Eutectic conditions of carbon dioxide clathrate hydrate and sodium Chloride: Implications for zero liquid discharge seawater desalination

The eutectic temperature, pressure, and concentration conditions of carbon dioxide clathrate hydrate and sodium chloride dihydrate were measured to advance clathrate hydrate-based seawater desalination and salt production technology that enables seawater desalination through zero liquid discharge. The measured eutectic conditions were within the temperature range of 256.2 K ≤ Teu ≤ 263.5 K, the pressure range of 0.91 MPa ≤ peu ≤ 2.70 MPa, and the concentration range, expressed as the mass fraction of sodium chloride, of 0.235 ≤ wm,eu ≤ 0.242. These eutectic conditions correspond to the four-phase equilibrium of a saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution, carbon dioxide clathrate hydrate, carbon dioxide gas, and sodium chloride dihydrate, as well as the five-phase equilibrium of a saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution, carbon dioxide clathrate hydrate, carbon dioxide gas, liquid carbon dioxide, and sodium chloride dihydrate. Based on the measured eutectic conditions, implications for implementing clathrate hydrate-based seawater desalination and salt production were presented, including a conceptual design for a methodology involving reverse osmosis, multi-stage clathrate hydrate-based seawater desalination, and clathrate hydrate-based seawater desalination and salt production. © 2024 The Korean Society of Industrial and engineering Chemistry

Variable Length Multi-Objective Whale Optimization for Trust Aware Data Gathering in Wireless Sensor Network

Efficient data collection in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is crucial. While traditional approaches rely on stationary data sinks, the use of mobile sinks, like unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), has shown promise in enhancing data-gathering capabilities. However, existing methods often overlook the importance of trust, leaving the network susceptible to malicious or faulty nodes. To address this issue, we propose a novel trust-aware data-gathering algorithm, Variable Length Multi-Objective Whale Optimization Data Gathering (VLMOWO-DG). Our algorithm simultaneously optimizes energy consumption, delay, and trust while employing mobile sinks to collect data from sensor nodes. By considering trust as a key performance metric, we improve data reliability and security. The VLMOWO-DG algorithm introduces flexibility through variable-length solution representation and application-oriented operators, allowing for efficient exploration of the solution space. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm significantly outperforms established benchmarks, NSGA-II and NSGA-III, in terms of domination and hypervolume. This leads to a remarkable improvement of 200% in data gathering performance. © 2015 The Authors.

Adaptive Input Sampling: A Novel Approach for Efficient Object Detection in High Resolution Traffic Monitoring Images

Real-time traffic monitoring is crucial for efficient transportation management, but it poses significant computational challenges, particularly when dealing with high-resolution videos. Most modern traffic monitoring systems employ object detection models followed by object tracking models, which require processing every frame of the video footage to detect and track vehicles. However, even efficient object detection models are computationally expensive, making it difficult to process high-resolution videos in real-time. To address this challenge, we introduce an Adaptive Input Sampler (AIS) as a preprocessing module that selectively activates the object detector only when vehicles are present in the scene. The AIS targets the area of the frame where vehicles are detected and samples that area without compressing the sample, thereby reducing the computational load on the object detector. By doing so, the AIS enables significant computational savings, especially when fewor no vehicles are present in the monitored scene. Our experiments demonstrate that the AIS achieves 96.40% traffic counting accuracy and 95.60% classification accuracy, while reducing the data size for analysis by up to 79.00%. AIS presents a promising solution to optimize the volume of input data in traffic monitoring applications, improve computational efficiency, and speed up inference results. © 2013 IEEE.

Factors affecting the crop's water footprint to optimize the water use efficiency in the Gaza strip, Palestine

The agricultural sector in the Gaza Strip consumes more than 51% of the available water, leading to a massive deficit in the water budget. This study employs the water footprint concept as an innovative tool for effective water resources management. It examines the impact of several factors on nine basic crops (olives, citrus, grapes, wheat, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, squash, and cucumber) in the aspects of irrigation water consumption, climate parameters, crop patterns, virtual water trade, and achieving the best profits using the CROPWAT program and developing a linear programming model that combines economic benefit and water footprint. The best optimization was attained by changing crop pattern cultivation, as it achieved food security and optimized by 33% the use of green water. Also, the consumption of blue water was reduced by 29.4 million m3 (37%), as well as the productivity of water units increased to 18.5 $/m3 for eggplant, followed by potatoes at 13.9 $/m3, tomatoes at 9.25 $/m3, and cucumbers at 8.74 $/m3. The water footprint has proven its effectiveness in increasing water use efficiency and is considered an effective tool in planning for sustainable water management. © 2025 The Authors.

Developing a drought-heatwave cluster projection (DHCP) approach for water shortage areas: A case study in Northwest China

The study is focused on the ecological-fragile and water-shortage region in Northwest China (NWC). A drought-heatwave cluster projection (DHCP) approach is developed based on Stepwise Cluster Analysis (SCA) and multi-level factor analysis (MFA). A multi-model ensemble consisting of 5 global climate models (GCMs) under two shared socioeconomic pathways (i.e., SSPs) is used in the approach. It could investigate the spatiotemporal characteristics of heatwaves, drought, and compound drought-heatwave events (CDHEs) in NWC. A precise projection is given by SCA in 48 stations and four indicators of CDHEs (i.e., CEN, CEDU, CEI, and CEM) are thus calculated. Finally, the individual and interactive effects of uncertainties (i.e., period, SSP, and GCM) are analyzed by MFA. Results show the SCA method can effectively reproduce precise projections for temperature and precipitation for NWC. The frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves increase significantly under SSP5-8.5. Drought will ease and then intensify projected by all SSPs. The long-term intensification trend of drought is more pronounced under SSP5-8.5. CDHEs will increase, especially under SSP5-8.5 by the 2090s. These parameters will increase to 4.59 events, 2.86 days per event, 16.7°C per event, and 4.69 days, respectively. Higher increases are found in southeastern Qinghai, northwestern Gansu, and northern Xinjiang. Period affects CDHEs projection mostly. The GCM selection and its interaction with period also affect the projection significantly. DHCP provides a comprehensive analysis of heatwaves and droughts. It is equally applicable to other water shortage areas and is expected to help better manage water resources.

Effects of Nitrogen Fertilizer Types on the Uptake and Translocation of PFAS and Metabolomic Activities of Hydroponically Cultivated Lettuce (Lactuca sativa)

Increasing evidence is showing that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) replacing compounds are not as safe as they were assumed. This study investigated the plant uptake of two most prevalent PFAS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic (PFOS) and their replacing compounds, hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA or GenX) and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs) (6:2 Cl-PFAES) by hydroponically grown lettuce in the presence of different nitrogen fertilizers including ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4), potassium nitrate (KNO3), and urea in a growth chamber. Interestingly, (NH4)2SO4 significantly increased GenX uptake in lettuce shoots by ∼108% and KNO3 increased the uptake of PFOS and 6:2 Cl-PFAES by 267% and 395%, respectively, suggesting that the nitrogen fertilizer type has a marked impact on the plant uptake of PFAS and that this impact was PFAS-dependent. Our results also showed that (NH4)2SO4 generally resulted in higher PFAS root to shoot transfer than the other two types of nitrogen fertilizers. Metabolomic analysis revealed that amino acids, nucleotides, and antioxidants are the major metabolites that were either significantly increased or decreased in the lettuce shoots. These results showed that nitrogen fertilization management can have a significant impact on PFAS plant uptake and transport, and the impact depends on the types of nitrogen fertilizer and PFAS compounds. © 2025 The Authors. Enhanced peroxi-coagulation process for the treatment of anaerobically-treated palm oil mill effluent (POME)

This study investigated the effectiveness of the peroxi-coagulation (PC) process in removing dissolved organic impurities from palm oil mill effluent (POME). Key experimental parameters assessed in this study included wastewater pH, electrolysis duration, and the dosage of H2O2. After a five-hour treatment period, maximum breakdown of organic contaminants and removal of suspended particles were achieved, with around 86 % of soluble COD (SCOD), 91 % of total COD (TCOD), 99 % of true colour, and 84 % of turbidity were removed under optimal operating conditions (pH 3 and external dosing of 31.09 mM H2O2). These outcomes can be attributed to two removal mechanisms: the predominant Fenton oxidation reaction at low pH which promoted effective •OH generation from the dosed H2O2, and the simultaneous coagulation activity by the electrochemically produced Fe(OH)3 coagulant. This PC process was governed by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, which achieved a maximum kinetic rate of 0.5321 min−1 under ideal operating conditions. The estimated energy consumption for POME degradation ranged from 0.461 to 1.874 kWh per kg of COD reduced, indicating low electrical energy intake. These findings demonstrate the potential of the PC process as a pre- or post- treatment step that can enhance the removal of COD and pigmentation in integrated POME treatment systems. © 2025 The Korean Society of Industrial and engineering Chemistry

The sustainability of agricultural trade: The case of South Africa

Trade in agricultural products will be a crucial component of adaptive responses to global food insecurity and ensuring its sustainability is thus crucial. This is particularly important for resource scarce countries because agricultural trade allows for the virtual transfer of the resources required for production. This is important because agricultural production has significant resource requirements as well as substantial environmental, climatic and economic impacts. Assessing the sustainability of agricultural trade has proven to be a complex challenge due to a lack of frameworks available to comprehensively assess it and the ‘silo approach’ to resource management. To combat these problems new frameworks and analysis techniques which account for numerous sectors and impacts need to be developed. The objective of this paper was to provide and utilise such a framework to assess the sustainability of agricultural trade. To do this, the Water-Energy-Food Land-Economy-Climate framework was proposed. The framework was used in combination with a lifecycle analysis approach to assess the sustainability of agricultural trade in South Africa. Despite exporting 25% more agricultural products than they imported, the results showed that the production of South Africa's agricultural imports required 65% more water, 3% more energy, and 44% more land than exports. Further, imports generated 98% more CO₂ and 103% more PO₄ emissions than exports. Finally, South Africa was shown to generate 64% more economic value from their agricultural exports than their imports cost. Overall, the results show that according to the Water-Energy-Food Land-Economy-Climate framework used, and accounting for the South African resource context, the country had a sustainable agricultural trade mix. © 2025 The Authors
