EFFECTS OF REFRACTIVE INDEX AND ASPECT RATIO ON THE PARTICLE IMAGES IN A LEVITATED DROPLET

A technique using droplets suspended by ultrasound has attracted attention as one of the containerless processing methods. While this can avoid contamination from the container, it is known that ultrasonic levitation creates flow fields inside and outside the droplet. For more precise droplet control, it is desirable to elucidate the internal flow of the droplet, and measurements of the internal flow have been performed using the particle image velocimetry (PIV). The aim of this study is to elucidate the internal flow field behavior by solving optical problems and improving the accuracy of velocity field measurements in levitated droplets. The fluid that is to be investigated is scattered with small tracer particles and illuminated by a laser to capture the flow on a created laser sheet. The curvature distortion is successfully visualized using the PIV approach toward distortion correction using calibration methods. The curvature distortion illustration was performed based on the refractive index and aspect ratio of the simulated droplet in acrylic materials. The fluid flow, affected by droplet curvature and refractive index, has been visualized for both levitated and simulated droplets. The experimental results showed that the droplet curvature can be distorted in two types such as radial and tangential distortions and increase as the refractive index and aspect ratio increases. © 2024 by Begell House, Inc.

The implementation of carbon capture and storage in the petrochemical industry is one of the means of *** research focuses on a comprehensive technical analysis of the deployment of post-combustion carbon capture and storage based on monoethanolamine absorption in the petrochemical *** olefin complex petrochemical industry in Tuban,Indonesia,is the basis for the analysis,which includes a steam cracker,polyethylene,polypropylene,and raw pyrolysis gasoline hydrotreating units,with capacities of 1000,940,600,and 570 kilotons/year,*** total energy consumption is about 16024.53 GJ/h,and the CO_(2) emissions are about 1.6 megatons/*** on these plant systems,comprehensive technical analyses of the implementation of carbon capture and storage in that industry were performed using Aspen HYSYS®simulation *** analysis was carried out to determine the total CO_(2) captured,energy intensity,monoethanolamine consumption,and net CO_(2) captured in various scenarios based on the number of absorber column stages,absorption pressure,and desorption *** CO_(2) storage site is about 100 km away and is transported by an onshore pipeline with a supercritical phase of CO_(2).The optimal net CO_(2) capture value is achieved by setting up a 50-stage absorber column with a pressure of 1 barg and a temperature of 110℃ at the top of the desorber column,resulting in a CO_(2) capture yield of 86.4%and an energy intensity of 12.6 GJ/ton CO_(2).Under these conditions,the net CO_(2) captured in the scenario based on gas power plants’electricity is 0.225 megatons/year,while in the scenario based on gas power plants incorporating 30%biomass electricity,it is 0.544 megatons/*** increased use of renewable energy in carbon capture and storage facilities,more net CO_(2) is *** study can be applied to various cases of post-combustion carbon capture and storage implementation in the industrial sector,especially in the

Automated Forearm Prosthesis Controlling Using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor

This paper describes the automation of a forearm prosthesis using the signal collected by a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor. The FBG sensor is applied to one subject's forearm to measure the deformation as a result of the index and middle fingers when moved individually. It is possible to control a one joint model prosthesis allied to a compliant hand mechanism through signal analyses. Each finger movement has its features, such as its amplitude, which opens the possibility of using those to control different parts of the prosthesis, joint rotation by the middle finger, and compliant hand movement by the index finger. This paper presents results regarding prosthesis assembling, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) communication latency between prosthesis and computer and tests with pre-acquired and processed FBG signal data. The prosthesis wrist rotation movement is related to the middle finger signal, and its compliant mechanism actuation is due to index finger signal. The communication between prosthesis and the computer had a mean latency of 140 ms and a standard deviation of 18 ms. The results demonstrate the potential for using the sensor system and automated prosthesis in other applications involving real-time forearm sensing, multi-finger signal analysis, and prosthetic movement. © 2023 SBMO/SBMag.

Selective Power Control in Grid-Connected AC Microgrids

The increasing penetration of nonlinear loads (NLLs) and distributed energy resources (DERs) in low-voltage grids poses challenges to power quality and grid hosting capacity (GHC). This article proposes a centralized multimode selective power control strategy for grid-connected ac microgrids (MGs) that does not require prior knowledge of MG parameters. The strategy enhances GHC and power quality across multiple MG nodes through coordinated control in two nonsimultaneous modes. In the centralized mode, a generalized power-based control algorithm enables selective harmonic/distortion power dispatch. This formulation improves disturbance rejection and accuracy in point of common coupling (PCC) power tracking. For the first time, feedback, feedforward, and disturbance decoupling actions are applied to distortion/harmonic power in MGs. In the decentralized mode, harmonic current compensation (HCC) is achieved without communication links, reducing data traffic via a selective voltage-detection-based approach. The proposed strategy enables (i) resistive load synthesis at the PCC to damp upstream grid resonances, (ii) sinusoidal current synthesis (SCS) for current quality enhancement and compliance with standards, and (iii) HCC based on voltage measurements to improve voltage quality at internal nodes. Comprehensive simulations evaluate reference tracking, disturbance rejection, grid short-circuit level effects, and mode transitions. Results show that in decentralized mode, PCC voltage THD improved from 10.65% to 1.09% under weak grids. In centralized mode, with SCS up to the 11th harmonic, PCC current THD was reduced from 61.18% to 3.42% under stiff grids. Experimental results confirm the feasibility of implementation in real MGs.

Global warming and climate change have become pressing environmental challenges, primarily caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, disrupting the natural balance of radiation and leading to rising global temperatures. The consequences of global warming include more frequent and severe heatwaves, changes in precipitation patterns, and increased risks of urban flooding. This research focuses on sustainable stormwater management as a strategy to mitigate urban flooding and adapt to climate change. The study area is the city of Güzelyurt in Northern Cyprus, characterized by a flat topography and limited stormwater infrastructure. The existing stormwater network is insufficient and prone to failures during rainfall events. The research compares the effectiveness and efficiency of two approaches: a traditional approach that involves resizing conduits, and a sustainable approach that implements Low-Impact Development (LID) strategies. LID strategies aim to mimic natural hydrological processes and include measures such as green infrastructure, permeable pavements, rainwater harvesting systems, and vegetative swales. By implementing these strategies, stormwater runoff can be controlled, mitigating the risk of flooding, improving water quality, promoting groundwater recharge, and reducing the demand for freshwater resources. The study utilizes the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) software to design the existing stormwater management network and simulate different scenarios. Through the evaluation of performance and analysis of results, the research results demonstrate that the implementation of LID strategies effectively doubled the existing rainfall handling capacity of the stormwater drainage system from 20 mm/h to 40 mm/h. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

A multi-scale analysis of elasto-plastic deformation and dislocation movement and accumulation of tricrystalline models during cyclic deformation was performed. The accumulation of dislocations in geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) and statistically stored dislocations (SSDs) was investigated in detail. Experimental observations have shown that fatigue life and fatigue crack propagation are also deteriorated when the material is subjected to overload or underload. However, in the microscopic and mesoscopic regions, where the effects of the crack tip shape change are not related to the size of the crack tip, a different phenomenon is essentially occurring. In this paper, the effects of overload and underload are investigated using a simple model without a crack. From the analysis results, it was found that the dislocation structure generated in the material subjected to overload or underload affects the subsequent deformation behavior. However, even though the absolute values are the same, the effects of overloading and underloading on the subsequent deformation are different, and underloading increases the non-uniformity of the subsequent deformation, which is on the dangerous side, while overloading decreases with increasing the number of repetitions. ©2022 The Society of Materials Science, Japan

With the growing demand for renewable-energy-powered hydrogen generation and the corresponding increase in plant capacity, individually controlling many electrolyzer stacks will be critical for increasing the plant's lifetime and efficiency. This paper introduces a rule-based controller framework targeting electrolyzer degradation to explore the opportunity space in multi-stack hydrogen plant control. A novel control-oriented degradation model is also presented in this work, which quantifies the impact of steady power input, fluctuating power input, and the number of startup/shutdown cycles on electrolyzer degradation. Using a wind power input signal, 13 controller configurations are tested on 5 MW hydrogen plants consisting of 2, 5, 10, and 25 stacks. These configurations are evaluated on their capability to mitigate electrolyzer degradation and efficiently produce hydrogen from the time-varying input power. The results show that multi-stack control for degradation can extend the plant's lifetime by more than a factor of 3 with minimal impact on instantaneous hydrogen production. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a study and development on the thermal mapping of a Three-phase Induction Motor for harsh environments application. These machines’ exceptional performance and precise speed control make them essential equipment in multiple industrial processes, such as Artificial Lift, which integrates with a multistage centrifugal pump to elevate fluids from the reservoirs to the surface. Increased motor speeds for higher production requirements can result in temperature rise, damaging the stator winding. Employing the Raman Distributed Temperature Sensing System (RDTS), we generate a comprehensive heat distribution map of the motor. ANSYS Motor-CAD was applied for computational simulations to perform steady-state thermal analysis, giving an overview of heat transfer among internal components and thermal limits for the instrumented motor. This preliminary study presents a series of experimental tests to evaluate the advantages of fiber optic temperature sensing in harsh environments, emphasizing its significance in improving electrical machines’ performance and reliability. © 2024 SPIE.

The carbon brushes and slip rings of a hydrogen-erator are the main components guiding the excitation current from the bridge to the rotor windings. The brushes' temperature are crucial to infer their operational condition and, the generator status. This work presents the temperature measurement of six Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) sensors installed in a 370 MVA electric generator brushes. The results show the sensors' capacity to monitor the brushes' temperature in accordance with the current flowing through them. Together with the sensors, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) technique was applied to the measured temperature to detect anomalous events regarding the current supplied to the rotor windings. The optical sensors combined with the AI could detect five events of abnormal current behaviour. One is presented in detail in this paper. This sensing system can be further applied to online fault detection using the temperature measured by the FBGs as a brush condition indicator and a generator operation and maintenance tool.
