In Rwanda, and in Cyangugu Remote community near the Kivu Lake, there is high solar sunshine energy, significant wind energy, abundant methane gas, appreciable geothermal energy, peat(biomass), hydro renewable energy sources, and grid power access. To ensure feasibility, accessibility, and sustainability, a balance need to be maintained to optimize this energy mix options, in terms of cost (NPV, COE etc.), maintenance, sensitivity, optimization, and other system parameters. The best combination of these Hybrid Renewable Energy Sources (HRES) considering the community’s energy needs, is modelled using the Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Electric Renewables – Professional (HOMER Pro), innovatively, to design and find out the proposed optimum system requirements with environmental advantages or benefits, best payback duration, lower or zero net GHGs and radiation emissions, performance optimization with lest value of Net Present Cost (NPC) and Cost of Energy (COE), sensitivity analysis involving components supply changes like wind speed change based atmospheric conditions, variable sunshine frequencies based on time of the day, seasons, fuel price changes etc. These seven energy supply components is used to provide access to modern, clean and reliable energy to Cyangugu. © 2025 The Author(s).

Mobile devices play a key role in developing mental health focused applications for individuals. The presented research proposes using mobile devices to limit the occurrence of depression in disabled individuals. It proposes a novel two stage solution that limits depression in disabled subscribers. The solution is integrated in a headband. Disabled subscribers have been considered because of their limited ability (or inability) to demonstrate motor skills enabling them to avoid trauma triggering scenarios. The research also examines how the proposed mechanism influences an individual’s identity. This is because existing solution utilize an invasive approach while the proposed solution is non-invasive. Analysis shows that the proposed mechanism preserves individual identity by 74.2%–99.3% on average. © The Author(s) 2024.

The increase of fraudsters and fraud attacks on the communication network plays a major role in the loss of revenue, network abuse, and degradation of services. Communication and cloud networks belong to separate companies and consist of handover points from one network to another. The scope is to bring the communication and cloud networks closer and understand network traffic profiles using Software-Defined Networking (SDN) concept. The SDN controller will serve to route the extracted tapped data to a central server instead of making use of the live network. To apply policies to the traffic and identify which user traffic is a fraud case, and further to send a block signal to the network charging element on the communication network. The flow process will be automated, and to protect the network from fraud attacks, using the SDN controller in a seamless approach and maintaining the performance of the network. The article defines the impact of fraud and fraud case detection. At which Smart Grid leverages intelligent communication technologies to modernize the electric infrastructure and raises new vectors for cyber risks and energy frauds. While services on the network require a secure platform that serves to block fraudster. The main purpose is to achieve a higher energy/service fraud detection rate than similar work in the field, to provide a solution that integrates within the traditional network, and further blocks the fraud within the network. © 2025 the Author(s).

The research solution will propose three network architectures for the identification of fraud and integration within communication and cloud networks. The aim of the study is to perform real-time data classification, reporting of fraudulent subscribers, applications, and protocols;real-time analytics, and real-time blocking of data that is classified as fraudulent activity within the mobile data network. The main purpose is to achieve a higher energy/service fraud detection rate than similar work in the field, to provide a solution that integrates within the traditional network, and to further block fraud within the network. © 2025 the Author(s).

For an electrical system to function properly, active power reserves are needed to stabilize the frequency. Recent studies show that power utilities can convert variable wind power generation into dispatchable technology by integrating wind farms with battery energy storage systems. For this study, an IEEE 9 bus system was modified and modelled using Real-time Simulator computer-Aided Design (RSCAD) simulation package by Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) technologies. Using RSCAD, active power compensation control systems for both the wind energy system and the battery energy storage system were developed. The simulation results indicate that the developed control schemes are effective, and the combination of a wind energy system and the battery energy storage system can successfully provide the active power reserves and help balance the generation and demand. © 2024 IEEE.

The growing concerns about the environment, depletion of fossil fuels, and increasing energy consumption have led to a rise in the adoption of renewable energy sources. However, integrating these green energy sources into the existing power system requires infrastructure modifications. One popular approach is the establishment of off-grid operations through the use of microgrids. Microgrids are small-scale power systems that can operate both connected to and disconnected from the main power grid. This study focuses on a DC microgrid that utilizes a renewable energy system to power DC loads in case of a conventional grid failure. The system incorporates various components such as a universal diode rectifier, a boost converter, a small wind turbine (SWT) connected to a permanent magnet synchronous generator, and the Incremental Conductance (IC) algorithm. These components are employed to maximize the output power of the boost converter and maintain precise control over the output voltage, ensuring reliability. To efficiently operate the switching element and achieve a fast Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technique and voltage regulation despite varying wind speeds, a modified IC MPPT control method is utilized. A MATLAB/Simulink model representing an SWT system for a DC microgrid is developed to assess the dependability of the proposed system under changing wind speeds. © 2024 IEEE.

The following paper presents a dual ring star 16-QAM modulation scheme. SCMA codebook is designed using the Dual Ring Star 16-QAM (DRS16) constellation. Optimisation of the rr is executed by calculating the RR that ensures equidistance between neighbouring constellation points. When compared with the amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation, 16-QAM can reduce the symbols rate by four times that required by ASK modulation. The importance of ring ratios as the transition of amplitude levels of Star QAM constellation patterns critically affects the error detection. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Expanding renewable energy integration in a traditional grid is a vital means to strengthen the contribution of renewable resources in the energy landscape, aligning with the maintenance of adequate power systems and carbon peaking objectives, especially when power systems networks look into providing reliable, efficient and safe voltage to loads end consumption. As electricity demand keeps growing, and technologies evolve, traditional power systems are at some stage no longer able to provide sufficient power to the load. Emerging in this regard is the idea of incorporating new technology in the traditional grid to improve the generation capacity. Hybrid Renewable Energy appears to be a suitable solution for improving grid resilience and rentability, creating a primacy for power system performance benchmarking to its objectives. Thus, call to look at some contributions in the field of Hybrid Renewable Energy influence in power systems. © 2025 IEEE.

In this paper, a cell association method for proactively managing bandwidth in 5G fog radio access networks 5G FRANs) by considering user mobility is developed. The proposed method jointly utilises cell identifications (cell-IDs) information and distributions of sojourn time to develop a hidden semi-Markov model (HsMM) for predicting the most appropriate next cell that satisfies downlink rate requirements. Furthermore, the cell that offers the optimal rate is determined based on an optimization solution. The proposed HsMM considers ping-pong effects, missing values, and limited context from wireless networks to understand user mobility patterns. The result shows that the HsMM-based scheme yields a high accuracy performance according to the number of observation time intervals. Also, the proposed scheme produces an improved user satisfactory percentage compared to the existing schemes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Large generators are essential components in a power plant for ensuring the steady production and delivery of electric power for various purposes;thus, the generator protection system significantly impacts power system stability. Consequently, it has recently become necessary to consider upgrading the existing generator protective devices due to increased power demand and ageing infrastructure. This study proposes an approach for system protection during generator over-excitation condition that occurs when the magnetic core of the generator is saturated. When this occurs, stray flux is induced in non-laminated components, resulting in overheating of the generator. The key aspects considered in this study were the over-excitation circumstances that affect generators and their protection mechanisms. This research work developed a logic diagram for volts per hertz protection relay to prevent over-excitation conditions in a generator. The hardware in the loop test bed is implemented to test the volts per hertz protection schemes. The hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test-bed was implemented using real-time digital simulator (RTDS) and SEL 700G IED. Simulation results proved that a SEL700G volt per hertz protection function (24) is reliable for overexcited generators. © 2024 Inderscience Publishers. All rights reserved.
