Deep eutectic solvents:Green multi-task agents for sustainable super green hydrogen technologies

While reliance on renewable energy resources has become a reality, there is still a need to deploy greener and more sustainable methods in order to achieve sustainable development goals. Indeed, green hydrogen is currently believed to be a reliable solution for global warming and the pollution challenges arising from fossil fuels, making it the resilient fuel of the future. However, the sustainability of green hydrogen technologies is yet to be achieved. In this context, generation of green hydrogen with the aid of deep eutectic solvents(DESs) as green mixtures has been demonstrated as a promising research area. This systematic review article covers green hydrogen generation through water splitting and biomass fermentation when DESs are utilized within the generation process. It also discusses the incorporation of DESs in fuel cell technologies. DESs can play a variety of roles such as solvent, electrolyte, or precursor;colloidal suspension and reaction medium;galvanic replacement, shape-controlling, decoration, or extractive agent;finally oxidant. These roles are relevant to several methods of green hydrogen generation, including electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and fermentation. As such, it is of utmost importance to screen potential DES formulations and determine how they can function in and contribute throughout the green hydrogen mobility stages. The realization of super green hydrogen generation stands out as a pivotal milestone in our journey towards achieving a more sustainable form of development;DESs have great potential in making this milestone achievable. Overall, incorporating DESs in hydrogen generation constitutes a promising research area and offers potential scalability for green hydrogen production, storage,transport, and utilization.

Hybrid air conditioning and seawater desalination system assisted by solar energy: thermoeconomic investigation and optimization

The demand for freshwater has become progressively critical due to population growth and water scarcity. The current work investigates the energetic performance of a hybrid absorption refrigeration and desalination system. A parametric study for the system operating conditions has been performed to get the optimal conditions. Also, economic analysis and a multi-objective optimization method are used with the aim of maximizing the energy utilization factor of the system and minimizing total costs. The specific cost of desalinated water from the multi-objective optimization is calculated as (1.728 Cent/L) with the greatest energy utilization factor of (2.214). It turns out that, the system performs optimum at condensation and generation temperatures of 30 and 65 °C respectively, with resultant COP and GOR of 0.84 and 1.37. Using the optimum conditions, TRNSYS has been used to investigate the transient performance of the system for Marsa–Matrouh City in Egypt. The cooling and freshwater demands are 10 kW and 24 L/h. It was concluded that the input energy required to run the hybrid system decreased by about 65% less than that required for separate systems. With the assistance of solar energy, it became clear that the energy required was 60% less than the hybrid system as well. © The Author(s) 2024.

This research investigates the potential of blending complementary lard oil with rubber seed oil as feedstock for biodiesel *** seed oil,obtained through hexane extraction using the Soxhlet method,contains the major fatty acids of oleic acid(C_(18:1)),palmitic acid(C_(16:0)),linoleic acid(C_(18:2)),and stearic acid(C_(18:0)),while rubber seed oil primarily consists of linoleic acid(C_(18:2)),oleic acid(C_(18:1)),linolenic acid(C_(18:3)),palmitic acid(C_(16:0)),and stearic acid(C_(18:0)).The least acid value of lard oil(0.55 mg KOH/g)can benefit of reducing soap formation of rubber seed oil during transesterification process in biodiesel production due to its substantial-high acid value(16.28 mg KOH/g).Blending at ratios below 80:20 volume ratio produced biodiesel exceeding 85%,utilizing CaO as a *** oil demonstrated a higher reaction rate constant(11.88×10^(-3)min^(-1))than rubber seed oil(2.11×10^(-3)min^(-1)),indicating a significant difference in *** acid value and free fatty acids in rubber seed oil correlated with lower reaction *** a mixture ratio below 80:20 volume ratio optimized reaction rates during biodiesel *** obtained from blends below 80:20 volume ratio met ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 standards,demonstrating suitability for bio-auto *** drawbacks of using rubber seed oil as a raw material for biodiesel production are overcome by blending with lard oil,giving rise to expanding renewable energy options for rural communities,community enterprises,and large-scale biodiesel production.

Strawberry production is an important crop in the northern region of Thailand that is only available in winter. Theoretically, strawberries can be grown in plant factories that can control the climate conditions strawberries need. Generally, the cooling load from lighting accounts for almost 80% of the total heat load in the plant factory. To reduce the cost of using light energy and the heat load in plant factories, this study was conducted on cultivation methods in semi-closed greenhouses that utilize natural light during the day. Coolness is generated by solar energy during the day and stored in cooling energy storage that stored coolness is used during the night. The total cooling load for year-round strawberry cultivation in the greenhouse was about 814 GJ, consisting of the stages of strawberry floral initiation, flowering, and fruiting at 17%, 17%, and 66%, respectively. In addition, the payback period is around 14.16 - 16.29 years. © 2024 IEEE.

This research aims to develop the appropriate biorefinery process integrating anaerobic digestion(AD)and hydrothermal carbonization(HTC)to recover the highest energy from the pretreated elephant ***,the raw elephant dung was physically processed by washing with water to generate the liquid waste,i.e.,washing water(WW),and solid waste,i.e.,washed fiber(WF).The appropriate substrate-to-inoculum ratio(SIR)and the inoculum source of the AD of WW were determined and the HTC temperature of WF was also *** results indicated that the AD of WW with the SIR of 1:2 and anaerobically digested swine manure as the inoculum presented the highest methane and energy yields of 412.3±9.9 N mL/g VS added and 2,220.1±53.03 MJ/ton dry wt.,*** HTC of WF,the optimum condition was the hydrothermal temperature of 170℃ at the residence time of 60 *** highest hydrochar and energy yields were 76.8%±1.9%dry *** 12,067.0±452.1 MJ/ton dry wt.,***,this biorefinery process could simultaneously treat elephant campderived waste and produce clean energy.

EFFECTS OF REFRACTIVE INDEX AND ASPECT RATIO ON THE PARTICLE IMAGES IN A LEVITATED DROPLET

A technique using droplets suspended by ultrasound has attracted attention as one of the containerless processing methods. While this can avoid contamination from the container, it is known that ultrasonic levitation creates flow fields inside and outside the droplet. For more precise droplet control, it is desirable to elucidate the internal flow of the droplet, and measurements of the internal flow have been performed using the particle image velocimetry (PIV). The aim of this study is to elucidate the internal flow field behavior by solving optical problems and improving the accuracy of velocity field measurements in levitated droplets. The fluid that is to be investigated is scattered with small tracer particles and illuminated by a laser to capture the flow on a created laser sheet. The curvature distortion is successfully visualized using the PIV approach toward distortion correction using calibration methods. The curvature distortion illustration was performed based on the refractive index and aspect ratio of the simulated droplet in acrylic materials. The fluid flow, affected by droplet curvature and refractive index, has been visualized for both levitated and simulated droplets. The experimental results showed that the droplet curvature can be distorted in two types such as radial and tangential distortions and increase as the refractive index and aspect ratio increases. © 2024 by Begell House, Inc.

Improving energy content and hydrophobic nature of woody biomass can be pursued through torrefaction. This gives torrefied biomass with a low bulk density, potentially increasing storage and transport costs. To overcome this issue, densifying the torrefied biomass is necessary. However, poor binding of particles makes densification challenging without using a binder. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical characteristics and techno-economic aspects of torrefied rubberwood biomass (TRWB) when pelletized using various cassava-based binders at different blending ratios. The selected binders included cassava starch (CS), cassava pulp (CP), and cassava chip (CC). Each binder at 5%, 10%, or 15% (wt.) was mixed with TRWB and water before pelletizing using a flat die machine. The results revealed that pelletizing TRWB with different cassava-based binders at various blending ratios influenced the physicochemical characteristics of the TRWB pellets, particularly dimensions, bulk density, fuel and atomic ratios, and energy content. The TRWB pellets demonstrated energy densities in the range of 7.95–11.39 GJ/m3, and their mechanical durability and fine content fell within acceptable ranges. The TRWB pellets maintained their shape during 120 min of water soaking, with water absorption levels varying by binder dose. The pelletizing ability, material, and energy costs of TRWB pellets depend on binder type and dose. CP can be applied as a binder for pelletizing torrefied rubberwood biomass. However, the mechanical durability of the product needs to be above the user requirement or standard. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The demand for electronic devices that utilize lithium is steadily increasing in this rapidly advancing technological *** high-purity lithium in an environmentally friendly way is challenging by using commercialized ***,we propose the first fuel cell system for continuous lithium-ion extraction using a lithium superionic conductor membrane and advanced *** fuel cell system for extracting lithium-ion has demonstrated a twofold increase in the selectivity of Li^(+)/Na^(+)while producing *** data show that the fuel cell with a titania-coated electrode achieves 95%lithium-ion purity while generating 10.23 Wh of energy per gram of *** investigation revealed that using atomic layer deposition improved the electrode's uniformity,stability,and electrocatalytic *** 2000 cycles determined by cyclic voltammetry,the electrode preserved its stability.

A multidisciplinary approach to authentic learning experiences for nature-based solutions design: broadening the monkey cheeks

Students in a Landscape Architecture studio at Thammasat University and an Environmental engineering class at Asian Institute of technology joined to develop and assess Nature-based Solution designs for a pond/wetland system in peri-urban Bangkok. The Landscape Architecture class first developed their design visions and subsequently their designs were introduced to the engineering students through on-line presentations and collaborative on-site investigations. The engineering students used combinations of water quality sampling, static calculations, and application of a conceptual, dynamic urban hydrology model to assess design performance. The engineering students effectively incorporated some aspects of the architectural designs into their assessments, particularly those related to constructed wetlands for water quality improvement. Application of the dynamic model for water quantity assessments and provision of project cost estimates proved more challenging. Course evaluations indicated that students in both classes gained a better appreciation of the multidisciplinary process necessary for successful water resource planning, but also would prefer even greater interaction between the disciplines. Planned pedagogical improvements, including introduction of Steinitz’ Framework for Theory, are discussed. ©, Engineers Australia.
