Designing component-based application that meets performance requirements remains a challenging problem, and usually requires a prototype to be constructed to benchmark performance. Building a custom benchmark suite is however costly and tedious. This demonstration illustrates an approach for generating customized component-based benchmark applications using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. All the platform related plumbing and basic performance testing routines are encapsulated in MDA generation "cartridges"along with default implementations of testing logic. We will show how to use a tailored version of the UML 2.0 Testing Profile to model a customized load testing client. The performance configuration (such as transaction mix and spiking simulations) can also be modeled using the UML model. Executing the generated deployable code will collect the performance testing data automatically. The tool implementation is based on a widely used open source MDA framework AndroMDA. We extended it by providing a cartridge for a performance testing tailored version of the UML 2.0 Testing Profile. Essentially, we use OO-based meta-modeling in designing and implementing a lightweight performance testing domain specific language with supporting infrastructure on top of the existing UML testing standard. © 2005 ACM.

WS-Policy4MASC is an XML language for specification of policies for run-time Web service management (monitoring and control) activities executed by the Manageable and Adaptable Services Compositions (MASC) middleware. Among its original contributions are specfication of diverse business values (benefits or costs, tangible or intangible, agreed or possible, absolute or relative) and specification of various control strategies maximizing different business values (e.g., only agreed intangible benefits). To facilitate development of Web service systems that can be managed with WS-Policy4MASC and the MASC middleware and to improve alignment between run-time management activities and design-time models, we developed novel UML profiles for WS-Policy4MASC. Their original contributions are in improved support for: a) specification of run-time management activities and business values within design-time models, b) automatic creation of run-time management policies from design-time models, c) feedback of run-time management information values into analysis of design-time models. We validated our solutions on detailed examples.

This paper describes an approach for generating customized benchmark applications from a software architecture description using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. The benchmark generation and performance data capture tool implementation is based on widely used open source MDA frameworks. The business logic of the benchmark application is modeled in UML and generated by taking advantage of the existing generation "cartridges" so that the current component technology can be exploited in the benchmark. This greatly reduces the effort and expertise needed for benchmarking with complex component technology. We have also extended the MDA framework to model and generate a load testing suite and automatic performance measurement infrastructure. The approach complements current model-based performance prediction and analysis methods by generating the benchmark application from the same application architecture that the performance models are derived from. This provides the potential for tightly integrating runtime performance measurement with model-based prediction either for model validation or improving model prediction accuracy, We illustrate the approach using a case study based on EJB component technology.

A software architecture is composed of a collection of design decisions. Each design decision helps or hinders certain Non-Functional Requirements (NFR). Current software architecture views focus on expressing components and connectors in the system. Design decisions and their relationships with non-functional requirements are often captured in separate design documentation, not explicitly expressed in any views. This disassociation makes architecture comprehension and architecture evolution harder. In this paper, we propose a UML profile for modeling design decisions and an associated UML profile for modeling non-functional requirements in a generic way. The two UML profiles treat design decisions and nonfunctional requirements as first-class elements. Modeled design decisions always refer to existing architectural elements and thus maintain traceability between the two. We provide a mechanism for checking consistency over this traceability. An exemplar is given as a way to demonstrate the feasibility of our approach. © 2007 IEEE.

Meeting performance requirements is a challenging software engineering problem in designing and constructing middleware based applications. Considerable efforts have been spent to build performance analysis models from the application architectural models that can be applied before the implementation phase. Accurate analysis models require realistic performance data to be populated into the performance models, which represents the performance characteristics of the middleware and the application hosted by the middleware runtime environment. Benchmark applications are usually developed to collect these performance data. However, benchmark generation for middleware-based systems is a costly and time consuming process because of the complexity of programming models and technology specific features of different types of middleware. The paper proposes an approach to automate benchmark generation processes following Model Driven Development methodology, which aims to construct deployable benchmark applications from the high-level design models. A modelling language is designed specifically for performance testing domain by using the recently released Microsoft Domain Specific Language toolkit. This approach can be integrated into Visual Studio 2005 Team System as a "plug in " to model and generate load testing suites. Copyright 2006 ACM.

WS-Policy4MASC is a new XML language that we developed for specification of monitoring and control (particularly, adaptation) policies in the Manageable and Adaptable Services Compositions (MASC) middleware. It extends the Web Services Policy Framework (WS-Policy) by defining new types of policy assertions. Goal policy assertions specify requirements and guarantees to be met in desired normal operation. Action policy assertions specify actions to be taken if certain conditions are met or not met. Utility policy assertions specify monetary values assigned to particular situations. Meta-policy assertions are used to specify which action policy assertions are alternatives and which business value-driven conflict resolution strategy should be used. WS- Policy4MASC also enables detailed specification of additional information necessary for run-time policy-driven management. We evaluated feasibility of the WS- Policy4MASC solutions by implementing a policy repository and other modules in MASC. We examined their usefulness on a set of realistic scenarios.
