The paper presents a family of novel light blob shape descriptors for use in selected active safety algorithms used in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). One of the motivations was to obtain a descriptor that would ensure low computational complexity. This makes it easy to implement both in software and hardware. One assumption is that the location of the center of a given light spot is approximately known. The principle of its operation is then to count white pixels in selected directions, starting from this central point. A key issue here is an efficient way of determining indexes of particular pixels belonging to the image patch, as well as the location of points representing places where the white area turns into black. In the case of a hardware implementation, this can be done using a parallel circuit operating in asynchronous mode, without the need for a control clock. © 2023 IEEE.

Construction management is a standardized means of project management. The construction project takes a long time and has many links, and the construction workers involved are complicated. Poor quality buildings will not only affect the construction enterprises’ brand, but also threaten the safety of people's lives and property. In this paper, an optimization model of housing construction project scheduling based on ant colony algorithm (ACA) is put forward. By studying the relationship among various sub-projects in the construction system of building projects, the management of building projects can be better realized. The results show that compared with the other two algorithms, the optimized ACA has certain advantages in recall and accuracy. There are many contents involved in the building construction process, and there are many uncontrollable factors in the building process, which greatly impact the project's construction quality. The construction industry can use this technology to strengthen the building construction management, solve the problems existing in the construction management, and improve the construction quality. © 2023 IEEE.

The age and stroke-associated decline in musculoskeletal strength degrades the ability to perform daily human tasks using the upper ***,we introduce an intelligent upper-limb exoskeleton system that utilizes deep learning to predict human intention for strength *** embedded soft wearable sensors provide sensory feedback by collecting real-time muscle activities,which are simultaneously computed to determine the user’s intended *** deep learning predicts four upper-limb joint motions with an average accuracy of 96.2%at a 500–550 ms response rate,suggesting that the exoskeleton operates just by human *** addition,an array of soft pneumatics assists the intended movements by providing 897 newtons of force while generating a displacement of 87mm at *** intent-driven exoskeleton can reduce human muscle activities by 3.7 times on average compared to the unassisted exoskeleton.

In this paper, the problem of backward compatibility of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) is investigated. The goal is to contextualize ADRC to deliver its interpretations from the established field of linear control systems. For this study, a control algorithm, denoted here as integral disturbance rejection control (IDRC), is considered that combines classical state-feedback control with an integral compensator. At first, an interpretation of ADRC is involved in terms of existing state-space control approaches. Next, a transition to the frequency domain is performed, which is justified as a significant part of practical control engineering is conducted in that domain. For assumed specific plant structures, both ADRC and IDRC are then holistically compared in terms of transfer function representation and frequency characteristics, as well as steady-state convergence conditions. Such a juxtaposition helps to highlight the similarities and differences of both approaches, whereas the utilized bandwidth parameterization is shown to bring the control system to the same form, thus indicating some interesting practical aspects. Finally, the theoretical results concerning both considered control structures are validated in a set of numerical simulations and experiments conducted on a laboratory hardware testbed. © 2025 The Author(s).

Foot ulcers are one of the chronic wounds commonly occurring in diabetic patients and are associated with a high risk of major or minor amputations. Evaluation and measurement of such wounds are done manually by experts to assess the wound healing and suggest further treatment. Manual assessment methods can cause infections at times and are less feasible in the existence of pandemic situations. The development of artificial intelligence has brought a revolution in many domains of medical imaging. Deep learning-based computer-aided approaches can be applied to assist clinicians in assessing and monitoring chronic wounds. Wound segmentation helps to measure wound area which is useful for assessing its healing progress. In this research work, a deep learning-based segmentation method, namely Dual-UNet is presented for precisely segmenting the diabetic foot ulcers images. The foot ulcer images are passed to Dual-UNet to generate the mask image having the segmented wound area. We proposed two modified UNets each having a customized encoder and decoder with skip connections, atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) block, and output block to improve the segmentation results. We assessed our framework by performing experimentation on two benchmark datasets, named the foot ulcer segmentation (FUSeg) challenge and the AZH segmentation dataset. Additionally, we have also assessed our Dual-UNet for cross-corpora validation to demonstrate the generalization capability of the proposed approach. The qualitative and quantitative results highlight the accuracy and effectiveness of the Dual-UN et framework for segmenting chronic diabetic wounds. Future research should focus on the development of large and diverse wound datasets and improving the results for cross-corpora evaluation.

This paper proposes a multi-scale control scheme aimed at controlling speed, dwell time, and charging time of electric and automated buses performing the transport service on lines where there are no reserved lanes. The proposed control scheme has two layers characterized by different control objectives, level of detail and time scales. The high-level controller periodically solves a multi-objective optimal control problem formalized to ensure an adequate transport service, while the low-level controller, being based on a more accurate description of the bus dynamics and energy consumption, seeks to follow the high-level control actions while taking into account the effective traffic conditions encountered on the line and the effective dynamic behaviour of the bus. The paper concludes with the application to a case study in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

The Circular Economy Action Plan is the main building block of the European Green Deal, Europe's new agenda for sustainable growth. Businesses need new technologies, new methods and new industrial organization either to create new businesses or to transform their products, processes and business models. They also need new talents to innovate, create businesses and new jobs, and transform society into a more sustainable one. Circular economy has grown significantly in recent years as a topic taught in engineering curricula. The purpose of this paper is to present the design, implementation and evaluation of a summer school program dedicated to the development, transformation and implementation of circular economy systems and new business models in manufacturing. The program was designed in collaboration with three university partners during a European project and relied on contributions from industrial companies, including start-ups and innovative companies. At the end, some lessons are drawn in order to show the main added value based on the evaluation of this summer school and to identify recommendations for the design and implementation of similar summer schools. © 2024 The Author(s).

Tactile sensor developments have been seen in the past years. The flexible and soft type of these sensors became popular due to their capability to ensure safe physical interactions with humans. This paper presents a flexible force-sensitive sealed packet that can detect normal force acting on its surface. Our sensor used poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) or PEDOT:PSS and liquid binder to form a conductive liquid mixture and put it inside the sealed packet of thin plastic. One notable difference between our proposed sensor and other PEDOT:PSS-based sensors is that ours is low-cost and easy to fabricate. For our data acquisition setup, we used a voltage divider circuit with a 68k ohm resistor connected to an analog pin of an Arduino Uno. We also used the DAYSENSOR’s DYZ-101 5-kg load cell to determine the amount of force applied, which served as our ground truth. The changes in resistance were compared against the force applied. Linear regression analysis was done to show the correlation between the two quantities, and its slope corresponds to the sensor’s sensitivity. We performed a repeatability analysis of the proposed sensor, although some challenges were observed since manual pressing was done. We also tested the change in sensitivity once a different material, such as cardboard, foam, and copper tape, is placed between the load cell and our proposed sensor. Our results showed that we can achieve higher sensitivity and better linearity using foam. For future works, we plan to extend this study to skin-like wearable devices and tactile sensing.

CLEAR-Net: A Cascaded Local and External Attention Network for Enhanced Dehazing of Remote Sensing Images

Atmospheric haze degrades remote sensing images by obscuring critical details, diminishing data interpretation accuracy. This paper presents CLEAR-Net: Cascaded Local and External Attention Resource Network, a novel dehazing framework designed to enhance clarity and detail in remote sensing images. CLEAR-Net employs a two-block cascaded architecture to address both global and local haze effects. The first block utilizes an Outer Global Attention (OGA) mechanism, processing global features via a U-Net Inner Attention (UIA) module to mitigate widespread haze. The second block focuses on Outer Local Attention (OLA), refining local image features through reintegration with the UIA module. An ensemble method selects the most effective model weights based on perceptual quality metrics, and a composite loss function emphasizes the preservation of high-frequency details to maintain textural and edge fidelity. CLEAR-Net's efficacy is evaluated on the SateHaze1k and RICE datasets, outperforming existing state-of-theart dehazing techniques. On SateHaze1k, CLEAR-Net achieves an average PSNR of 27.876 dB, surpassing the next best model by approximately 4.81%;under moderate fog, it attains a PSNR of 30.824 dB, about 9.8% higher than existing methods. On the RICE dataset, which includes challenging cloud cover, CLEARNet achieves PSNRs of 36.873 dB on RICE1 and 34.624 dB on RICE2, improving over next-best models by approximately 18.2% and 12%, respectively, and attains the lowest LPIPS values, indicating superior perceptual quality. © 2008-2012 IEEE.

This study aims to compare and improve the performance of four different machine learning algorithms (Naive Bayes, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Decision Trees, and Support Vector Machines (SVM)) in classification problems. The analyses emphasize the impact of data preprocessing steps and hyperparameter optimization on model performance. As part of the data preprocessing, missing values were imputed, categorical data were transformed into numerical data, and normalization procedures were applied. It was observed that normalization significantly enhanced the performance of the MLP and SVM algorithms in particular. Furthermore, additional improvements in accuracy rates were achieved through hyperparameter optimization. Naive Bayes and Decision Trees were found to exhibit stable performance regardless of data scaling. This study demonstrates that proper data preprocessing and model selection can significantly enhance algorithm performance in classification problems.
