Translational research requires data at multiple scales of biological organization. Advancements in sequencing and multi-omics technologies have increased the availability of these data, but researchers face significant integration challenges. Knowledge graphs (KGs) are used to model complex phenomena, and methods exist to construct them automatically. However, tackling complex biomedical integration problems requires flexibility in the way knowledge is modeled. Moreover, existing KG construction methods provide robust tooling at the cost of fixed or limited choices among knowledge representation models. PheKnowLator (Phenotype Knowledge Translator) is a semantic ecosystem for automating the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) construction of ontologically grounded KGs with fully customizable knowledge representation. The ecosystem includes KG construction resources (e.g., data preparation APIs), analysis tools (e.g., SPARQL endpoints and abstraction algorithms), and benchmarks (e.g., prebuilt KGs and embeddings). We evaluated the ecosystem by systematically comparing it to existing open-source KG construction methods and by analyzing its computational performance when used to construct 12 large-scale KGs. Charge density waves (CDWs) involved with electronic and phononic subsystems simultaneously are a common quantum state in solid-state physics, especially in low-dimensional materials. However, CDW phase dynamics in various dimensions are yet to be studied, and their phase transition mechanism is currently moot. Here we show that using the distinct temperature evolution of orientation-dependent ultrafast electron and phonon dynamics, different dimensional CDW phases are verified in CuTe. When the temperature decreases, the shrinking of c-axis length accompanied with the appearance of interchain and interlayer interactions causes the quantum fluctuations (QF) of the CDW phase until 220 K. At T < 220 K, the CDWs on the different ab-planes are finally locked with each other in anti-phase to form a CDW phase along the c-axis. This study shows the dimension evolution of CDW phases in one CDW system and their stabilized mechanisms in different temperature regimes. © The Author(s) 2024.

With the increasing trend of population concentration and more frequent disaster events in cities, understanding the dynamics of urban inequalities of cities has become crucial for enabling faster and more efficient citizen responses with reduced risks. However, existing models often fail to effectively capture the complex and multifaceted nature of urban inequalities due to their inability to represent the weights and dynamic changes of the evaluation framework. To address this limitation, we propose a novel adaptive framework based on Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) that leverages a literature-driven meta-analysis to comprehensively assess the spatial dynamics of the Urban Inequality Index (UII). The framework involves a structured three-step process. First, we gather and screen 35, 819 in total scholarly literature within defined temporal scopes to acquire UII related to economic, educational, infrastructural, environmental, social, and health dimensions to ensure a broad and diverse dataset. Second, we employ BERT and a weights calculation algorithm to identify and weigh potential indicators, providing a contextualized understanding that surpasses conventional analytic techniques. Finally, we amalgamate and process data from assorted sources to formulate a panel dataset, facilitating the computation of the UII, followed by spatial analysis and visualization to expose underlying patterns and trends. We applied this framework to reveal significant spatial dynamics and trends in UII for the periods 2000–2010 and 2010–2020, using Shanghai as a case study. Our findings emphasize the increasing importance of environmental indicators in UII evaluation, reflecting broader global trends toward sustainability and resilience. These results underscore the need for continuous monitoring and adaptive policies to mitigate urban inequality and promote more equitable urban development effectively and also highlight the evolution of the urban inequa

Improving the Concentration of Students With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder: Electroencephalographic Analysis on the Effect of Learning Activity Interventions

This study examined whether the learning concentration of students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be improved through participation in one-on-one learning activities. A total of 13 students with ADHD or ASD were recruited to participate in various weekly one-on-one learning activities, in an effort to improve the concentration of students with special needs. Brainwave data were collected through electroencephalography and analyzed to explore students' concentration performance in different learning activities. To achieve the objective of this study, a multi-baseline design (ABAB), a type of single-subject design method, was employed. The experiment spanned 21 weeks, covering a fall and a spring semester: the first three weeks were defined as the 1st baseline phase, the 4th to 10th weeks as the 1st experimental phase, the 11th to 13th weeks as the 2nd baseline phase, and the 14th to 21th weeks as the 2nd experimental phase. The learning activities took place in the morning self-study period once a week, and the experiment was only suspended during two of the weeks because of school events. The purpose of the two baseline phases was to collect students' brainwave data. Students' brainwaves were measured for two minutes under two scenarios; first, while they were relaxed with eyes looking straight ahead; second, they were reading a passage. The purpose of the two experimental phases was to gradually enhance students' concentration by training them to perceive their own emotions through brainwave lamps. Initial results yielded different brainwave data for students with different types of disorders. After participating in the training on learning concentration, some students demonstrated improved concentration; however, after the 2nd experimental phase, students' concentration declined. Objectives: Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a major foodborne pathogen causing from acute gastroenteritis to bacteraemia, particularly in paediatric and elderly patients. Antimicrobial resistance of NTS, especially resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins, has emerged over the past decades. Methods: Thirteen NTS isolates resistant to ceftriaxone or cefotaxime were collected from a teaching hospital in Taipei, and another three from a tertiary hospital, in New Taipei City, Taiwan, from September 2018 to December 2019. Ten other archived isolates from 2000 to 2017 were also obtained. Complete genomes of the 26 isolates were obtained. Serovars, sequence types, resistomes, genetic relatedness, and sequence comparison of plasmids were analyzed. Results: Serogroups B, C2 and E were significantly associated with ampicillin resistance. Over 90% of these 26 isolates are susceptible to carbapenems and colistin. Genomic epidemiology of these isolates shows that bla_CMY-2-harbouring isolates in different serovars were prevalent over two decades, presumably resulting from highly mobile IncI1 plasmid harbouring bla_CMY-2. One type of the IncI1 plasmids contained a mobile element, IS26, which might be involved in the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance genes. Two emerging serovars, S. Goldcoast ST358 harbouring bla_CTX-M-55 on IncHI2 plasmids and S. Anatum ST64 harbouring bla_DHA-1 on IncA/C₂ plasmids persisted in Taiwan, possibly through the clonal spread. Integration of complete or partial plasmid sequences into host chromosomes or multiplications of the antimicrobial resistance genes also appears to be mediated by IS26, in the two emerging clones. Conclusion: The dynamic movement of cephalosporinase genes mediated by IS26 in NTS is of great concern. © 2023 The Authors

Effects of corrective insole on leg muscle activation and lower extremity alignment in rice farmers with pronated foot: a preliminary report

Background: Execution of strenuous activities in conjunction with slippery and viscous muddy working terrain in rice cultivation leads to a high prevalence of farmer musculoskeletal disorders and malalignments. Recommended intervention strategies originally designed for congenitally disabled individuals may also be applicable to farmers, including simple corrective wedges to reduce foot eversion. The objective of the present study was to conduct a preliminary investigation of the effects of corrective wedges on lower extremity muscle activity and alignment when subjects stood on flat rigid ground or muddy terrain, simulating typical work conditions encountered by the unique but populous Thai rice farming workforce. Methods: Nine healthy farmers with pronated feet were recruited to participate and wedges were custom fabricated for each farmer based on physical therapy assessment and use of rapid prototyping techniques. Participants were asked to stand barefoot or with wedges on the two surface types. Results: Results revealed foot pronation and knee valgus to improve (ranging, on average between 5.5 and 16.1 degrees) when participants were equipped with corrective wedges. The muscle activity of the peroneus longus and the tibialis anterior increased for muddy terrain, as compared with the rigid surface. In general, the wedges induced less tibialis anterior activity and greater peroneus longus activity, compared to when participants were standing barefoot. An elevation in evertor muscle activity may reflect stretching of the shortened muscle as a result of the reduced degree of foot pronation. Conclusions: Findings demonstrate potential benefits of corrective insole usage for farmers with pronated feet, including improved lower extremity alignment and invertor muscle activity reduction for both rigid and muddy terrains. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

Background: Early warning signs monitoring by service users with schizophrenia has shown promise in preventing relapse but the quality of evidence is low. We aimed to establish the feasibility of undertaking a definitive randomised controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of a blended digital intervention for relapse prevention in schizophrenia. Methods: This multicentre, feasibility, cluster randomised controlled trial aimed to compare Early signs Monitoring to Prevent relapse in psychosis and prOmote Well-being, Engagement, and Recovery (EMPOWER) with treatment as usual in community mental health services (CMHS) in Glasgow and Melbourne. CMHS were the unit of randomisation, selected on the basis of those that probably had five or more care coordinators willing to participate. Participants were eligible if they were older than 16 years, had a schizophrenia or related diagnosis confirmed via case records, were able to provide informed consent, had contact with CMHS, and had had a relapse within the previous 2 years. Participants were randomised within stratified clusters to EMPOWER or to continue their usual approach to care. EMPOWER blended a smartphone for active monitoring of early warning signs with peer support to promote self-management and clinical triage to promote access to relapse prevention. Main outcomes were feasibility, acceptability, usability, and safety, which was assessed through face-to-face interviews. App usage was assessed via the smartphone and self-report. Primary end point was 12 months. Participants, research assistants and other team members involved in delivering the intervention were not masked to treatment conditions. Assessment of relapse was done by an independent adjudication panel masked to randomisation group. The study is registered at ISRCTN (99559262).
