As a new space station succeeding the International Space Station (ISS), a lunar orbit manned base, called "Gateway," is considered and manned lunar surface exploration via the Gateway is also studied. To realize manned lunar surface exploration, new technologies are required to overcome the severe condition of the lunar night. As one of these technologies, applying wireless power transfer (WPT) to a spacecraft, such as a rover, is proposed. The WPT system contributes to the improvement of heat insulation performance and is ideal for reducing the weight of the battery of the spacecraft. In addition, magnetic transmissive multi-layer insulation (MT-MLI) is developed to suppress the generation of eddy currents. In WPT experiments with MT-MLI, the power transmission efficiency between coils is 90% or more. Furthermore, thermal vacuum tests demonstrate that the combination of WPT and MT-MLI reduces thermal leakage. © 2023 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

GateKeeper-GPU: Fast and Accurate Pre-Alignment Filtering in Short Read Mapping

At the last step of short read mapping, the candidate locations of the reads on the reference genome are verified to compute their differences from the corresponding reference segments using sequence alignment algorithms. Calculating the similarities and differences between two sequences is still computationally expensive since approximate string matching techniques traditionally inherit dynamic programming algorithms with quadratic time and space complexity. We introduce GateKeeper-GPU, a fast and accurate pre-alignment filter that efficiently reduces the need for expensive sequence alignment. GateKeeper-GPU provides two main contributions: first, improving the filtering accuracy of GateKeeper (a lightweight pre-alignment filter), and second, exploiting the massive parallelism provided by the large number of GPU threads of modern GPUs to examine numerous sequence pairs rapidly and concurrently. By reducing the work, GateKeeper-GPU provides an acceleration of 2.9× to sequence alignment and up to 1.4× speedup to the end-to-end execution time of a comprehensive read mapper (mrFAST). AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) is a part of the synchronous generator and it is responsible for regulating the reactive power and voltage level under normal operating terms at different load levels. The modeled system composed of the amplifier, exciter, sensor and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. In order to model the system state space method is used. Also, their specifications and behaviors are discussed briefly. Simulation of the AVR system is carried out on the interface developed by Matlab GUI and the results are presented. The generator terminal voltage step responses are estimated by studying the controller parameters. In this paper, a system using Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) method as a tuning method for determining the parameters of PID control for an AVR system is proposed. Also the transient stability of AVR system with PID parameters change is proposed. © 2013 IEEE.

An approximate nonlinear estimation method for continuous-time systems with discrete-time measurements is developed. The approach evaluates the Gaussian sum approximation of the a priori probability density function (pdf) by solving the Fokker-Planck equation numerically. Approximate evaluation of the a posteriori pdf is achieved by using Gaussian sums, a priori pdf and measurements in Bayes rule. Mean and covariance values of Gaussians are chosen by the help of an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF), with respect to a region where a priori and a posteriori pdfs are approximated. Weights of the Gaussians are updated using the deterministically chosen grid points in the specified domains. UKF here acts as a one step look ahead mechanism to determine the high probability regions where a priori and a posteriori pdfs can reside. The a priori and a posteriori pdfs are approximated around these high probability regions. The developed approach is compared with UKF and Particle Filter in a one dimensional nonlinear system.

Nowadays, there are several difficulties are met in the selection of appropriate conditions, place of use, and purpose of photovoltaic (PV) systems. The reason is that electrical power output of PV system shows a non-linear variation, unlike other applications, depending on the internal resistance of electrical devices (loads) as well as radiation intensity and environmental temperature. Therefore, electrical characteristics of PV panel-load must be evaluated together for correct optimization. In this study, running an electrical device having optimized curve of linear load on a monthly basis of a panel was analyzed. At the same time, surface temperature of the panel, panel inclination angle and value of the load that concerning electrical load impact on power output of PV panels was examined experimentally and theoretically.

The utilization ratio of wind energy, which is one of the renewable energy sources, is increased around 25% since last 15 years. However, the parameters such as performance of wind turbines and climate features are not analyzed adequately. At the analysis stage of these parameters, data mining techniques are required to be used. In this study, the agglomerative hierarchical clustering method which is one of the data mining techniques is used to analyze the provinces located in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey in terms of average wind speed. Nearest neighbor algorithm is used as the clustering algorithm. Euclidean, Manhattan and Minkowski distance metrics are used determine the optimum hierarchical clustering results in this algorithm. The achieved clustering results based on Euclidean distance metric provide the optimum inferences to expert according to other distance metrics. © 2011 IEEE.

Three separate solar farms that provide 15 kW power for each farm are modelled using Matlab Simulink real-time analysis software in this study. Each solar farm models are constituted by connecting 170W photovoltaic (PV) panels and energy conversion is performed with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms in each converter. The MPPT algorithm utilized in the control step of converters is developed using Perturb and Observe (P&O) structure. The converters used in the solar farms are designed in boost converter topology while output voltages are collected in DC busbar with parallel connection of converters. The converters are connected to busbar over interphase transformers (IPT). The DC busbar voltage is applied to a full bridge inverter to generate 3-phase AC voltages at the output of inverter. The three-phase inverter is controlled with sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) scheme, which is developed with phase shifted carrier signals. The load of inverter is set to an adjustable load, which is capable to be increased up to 50 kW. The measurement points seen in the Simulink design are analysed in detail. Each measurement point's definition and screen captures are also evaluated in the study. © 2011 IEEE.

The wind power based energy generation technologies are intensively studied in renewable energy generation issues since last century. The main demands directed to a renewable energy source are being reliable, sustainable and low-cost. Several studies are performed to increase the efficiency of an installed wind power plants. The preliminary analyses such as geographical structures, climate conditions, and land topography should be also considered during feasibility analyses of a wind plant. Although the obtained data could be processed by using numerical or various estimation methods, the data mining techniques provide more accurate results among others. In this study, the agglomerative hierarchical clustering tool is designed and is capable to process any data set supplied by expert to system. The case study is performed using monthly average wind speed data of Central Anatolia Region of Turkey in the paper. It is observed that the developed tool clusters the given sample data set in an efficient and successful way. © 2011 IEEE.
