMSA) channel estimation filter with K=2 for mobile radio channel estimation and considered one slot TPC delay. Extensive computer simulation results show that the proposed algorithm using unused OVSF code reduces the required E/sub b//I/sub 0/ at the BER of 10/sup -3/ up to 0.9 dB and has an improved TPC error performance compared to the conventional algorithm.

The gradient descent backpropagation learning algorithm is based on minimizing the mean square error. An alternate approach to gradient descent is the exponentiated gradient descent algorithm which minimizes the relative entropy. Exponentiated gradient descent applied to backpropagation is proposed for a multilayer feedforward neural network. The learning rules for changing weights in the output layer as well the hidden layer neurons in the network are developed. Simulations were performed to explore the convergence and learning of the backpropagation algorithm with exponentiated gradient descent. Accuracy obtained with exponentiated gradient descent back propagation was comparable to the gradient descent back propagation while convergence was faster. The results show that exponentiated gradient descent can be extended to a multilayer feedforward neural network and used in pattern classification applications.

This paper presents a novel adaptive beamforming algorithm for a smart antenna base station system (SA BTS). The new technique is based on the eigen-space method for computing the optimal weight vector which does not degrade the receiving performance even in wide angle-spread circumstances. By exploiting the diversity gain, which is available in the signal environments of the wide angle-spread, the proposed method rather enhances the performance as the angular spread of the desired signal increases nearly up to /spl plusmn/20/spl deg/-30/spl deg/ from the center of arrival angle. The proposed technique is applied to the IS2000 1X signal environment to show its excellent performance compared to a typical beamforming method which considerably degrades the receiving performance of the SA BTS as the angular spread of the desired signal increases.

In this paper, a genetic algorithm-based adaptive image enhancement filtering scheme is proposed and implemented on an FPGA board. In contrast to conventional filter systems, the proposed system can find an optimal combination of filters, as well as their sequent order and parameter values, adaptively under unknown noise types using structured genetic algorithms. For evaluation, three types of noise were used, and the experimental results showed that the proposed scheme can generate an optimal set of filters adaptively without a-priori noise information.
