The successful implementation of smart grids depends on energy efficiency, mostly relying on the operation of electricity source infrastructure. The combination of energy sources undoubtedly provides complexity in real applications. Some of the challenges for a smart grids comes from the intermittent renewable energy characteristics such as bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, solar, ocean power, and wind energy to the base load energy such as natural gas, coal, and nuclear. This paper aims to review the implementation of current advances of smart grids from combined energy mix sources. The review includes major components of smart grids, i.e. power plants, monitoring systems, substations, power transmission and distribution, controllers and smart meters. The review also investigates the state of the art contribution of power electronics, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things to more significant optimization, safety and efficiency in these areas. The results are expected to provide a further gap analysis of applicable technologies and best practices in mixed electricity generation sources. The final result will also consider its application in an archipelago country such as Indonesia.

The critical minerals industries in Indonesia may pose possible environmental and human health risks due to the release of pollutants into soil, water, and air, as well as the use of materials and energy. This study investigates the possible environmental and human health impacts of Indonesia's nickel, gold, copper, tin, and bauxite mining and processing industries. This study utilizes the latest version of the OpenLCA software, version 2.0, in combination with the Ecoinvent 3.8 database. To evaluate potential environmental consequences and health effects on humans, CML-IA Baseline and Environmental Priority Strategies (EPS) are employed in product development. The EPS system was developed utilizing a hierarchical methodology with the objective of furnishing the product developer with data regarding the financial impact of human health impairment resulting from a particular product development. The production of one tonne of gold, nickel, bauxite, tin, and copper results in the emission of 7.34.E+07, 4.61.E+04, 3.10.E+04, 1.02.E+04, 8.01.E+03 kg CO₂ eq/t, respectively, contributing to global warming. This production is associated with asthma cases of 7.79.E+01 (gold industry), 2.21.E−03 (copper industry), 1.81.E−03 (tin industry), 9.21.E−04 (nickel industry), and 4.71.E−06 (bauxite industry) Personyears/t. Electricity consumption and the release of carbon dioxide are the main factors contributing to global warming. The primary cause of asthma cases is the utilization of fuel oil and electricity. Power plant chimneys can employ various technologies, such as cyclones, bag filters, and scrubbers, to mitigate the release of polluting gas emissions. The critical mineral industry must prioritize handling and governing of steam power facilities to minimize their negative effects on the environment and human health. © 2024 The Authors

Synthesis of mercaptoethyl ester of palm fatty acid distillate: Effects of dehydration methods

This research was aimed to evaluate the synthesis of mercaptoethyl ester of palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) where water as a byproduct was removed by using vacuum distillation and azeotropic distillation. The reactions were done in a batch reactor using para-toluene sulfonic acid (pTSA) as a catalyst. The performances of the synthesis were evaluated by measuring the sulfhydryl content and yield of the product. Compared to dehydration by vacuum distillation, dehydration by azeotropic distillation gave lower sulfhydryl content and yield but faster reaction completion. Azeotropic distillation gave sulfhydryl content and yield in the range of 6–7% and 57–74%, respectively. Vacuum distillation gave sulfhydryl content and yield in the range of 7–9% and 75–85%, respectively.

Wet oxidation pretreatment effect for enhancing bioethanol production from cassava peels, water hyacinth, and green algae (Ulva)

Biomass pretreatment is the most important yet challenging process in biofuel production, with the aim of making part of the biomass more accessible for further treatment. There are four fundamental types of pretreatment techniques employed for bioethanol production: physical, chemical, physicochemical, and biological. Wet oxidation (WO) in fact is known to be one of the most effective pretreatments to liberate more cellulose from lignocellulosic material by heating, in purpose of reducing acid usage in the bioethanol process. The effect of two different conditions of WO pretreatment on fractionation cassava peels, Ulva algae, and water hyacinth was investigated. WO resulted in an increase of carbohydrate content of lignocellulosic residues as a result of the solubilization of cellulose and hemicellulose. The highest carbohydrate content of 1.5g/L was obtained in the pretreatment at 125°C, 45 min, 1.5 bar pH3 for water hyacinth. The pretreatment efficiency was 95%. Changing the pretreatment operating conditions to 130°C, 75 min, 1.8 bar and pH1 allowed to yield high carbohydrate from cassava peel and Ulva algae in respective proportion of 2.38g/L and 1.83 g/L. The WO efficiency was respectively 63% and 95% for cassava peels and Ulva algae. Ethanol yields in respective proportion of 0.26 g/l; 0.31 g/l and 0.2 g/l from Ulva algae, cassava peel and water hyacinth showed the optimum condition of *** enzymatic convertibility of glucose to ethanol.

Bioenergy is one of the renewable energies which is predicted to be a main energy in the next few years. It can play the important role to change the current fossil fuel-based energy into a green energy which has a low carbon footprint. A research about how to develop a bioenergy have been done by a lot of reseacher. However, especially in Indonesia, there is just few research to study about bioenergy from societal aspects poin of view such as the understanding and awarness of bioenergy among citizens. In this research, we have investigated senior high school students' knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes interconected to bioenergy with online survery. The survey instrument used in the study was adopted from P. Halder's study. The data was collected from students at senior high school th (SMAN 10) Jambi City. The results showed that the students awareness of bioenergy perceived from school, home, and social media have significant effects on their knowledge, perceptions and attitudes related to bioenergy. Among 211 students as respondent (N), we found 70.62% believe that they understand well the concept about bioenergy, 5.21% believe that they understand it very well, and the rest believe that they do not understand it. This understanding reflects to their willingness to use a bioenergy in their daily life, in which 71.70% respondents agree to use bioenergy, 25.47% respondents can not decide, and only 2.83% do not want to use it. To find the relationship among the variables, a multiple regression was conducted. A statistical analysis showed that the model for knowledge as a function of attitudes and perception does not fit the data therefore this model is rejected. However, both model for attitudes as function of perception and knowledge, and also perception as function of attitudes and knowldeges fit the data hence the models are accepted. We report the direct evidence of impacts of the Coulomb interaction in a prototypical Weyl semimetal, MoTe2, that alter its bare bands in a wide range of energy and momentum. Our quasiparticle interference patterns measured using scanning tunneling microscopy are shown to match the joint density of states of quasiparticle energy bands including momentum-dependent self-energy corrections, while electronic energy bands based on the other simpler local approximations of the Coulomb interaction fail to explain neither the correct number of quasiparticle pockets nor shape of their dispersions observed in our spectrum. With this, we predict a transition between type-I and type-II Weyl fermions with doping and resolve its disparate quantum oscillation experiments, thus highlighting the critical roles of Coulomb interactions in layered Weyl semimetals. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Oil shale now becomes important in Indonesia as promising unconventional energy since the conventional oil is decreasing. This study may be classified as a reconnaissance in trying to evaluate oil shale in the Indragiri Hulu Regency, Indonesia that may become source rock of the future unconventional oil. A set of samples comprising thirty-four sediment outcrops have been collected. All samples were screened their richness by analysing their total organic carbon (TOC) and introduced to Rock-Eval pyrolysis apparatus to identify their maturity, type, and also richness. Out of the thirty-four samples, fourteen selected ones were analysed using gas chromatography (GC), sixteen samples for analysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and twenty samples for organic petrography. The sediments could be classified as very good to excellent for their organic richness, in the stage of immature to relatively mature, comprising a mixture between Type I and II kerogens which show oil prone. Petrographic analysis indicates that lamosite contained in the sediments belongs to Rundle type. The Rundle type lamosite that were mainly originated from Pediastrum organisms might indicate that the sediments were deposited in a lacustrine paleoenvironment, i.e. in a specific type of balanced fill basin. It is proven that the studied formation is promising to be source rock for the shale oil that could be exploration target in the near future time.

In the present study, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was incorporated with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles to prepare PVDF-TiO₂-PVP composite membrane for Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) rejection from protein contaminated wastewater. The preparation of PVDF-TiO₂-PVP composite membrane was conducted by a non-solvent phase inversion (NIPS) process with varying PVDF weight percentages ranging from 16 to 19 wt%. The polymer concentration plays a critical role in the formation of composite membranes that is commonly overlooked. The primary goal of this study is to examine how the concentration of polymers affects the process of membrane creation, the ensuing structure, and the properties of these membranes. Presently, there is a restricted comprehension concerning the impact of PVDF polymer concentration in the fabrication of membranes using the NIPS approach, particularly for PVDF-TiO₂-PVP composite membranes. FE-SEM analysis revealed the lowest skin layer thickness and the number of macro-void formations in a PVDF composite membrane were at 16 wt% PVDF, compared to composite membranes over higher PVDF concentrations from 17 to 19 wt%. There were only slight variations in the percentages of individual elements across all PVDF-TiO₂-PVP membranes, yet the values were identical for C, O, F, and Ti. The viscosity was lowest at 16 wt percent PVDF (576.5 MPa s) and greatest at 19 wt percent PVDF (2054.3 MPa s). It showed that 19%wt PVDF viscosity increased fourfold higher than 16%wt. As the concentration of PVDF was increased, a related decrease in the surface porosity of the membrane was observed. The highest hydrophobicity with the contact angle of 79.62° of the composite membranes were detected at 19 wt% of PVDF loading. The maximum water flux (265.43 L/m²h) and BSA flux (250.31 L/m²h) were obtained at 19 wt% of PVDF loading. The lowest PVDF concentration of 16

Developing transformative pathways for industry's compliance with international climate targets requires model-based insights into how supply- and demand-side measures affect industry, material cycles, global supply chains, socioeconomic activities, and service provisioning that support societal well-being. We review the recent literature modeling the industrial system in low energy and material demand futures, which mitigates environmental impacts without relying on risky future negative emissions and technological fixes. We identify 77 innovative studies drawing on nine distinct industry modeling traditions. We critically assess system definitions and scopes, biophysical and thermodynamic consistency, granularity and heterogeneity, and operationalization of demand and service provisioning. We find that combined supply- and demand-side measures could reduce current economy-wide material use by 56%, energy use by 40% to 60%, and greenhouse gas emissions by 70% to net zero. We call for strengthened interdisciplinary collaborations between industry modeling traditions and demand-side research to produce more insightful scenarios, and we discuss challenges and recommendations for this emerging field.

AUXILIARY SHIP HULL FORM DESIGN AND RESISTANCE PREDICTION

作者： FUNG, SC The author is a naval architect with the Preliminary Design Division of the Naval Sea Systems Command. Mr. Fung graduated from National Cheng Kung University in 1976 and Stevens Institute of Technology in 1977 from which he received his B.S. degree in naval architecture and marine engineering and M.S. degree in ocean engineering respectively. He started his career with M. Rosenblatt and Son in 1979 and became a senior naval architect with the Hull Form & Hydrodynamics Department in Designers and Planners in 1981. For the past ten years Mr. Fung has performed a variety of tasks in the area of feasibility study hydrodynamic design including advanced marine vehicles bulbous bows and hull form design for surface combatant and non-combatant ships. Currently he is a project naval architect for the T-AO twin skeg integrated hull design and the AE-36 Energy Enhancement Program. Mr. Fung is a member of ASE ASNE and SNAME. He received the John C. Niedermair A ward in 1984 and 1986 for the best paper presented at the ASE annual technical symposiums.

In this paper 154 auxiliary type monohull designs are analyzed for guidance on how to select the appropriate hull form parameters, particularly with regard to the effects of hull section shapes, sectional area and design waterline curves on ship resistance. This paper also discusses the resistance predictions based on (1) the statistical approach and (2) the use of series model test data (such as Taylor's standard series) and associated “worm curve factors” with the help of data management software.
