software standards are highly recommended because they promise faster and more efficient ways for software development with proven techniques and standard notations. Designers who adopt standards like UML and design patterns to construct models and designs in the processes of development suffer from a lack of communication and integration of various models and designs. Also, the problem of implicit inconsistency caused by making changes to components of the models and designs will significantly increase the cost and error for the process of maintenance. In this paper, an XML-based unified model is proposed to solve the problems and to improve both software development and maintenance through unification and integration.

A meta Web search engine first sends a user's search requests to its referenced search engines. The results returned by these search engines are then integrated by one result-integrating algorithm and returned to the user. Query precision, completeness and response speed are directly affected by the choice of result integration algorithm. By analyzing common result-integrating algorithms, this paper recommends several unproved algorithms to improve the coherence of search results.

Popular WWW pages are stored in places which are close to users by WWW cache technology to speed up the fetching of these objects. Information in the WWW cache shows users' recent interest. Users' interest can be widely used in customizing WWW pages, filtering information, pre-fetching information and so on. The key to using information in the WWW cache effectively is to build an adaptive user interest model and construct an adaptive algorithm for interest mining. Interest can be specialized by the tuple (term, weight) in the simple interest model. Association relations are not mined in this model, so the interest cannot be associated in expressing users' interest. Basing on analyzing the WWW cache model, we propose a two-dimension interest model. It is proved that mined users' interest can show users' current interest states. Inferential relations are well considered in the two-dimension interest model. This model is not a simple extension of the simple interest model, but the full update and the related algorithm. Interrelated methods for storing the two-dimension interest model, computing the model effectively and updating the model in real time are considered.

For the purpose of building the more adaptable intelligent knowledge system to the dynamic environment,it is necessary to construct the knowledge structure with the strategy for the efficient memory management first of all. The efficient memory management can make the retention of memory and knowledge retrieval easier. Specially the concept of forgetting solves the problem of knowledge retrieval from the complex and large database in memory. Accordingly in this paper we adopt the theory relating short-term memory, long-term memory and forgetting and propose the intelligent knowledge system with the hierarchical associative memory managed by storage management strategy. It has the function of adaptive learning, selective processing, perception, inference and data extraction. This model is applied to the medical area and tested with symptom data.

In this paper is described how computer supported cooperative work can be used to enhance project development memory, focusing on software development. The collaboration model that is presented is based upon the concepts of communication, coordination and cooperation. Each of these concepts is analyzed regarding software specification. The paper presents some examples of systems that seek to capture and refine group ideas through the process of argumentation. The paper also shows how the building of project memory can facilitate the recovery of the context and the reasoning that led to the taking of project decisions.

A new evolutionary algorithm, which can contract search space based on the partial ordering relation and is designed to solve nonlinear programming (NLP), is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the partial ordering relation is used for evaluating an individual, which ensures that individual competition is more impartial. Secondly, by taking advantage of incomplete evolution, which provides good individuals in short time, we can locate regions of optimal solutions and contract the search space and thus reduce the search space and increase the convergence rate. Thirdly, we prove that the algorithm can find optimal solutions. Finally, the algorithm can be easily parallelized. Numerical experiments demonstrate that our techniques are superior to other methods in terms of solution quality and robustness.

The CoStore cluster architecture is proposed to construct a reliable and highly available storage system. A prototype CoStore was implemented and its performance was measured with the cluster being mirrored in various network environments. The preliminary results demonstrate that there is little impact on performance if the cluster is mirrored in efficient campus network environments with high bandwidth and low latency. As a result the CoStore architecture considerably reinforces a storage system's preparedness for disaster recovery without sacrificing performance.

Applications of the Hough Transform (HT) have been limited to small-size images for a long time. For large-size images, peak detection and line verification become much more time-consuming. Many HT-based line detection methods are not able to detect line width. This paper proposes a new approach for detecting line segments using HT, with applicability to large size images, especially for those situations where line width is critical. Our approach applies a boundary recorder to eliminate redundant analyses, and employs an image-analysis-based line-verification method to overcome the difficulty of using a threshold to distinguish short lines from noise. It avoids overlapping lines by removing the pixels of detected line segments, a method which is more robust than only clearing the N/spl times/N neighborhood. This approach could be easily extended to improved HT methods that perform global accumulation. Experimental results show that this approach is very time efficient for large-size images.

Recognizing graphic objects from binary images is an important task in many real-life applications. Generally, there are two ways to do the graphics recognition: one-step methods and two-step methods. The former recognizes graphic objects from binary images directly, while the latter consists of vectorization and postprocessing. Neither of them is perfect enough to handle all difficulties. The paper first reviews popular graphics recognition methods to understand their advantages and disadvantages. Next, the performance comparison between two classes of methods is made in two important aspects: the time efficiency and the graphics quality, and the experimental results of time-efficiency comparison of 7 popular methods are also reported. Finally, we propose a new hybrid graphics-recognition paradigm to integrate the advantages of both one-step methods and two-step methods and minimize their disadvantages. The proposed paradigm is capable of recognizing straight lines, arcs, circles and curves efficiently, and is helpful for extracting text images in text-graphics touching cases.

This paper presents the methodology, results and difficulties encountered in the development and delivery of a course through the Internet.
