We propose a message-passing algorithm of joint channel estimation and decoding for OFDM systems, where expectation propagation is exploited to deal with channel estimation. Specially, the message updating is formulated into a recursive form. As a result, for system with K subcarriers and L channel taps, only O(K + L) messages need to be tracked, and meanwhile they can be efficiently calculated using FFT with complexity O(K-A- + K log2 K), where -A- denotes the constellation size. Numerical experiments show that our algorithm achieves BER performance within 0.5 dB of the known-channel bound. © 2014 IEEE.

For the spatially correlated multiuser MIMO-OFDM channels, the conventional iterative MMSE-SIC detection suffers from a considerable performance loss. In this paper, we use the factor graph framework to design robust detection algorithms by clustering a group of symbols to combat the spatial correlation and using the principle of expectation propagation to improve message passing. Furthermore, as the complexity of detection becomes one of the issues in the design of large-scale multiuser MIMO-OFDM systems, we propose a low-complexity approximate message-passing algorithm by opening the channel transition node, which eliminates the expensive matrix inversions involved in the MMSE-SIC based algorithms. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the proposed algorithms. © 2014 IEEE.

Recently, researchers have discovered unexpected bumps in the detection rate curve of yet another steganographic scheme (YASS). We refer to this abnormal phenomenon as non-monotonic security performance. This paper first analyzes this abnormality and points out that it is caused by the non-uniformity in probability of coincidence of (Formula presented.) embedding blocks and (Formula presented.) JPEG blocks. Based on this observation, we propose that further randomizing data embedding positions can overcome the non-monotonic security performance. Experimental results have demonstrated a complete removal of bumps in the detection rate curve of YASS after further randomization. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

There is a significant need for more comprehensive electromagnetic articulography (EMA) datasets that can provide matched acoustics and articulatory kinematic data with good spatial and temporal resolution. The Marquette University Electromagnetic Articulography Mandarin Accented English (EMA-MAE) corpus provides kinematic and acoustic data from 40 gender and dialect balanced speakers representing 20 Midwestern standard American English L1 speakers and 20 Mandarin Accented English (MAE) L2 speakers, half Beijing region dialect and half are Shanghai region dialect. Three dimensional EMA data were collected at a 400 Hz sampling rate using the NDI Wave system, with articulatory sensors on the midsagittal lips, lower incisors, tongue blade and dorsum, plus lateral lip corner and tongue body. Sensors provide three-dimensional position data as well as two-dimensional orientation data representing the orientation of the sensor plane. Data have been corrected for head movement relative to a fixed reference sensor and also adjusted using a biteplate calibration system to place the data in an articulatory working space relative to each subject's individual midsagittal and maxillary occlusal planes. Speech materials include isolated words chosen to focus on specific contrasts between the English and Mandarin languages, as well as sentences and paragraphs for continuous speech, totaling approximately 45 minutes of data per subject. A beta version of the EMA-MAE corpus is now available, and the full corpus is in preparation for public release to help advance research in areas such as pronunciation modeling, acoustic-articulatory inversion, L1-L2 comparisons, pronunciation error detection, and accent modification training.

A bi-capon beamforming （BCB） algorithm for multi-input multi-output （MIMO） radar is developed on the basis of correlation domain. By vectorizing the echo matrix and its transpose, the conventional capon cost function is transformed into bi-capon quadratic functions. By calculating two lower dimensional weight vectors with sub-matrices of the correlation matrix, BCB can significantly decrease the computational complexity and the requirement of training samples. In the presence of short data records, BCB can achieve better interference suppression performance than fully adaptive capon algorithm. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The paper investigates the performance of a hybrid satellite-terrestrial cooperative network (HSTCN), where some terrestrial amplify-and-forward (AF) relays are employed to assist the signal transmission from a satellite to a destination, which is corrupted by multiple co-channel interferences (CCIs). In this system, the satellite links undergo Shadowing-Rician fading while the terrestrial links experience Rayleigh fading. Specifically, by assuming that maximum ratio combining (MRC) is used at the destination, we first derive the moment generating function (MGF) of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). With the help of MGF, we then present the analytical average symbol error rate (ASER) expression for the considered cooperative system. Moreover, to gain further insights, the asymptotic ASER analysis in terms of the diversity order and array gain is also developed. Finally, numerical results are given to demonstrate the validity of the performance analysis and the impacts of shadowing parameters, relay number and CCIs on the considered HSTCN. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper introduces the use of two new features for speaker identification, Residual Phase Cepstrum Coefficients (RPCC) and Glottal Flow Cepstrum Coefficients (GLFCC), to capture speaker-specific characteristics from their vocal excitation patterns. Results on a cross-lingual speaker identification task taken from the NIST 2004 SRE demonstrate that these RPCC and GLFCC features are significantly more accurate than traditional mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC). In particular, these two new features give better results with smaller amounts of training data, due to lower model complexity. © 2013 IEEE.

Noise-robust modification method for gaussian-based models with application to radar HRRP recognition

In this letter, we introduce a novel noise-robust modification method for Gaussian-based models to enhance the performance of radar high-resolution range profile (HRRP) recognition under the test condition of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and we develop an efficient scheme for its computation. This noise-robust modification method is implemented by revising the trained Gaussian-based model according to the estimated SNR of test HRRP. We apply the proposed method to adaptive Gaussian classifier and truncated stick-breaking hidden Markov model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the average recognition rate for noisy HRRP test samples while offering recognition performance comparable to that of original model for clean HRRP test samples. Moreover, even when the SNR of test HRRP samples is not precisely estimated, we can still obtain an acceptable result with the proposed method. © 2004-2012 IEEE.
