Increased awareness of decarbonization and high fuel prices have induced a need for a wider deployment of alternative energy sources. Battery-powered electric trucks using an electrified road system offer a promising solution. This paper aims to evaluate the fuel consumption and environmental benefits of a 6 km road in Laem Chabang Port, Thailand, with a prototype system based on conductive charging from below. Battery capacity penetrations were designed for 1258 trucks traveling on weekdays. The annual electricity demand reached 1.608 TWh, and the flexible demand reached 1.65 TWh. The input was Thailand’s standard electricity, with one 50 kVA power substation per 0.0016 km2 and a 22 kV/400–230 V voltage system. Penetration required a capacity of 525 kWh. The findings indicate that fuel consumption was 592.43 TWh, and CO2 emissions were 51.63 MtCO2 annually. The electrified road system was evaluated with time series, fixed-effect, and tobit regressions. The time series analysis revealed that CO2 emissions would be nearly zero by 2060, with an annual 4% increase in Laem Chabang’s gross domestic product. A fixed-effect analysis signified the findings with Thailand’s recent potential, whereas the tobit regression represented the influence of possible changes. These regressions demonstrated that variations in revenue, oil resources, openness to the sea, and political stability significantly affected CO2 emissions, although there was no change in the implementation of the electrified road system. © 2024 by Begell House, Inc.

The main foundation structure of photovoltaic power generation facilities is a steel pile foundation. Soil corrosion rate is regarded as 0.02 mm/year regardless of the soil. However, it is considered that corrosion rates of each soil are difference. In this study, we estimated the soil corrosion environment by measuring the physical properties of soil and evaluated the charge transfer resistance of each soil environment by AC impedance method that regarded soil as electrolyte, in order to investigate the effect of soil particle size on soil corrosion. Glass beads of uniform sphere haven’t been packed close-packed structure, and porosity of soil with particle size distribution was nearly equal to regardless of particle size. But in case of the soil that included particles less than 50μm in a large quantity, porosity of the soil was increase. Porosity of soil that had similar particle size distribution was nearly equal regardless of water content. Therefore, it is suggested that the change of soil water content was replacement liquid phase and gas phase. The charge transfer resistance of soil corrosion decreased with decrease of gas phase ratio in soil. Therefore, it is suggested that the charge transfer resistance of soil corrosion might be estimated from the soil particle size distribution and water content. © 2023 Japan Society of Corrosion engineering. Smartphones have attracted attention in the structural health monitoring community due to their embedded multisensory platforms suitable for crowdsourcing innovation. Despite their advantages, smartphone sensors are originally designed for user utility rather than technical engineering applications (e.g. vibration analysis and modal identification). Sampling jitter is among those problems adversely influencing smartphone performance as a scientific device that can be used for characterising civil infrastructure dynamic characteristics. With inconsistencies in the sampling period due to jitter effects, the identified modal frequencies of a structure can deviate from the actual value, which is artificially introduced by smartphone clock errors. In this study, the authors formulate the statistical characteristics of the smartphone sampling period through kernel distribution and apply a digital reconstruction remedy to the sampling jitter problem. Through introductory simulations of a sine wave and physical implementations through shaking table tests equipped with smartphones, the efficiency of kernel distribution diagnosis and the signal-reconstruction remedy is presented. Following the simulation and laboratory applications, the proposed techniques are applied to vibration monitoring of a steel pedestrian bridge in terms of the auto power spectral density and short-time Fourier transform of single-output signals. The results show successful rehabilitation of accelerometer data from smartphones, removing jitter-induced errors to a significant extent and accordingly improving the identification accuracy currently in a single-output setting. © 2023 Emerald Publishing Limited: All rights reserved.

The numerical solution of compressible flows has become more prevalent than that of incompressible *** the help of the artificial compressibility approach,incompressible flows can be solved numerically using the same methods as compressible *** artificial compressibility scheme is thus widely used to numerically solve incompressible Navier-Stokes *** numerical method highly depends on its accuracy and speed of *** the artificial compressibility approach is utilized in several numerical simulations,the effect of the compressibility factor on the accuracy of results and convergence speed has not been investigated for nanofluid flows in previous ***,this paper assesses the effect of this factor on the convergence speed and accuracy of results for various types of *** improve the stability and convergence speed of time discretizations,the fifth-order Runge-Kutta method is applied.A computer program has been written in FORTRAN to solve the discretized equations in different Reynolds and Grashof numbers for various *** results demonstrate that the artificial compressibility factor has a noticeable effect on the accuracy and convergence rate of the *** optimum artificial compressibility is found to be between 1 and *** findings can be utilized to enhance the performance of commercial numerical simulation tools,including ANSYS and COMSOL.

Strawberry production is an important crop in the northern region of Thailand that is only available in winter. Theoretically, strawberries can be grown in plant factories that can control the climate conditions strawberries need. Generally, the cooling load from lighting accounts for almost 80% of the total heat load in the plant factory. To reduce the cost of using light energy and the heat load in plant factories, this study was conducted on cultivation methods in semi-closed greenhouses that utilize natural light during the day. Coolness is generated by solar energy during the day and stored in cooling energy storage that stored coolness is used during the night. The total cooling load for year-round strawberry cultivation in the greenhouse was about 814 GJ, consisting of the stages of strawberry floral initiation, flowering, and fruiting at 17%, 17%, and 66%, respectively. In addition, the payback period is around 14.16 - 16.29 years. © 2024 IEEE.

Solar-driven carbon dioxide reduction reaction(CO_(2)RR)provides an oppor tunity to produce value-added chemical feedstocks and ***,achieving efficient and stable photoelectrochemical(PEC)CO_(2)RR into selec tive products is challenging owing to the difficulties associated with the optical and the electrical configuration of PEC devices and electrocatalyst ***,we construct an efficient,concentrated sunlight-driven CO_(2)RR setup consisting of InGaP/GaAs/Ge triple-junction cell as a photoanode and oxide-derived Au(Ox-Au)as a cathode to perform the unassisted PEC CO_(2)*** one-sun illumination,a maximum operating current density of 11.5 mA cm^(-2) with an impressive Faradaic efficiency(FE)of~98%is achieved for carbon monoxide(CO)production,leading to a solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency of~15%.Under concentrated intensity of 10 sun,the photoanode records a maximum current density of~124 mAcm^(-2) and maintains~60%of FE for CO *** results demonstrate crucial advancements in usingⅢ-Ⅴbased photoanodes for concentrated PEC CO_(2)RR.

This research aims to develop the appropriate biorefinery process integrating anaerobic digestion(AD)and hydrothermal carbonization(HTC)to recover the highest energy from the pretreated elephant ***,the raw elephant dung was physically processed by washing with water to generate the liquid waste,i.e.,washing water(WW),and solid waste,i.e.,washed fiber(WF).The appropriate substrate-to-inoculum ratio(SIR)and the inoculum source of the AD of WW were determined and the HTC temperature of WF was also *** results indicated that the AD of WW with the SIR of 1:2 and anaerobically digested swine manure as the inoculum presented the highest methane and energy yields of 412.3±9.9 N mL/g VS added and 2,220.1±53.03 MJ/ton dry wt.,*** HTC of WF,the optimum condition was the hydrothermal temperature of 170℃ at the residence time of 60 *** highest hydrochar and energy yields were 76.8%±1.9%dry *** 12,067.0±452.1 MJ/ton dry wt.,***,this biorefinery process could simultaneously treat elephant campderived waste and produce clean energy.

Global warming and climate change have become pressing environmental challenges, primarily caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, disrupting the natural balance of radiation and leading to rising global temperatures. The consequences of global warming include more frequent and severe heatwaves, changes in precipitation patterns, and increased risks of urban flooding. This research focuses on sustainable stormwater management as a strategy to mitigate urban flooding and adapt to climate change. The study area is the city of Güzelyurt in Northern Cyprus, characterized by a flat topography and limited stormwater infrastructure. The existing stormwater network is insufficient and prone to failures during rainfall events. The research compares the effectiveness and efficiency of two approaches: a traditional approach that involves resizing conduits, and a sustainable approach that implements Low-Impact Development (LID) strategies. LID strategies aim to mimic natural hydrological processes and include measures such as green infrastructure, permeable pavements, rainwater harvesting systems, and vegetative swales. By implementing these strategies, stormwater runoff can be controlled, mitigating the risk of flooding, improving water quality, promoting groundwater recharge, and reducing the demand for freshwater resources. The study utilizes the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) software to design the existing stormwater management network and simulate different scenarios. Through the evaluation of performance and analysis of results, the research results demonstrate that the implementation of LID strategies effectively doubled the existing rainfall handling capacity of the stormwater drainage system from 20 mm/h to 40 mm/h. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Leaching behavior of sustainable concrete made with coal ash wastes as replacement of cement and sand

The coal-fired power plant fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA) are gradually used as alternative materials in the concrete. However, knowledge of the leaching characteristics of using both incinerator ashes in concrete production is lacking. This work aimed to evaluate the leaching behavior of the FA and BA used in concrete production by employing batch and tank leaching tests. The outcomes of both leaching tests showed that there was no considerable leaching of any trace elements to the environment, and it remains much lower than standard limitations for utilization as construction materials. The results of cumulative mass discharge showed that the slope of flux time for all elements was less than 0.4 and because of that, primary surface wash-off was the main discharge process of all the heavy metals. Strength test results revealed that there was not much difference between coal ash concrete (CAC) and the control mix at the initial age of curing time. Despite that, at a long period of curing time (180 days), the compressive strength of CAC containing 20% FA as cement replacement and 100% BA as fine aggregate replacement increased by 76% due to the pozzolanic reaction of BA and FA in comparison to the normal concrete, while, due to the high porosity of BA, the workability of CAC decreased by 50%. The outcomes of the current work revealed that the combined use of FA and BA can be counted as a promising alternative in the production of sustainable concrete for structural applications toward sustainable development.
