To scavenge the energy from the environment and extend the network lifetime, some wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been equipped with energy harvesters recently. However, the variable amount of environmental energy can affect the reliability of energy harvesting wireless sensor networks (EH-WSNs). In addition, data transmission over a wireless media is vulnerable. Hence, utilizing suitable error control schemes are necessary to improve the reliability. Regarding this point, Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) and Cooperative ARQ (C-ARQ) schemes are applied in this generation of WSNs. Conventional ARQ as well as C-ARQ scheme are considered and examined through simulation. A comparative analysis of these two schemes in terms of energy consumption, energy efficiency and reliability is provided. This analysis shows that C-ARQ is the more appropriate error control scheme in EH-WSNs to manage the variable environmental energy and improve the reliability and energy efficiency.

With the development of Internet technology and human computing, the computing environment has changed dramatically over the last three decades. Cloud computing emerges as a paradigm of Internet computing in which dynamical, scalable and often virtuMized resources are provided as services. With virtualization technology, cloud computing offers diverse services （such as virtual computing, virtual storage, virtual bandwidth, etc.） for the public by means of multi-tenancy mode. Although users are enjoying the capabilities of super-computing and mass storage supplied by cloud computing, cloud security still remains as a hot spot problem, which is in essence the trust management between data owners and storage service providers. In this paper, we propose a data coloring method based on cloud watermarking to recognize and ensure mutual reputations. The experimental results show that the robustness of reverse cloud generator can guarantee users＇ embedded social reputation identifications. Hence, our work provides a reference solution to the critical problem of cloud security.

MapReduce provided a novel computing model for complex job decomposition and sub-tasks management to support cloud computing with large distributed data sets. However, its performance is significantly influenced by the working data distributions over those data sets. In this paper, we put forward a novel model to balance data distribution to improve cloud computing performance in data-intensive applications, such as distributed data mining. By extending the classic MapReduce model with an agent-aid layer and abstracting working load requests for data blocks as tokens, the agents can reason from previously received tokens about where to send other tokens in order to balance the working tasks and improve system performance. Our key contribution lies in building an efficient token routing algorithm in spite of agents' unknowing to the global state of data distribution in cloud. We also built a prototype of our system, and the experimental results show that our approach can significantly improve the efficiency of cloud computing. Developing a non-invasive direct brain control of artificial limbs is both challenging and desirable. Such a sensory and control system, if successful, will have profound impact on the disabled. In this paper, we present the design of a control algorithm capable of automatic reconfiguration to account for changing sensor conditions, selection of an appropriate transfer function based on input characteristics, and adaptation to adjust output strength based on the user's activity. This algorithm is designed for use with our developed hybrid non-invasive brain monitoring technique for the purpose of artificial limb control. The development of the algorithm and its initial performance together with our sensory system are presented and discussed. © 2011 AACC American Automatic Control Council.

An improved continuation power flow method for the AC/DC system is proposed in this paper. The three level control strategies and the coordination of the control modes for DC systems are presented. Firstly, the load-type continuation power flow is introduced in brief. Secondly, the concept of the three-level control and their coordination are proposed. The reactive power control strategy is classified into two categories: 1) Reactive Power under Control and 2) Voltage Magnitude under Control. If the control angle is out of its range, the converter transformer tap should be changed to restore the angle. The voltage or reactive power demand is achieved by coordinating the three level control strategies. Finally, the details of the proposed method are proposed. Numerical simulations show that the approach presented in this paper has advantages in terms of convergence and speed. © 2011 IEEE.

Web service schema matching is the preliminary phase of service composition and service Mashup. With the entry of large numbers of services on the Internet, it will be difficult to find and suggest the most relevant service candidates for new composition and Mashup. Furthermore, the composition and Mashup candidates must be confirmed by manual work which is very inefficient and even inefficacious. In this work, we present an approach for web service schema matching based on service invocation instance duplicates. This approach predicts the schema relationship between web service parameters based on duplicates among invocation data sets and is very different from the syntactical-based and semantic-based matching approaches. It can be used for predicting and verifying service composition and Mashup candidates. © 2011 IEEE.

Web service schema matching is the preliminary treatment phase of service composition and service mashup. With the entry and exit of large numbers of services on the Internet, it will be difficult to find and suggest the most relevant service candidates for new composition and mashup. In this work, we present an approach for web service schema matching based on characteristic vector consisted of multi-type service parameter information element. This schema matching approach is different form the main syntactical-based and semantic-based matching approaches, and will predict schema relationship more effectively and adaptable for web service. An experiment on real data shows the effectiveness of this approach. © 2011 IEEE.

A Social network graph shows social interactions and relationships between individuals in a specific social environment, which is very helpful for analyzing social relationships, activities, structures, etc. The author quantized the strengths of social objects' relationships in social environment using an improved vector space model. Gaussian mixture model was employed to set the threshold for identifying social relationships adaptively and divide social subgroups automatically. According to the threshold, social network graph would be constructed based on performance measures. It is concluded that hidden social relationships can be discovered effectively by using this approach which is very flexible and adaptive for dynamic information feedback mechanism. © 2011 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

This paper presents a social interactive robot Nancy that has been developed in Social Robotics laboratory, National University of Singapore. Fundamentally different from factory robots, Nancy's design focuses on social interaction and social intelligent system. The design objectives and consideration are examined in the beginning, followed by the description of hardware and software architectures. Contrast to current existing social robots, Nancy has a graphical user interface (GUI), which acts as an additional channel for human-robot interaction. This GUI helps users to have a better understanding of Nancy's internal states and hence make users feel more comfortable during the interaction with Nancy. Visitors' interaction experience with Nancy is discussed together with Nancy's social skills. © 2011 AICIT.
