Crowd Simulation and Its Applications: Recent Advances

This article surveys the state-of-the-art crowd simulation techniques and their selected applications, with its focus on our recent research advances in this rapidly growing research field. We first give a categorized overview on the mainstream methodologies of crowd simulation. Then, we describe our recent research advances on crowd evacuation,pedestrian crowds, crowd formation, traffic simulation, and swarm simulation. Finally, we offer our viewpoints on open crowd simulation research challenges and point out potential future directions in this field.

Digital Fabrication technology in the Library: Where We Are and Where We Are Going

Stephanie is interested in creating dynamic hands-on learning opportunities in libraries especially around making STEM topics and digital creation. With experience in youth services technology and instruction she delights in helping people of all ages discover what the 21st century public library can do. Information science and technology at Syracuse University. Her research lies at the intersection of human computer interaction and social theory with particular interest in feminist science and technology studies and ubiquitous computing. Lauren's dissertation work explores the relationship between the human body and embedded/implanted technology. Lauren is a student researcher with the BITS Lab at Syracuse University.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY Makerspaces are environments where crafters and techies can come together to create, share and learn. Many libraries support the maker movement by providing access to a variety of technologies from sewing machines and looms to recording equipment and production tools, an expansion of services that is in line with promoting literacy, community and lifelong learning. About one third of makerspaces charged a fee or required membership in 2013, though some, including libraries and museums, are supported by major funding agencies. Digital fabrication technology or 3D printers are increasingly available through library-based makerspaces and extend opportunities for STEM education, but libraries face challenges from high initial and ongoing costs, user training and even encouraging users in 3D thinking and design. 3D printers can be a powerful stimulus for creativity, learning and sharing, even promoting jobs and community development.

Modeling and resolving lock contention for multi-threaded systems

Locks are efficient concurrent control mechanisms to ensure that shared resources are accessed by only a single thread in multi-threaded applications. However, for multi-core systems, lock usage leads to lock contention, which degrades program performance, increases system response time, and negatively affects scalability. This paper initially models lock contention from two aspects: static structure and dynamic behavior. Static constraints of lock contention that describe the contention among threads and the dynamic constraints that define the lock request behavior during contended process are presented. In addition, a contention-aware lock (CA-Lock) is proposed. The CA-Lock is an ordinary lock when there is no contention;it improves the concurrency by transforming into software transactional memory (STM) when the contention is serious. For those situations that are not fitted with STM, the CA-Lock can transform back into an ordinary lock. Primary experimental results show that the CA-Lock can track the best world of lock or STM. © 2011 ICIC International.

Performance problem has been the focus of embedded software development. An instrumentation method is promoted in order to get the execution time and the number of times a function was called. And how to implement a profiler, profiling the programs running on ARM processors with Linux, is discussed through that method. This paper also gives the comparison between our profiler and others' methods in use. The result shows that our profiler has more advantages than some popular profilers in Linux in profiling recursive or library functions. © 2010 IEEE.

As the computing ability of high performance computers are improved by increasing the number of computing elements, how to utilize the available computing resources becomes an important issue. Different strategies to solve an problem based on a multi-processing system can bring about distinct performance. In this paper, we propose a method to predict the performance of parallel applications. The method describes the parallel features of the multi-processing systems in a hierarchy way, and evaluates solutions based on the description. In this way, programmers can find the better solution of an application before real programming.

The Ambient Kitchen is a high fidelity prototype for exploring the design of pervasive computing algorithms and applications for everyday environments. The environment integrates data projectors, cameras, RFID tags and readers, object mounted accelerometers, and under-floor pressure sensing using a combination of wired and wireless networks. The Ambient Kitchen is a lab-based replication of a real kitchen where careful design has hidden the additional technology, and allows both the evaluation of pervasive computing prototypes and the simultaneous capture of the multiple synchronized streams of sensor data. Previous work exploring the requirements for situated support for people with cognitive impairments motivated the design of the physical and technical infrastructure and we describe both our motivations and previous work on interaction design in kitchen environments. Finally, we describe how our lab-based prototype has been put to use as: a design tool for designers;a design tool for users;an observatory to collect sensor data for activity recognition algorithm development, and an evaluation test bed. Data replication is one of the key components in data grid architecture as it enhances data access and reliability and minimises the cost of data transmission. In this paper, we address the problem of reducing the overheads of the replication mechanisms that drive the data management components of a data grid. We propose an approach that extends the resource broker with policies that factor in user quality of service as well as service costs when replicating and transferring data. A realistic model of the data grid was created to simulate and explore the performance of the proposed policy. The policy displayed an effective means of improving the performance of the grid network traffic and is indicated by the improvement of speed and cost of transfers by brokers. © 2006 IEEE.

Heterogeneous data co-clustering has attracted more and more attention in recent years due to its high impact on various applications. While the co-clustering algorithms for two types of heterogeneous data (denoted by pair-wise co-clustering), such as documents and terms, have been well studied in the literature, the work on more types of heterogeneous data (denoted by high-order co-clustering) is still very limited. As an attempt in this direction, in this paper, we worked on a specific case of high-order co-clustering in which there is a central type of objects that connects the other types so as to form a star structure of the interrelationships. Actually, this case could be a very good abstract for many real-world applications, such as the co-clustering of categories, documents and terms in text mining. In our philosophy, we treated such kind of problems as the fusion of multiple pair-wise co-clustering sub-problems with the constraint of the star structure. Accordingly, we proposed the concept of consistent bipartite graph co-partitioning, and developed an algorithm based on semi-definite programming (SDP) for efficient computation of the clustering results. Experiments on toy problems and real data both verified the effectiveness of our proposed method. Copyright 2005 ACM.

Image clustering, an important technology for image processing, has been actively researched for a long period of time. Especially in recent years, with the explosive growth of the Web, image clustering has even been a critical technology to help users digest the large amount of online visual information. However, as far as we know, many previous works on image clustering only used either low-level visual features or surrounding texts, but rarely exploited these two kinds of information in the same framework. To tackle this problem, we proposed a novel method named consistent bipartite graph co-partitioning in this paper, which can cluster Web images based on the consistent fusion of the information contained in both low-level features and surrounding texts. In particular, we formulated it as a constrained multi-objective optimization problem, which can be efficiently solved by semi-definite programming (SDP). Experiments on a real-world Web image collection showed that our proposed method outperformed the methods only based on low-level features or surround texts. Copyright © 2005 ACM.
