A risk-based stochastic energy-water-carbon nexus analytical model to support provincial multi-system synergistic management – A case study of Shanxi, China

The synergistic management of energy-water‑carbon (EWC) nexus systems is crucial for achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Therefore, a non-deterministic interval chance-constrained fractional optimization model for EWC nexus system (ICCF-EWC) management has been developed in this study. This model is capable of handling uncertain parameters represented as stochastic probability distributions and interval values, providing an effective approach to addressing dual-objective optimization problems. Meanwhile, this model is expected to investigate the effect of water scarcity/carbon abatement pressure on the overall system, and potential synergistic abatement effects. A case study of Shanxi Province shows that over the next 30 years, the cumulative installed capacity for clean and renewable energy will exceed 65 %. The dominance of coal-fired electricity will be considerably diminished, with wind power overtaking coal/gas-fired power by around 30 %. Moreover, water scarcity and carbon mitigation pressure would promote the development of electricity conversion mode to clean energy rather than the large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology upgradation of thermal power. The results can help support low-carbon transition of power systems at a province-level in China and financial incentives related policy making to advance water conservation and carbon emission mitigation. The developed model can also be adapted to other energy resource-dependent regional power systems. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

In this paper, we develop a novel approach to achieve ultra-high resolution in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) through a photolithography patterning process. It is important to apply a solvent resistant electron transport layer (ETL) in the photolithography pattering of OLED because of solution coating process of photoresist on the ETL. Therefore, a solvent resistant ETL named 2,7-bis(4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-9,9 ′ -spirobi[fluorene] (SBF-Trz) was developed and employed as the ETL of OLEDs. The SBF-Trz demonstrated excellent solvent resistance during photolithography process and enabled device performances comparable to those of the conventional OLED without any photolithography process. It was found that the SBF-Trz ETL is appropriate as the ETL of the OLED patterned by photolithography due to good electron transport property, good stability, and good solvent resistance.

This study aims to increase the number of access users by limiting the sample size to 30 users while ensuring that every Optical Network Unit (ONU) receives data from the Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The proposed solution allows for the determination of power requirements at each ONU based on bus-star topologies, facilitating an increase in user capacity. The power received by each ONU is a critical parameter that system designers must consider when planning the implementation of Fiber to the Home (FTTH), as it impacts the output data in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Signal Quality Factor (QF) for each user. Various parameters were evaluated to ensure that the enhanced network improves scalability while adhering to standard specifications. These parameters included the Q-factor, BER, eye diagram, user count, and received power. The study employed slicing and duplication techniques, utilizing Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) for signal duplication and Wavelength Division Multiplexing for signal slicing. The simulations were conducted using a transmitter operating at a frequency of 1491 nm with a power output of 0 dBm, utilizing the latest version of OptiSystem 20 software. The results highlighted the system's capability to support a total of 73,728 users, meeting stringent performance criteria. Specifically, the system achieved a Q-factor greater than 6, indicating high signal quality, and a bit error rate (BER) lower than 1 × 10-9, ensuring reliable data transmission. For the sampled 30 users, the average Q factor was 8.1527, and the average BER was 5.3648 × 10^-11, with an output power level of -54.278 dBm. Despite an increase in users, the quality of the data supplied to clients remained unchanged. These outcomes underscore the robustness and efficiency of the design in delivering high-capacity, error-resilient optical communication. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

The rain in Colombia is the main cause of flooding. In 2008, more than one million Colombians had their homes affected by rainwater draining difficulties through the existent sewerage systems, causing floods in the urban area. Zone 2 of Aqueduct and Sewerage Company of Bogota and Sewerage Management Unit 251 are located in the center east of the city. After the evaluation and diagnosis of the storm sewer system and its existing networks, this region was identified as an area of high vulnerability due to flooding risks. The risk must be analyzed and determined due to floods suffered by the population during the rainy season. © 2022 IEEE.

Thermally enhanced pristine polyolefins: fundamentals, progress and prospective

The low thermal conductivity of polymers hinders their use in applications requiring high thermal conductivity such as electronic packaging, heat exchangers, and thermal management devices. Polyethylene and polypropylene (polyolefins) account for similar to 55% of the global thermoplastic production. Improving the thermal conductivity of this class of thermoplastics is important for many applications. This comprehensive review analyzes the advance son enhancing the thermal conductivity of pristine polyolefins. First, the mechanism of thermal transport in polymers and the key parameters that govern conductive heat transfer through polymers are discussed. Moreover, the progress in modeling and simulation ofthermal conductivity of polyolefins are analyzed. Furthermore, the different approaches toenhance the thermal conductivity of polyolefins through controlling their microstructure, crystallinity and chain orientation are presented. Finally, the key challenges and prospectivedirections for developing thermally enhanced pristine polyolefins are outlined. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

In full-scale units, the real application of nanoparticles photocatalytic degradation is still challenging due to the requirement of post separation for recovery of fine particles. This work investigated the removal efficiencies of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) using titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles coupling with graphene oxide (GO) sheets immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix via solution-casting and a heat-treatment process to achieve the TiO₂/GO/PVA nanocomposite film as a photocatalyst. The operative parameters were focused on initial solution pH value, GO concentration, and heat-treatment time, which subsequently determined the optimal indices for the catalyst film. The structure characterization of the Ti–O–C bond indicated that a strong interaction between GO and TiO₂ had been formed at the hydrolysis process while TiO₂/GO nanoparticles were chemically embedded in PVA matrix by the heat-treatment method. The photocatalytic degradation of PFOS and PFOA produced a nanocomposite film with 25 wt% TiO₂/GO that was treated at 120 °C for 3 h and exhibited a remarkable removal activity in acidic solution with a pH of 3. This condition efficiently degraded PFOS and PFOA by approximately 95.99 % and 96.89 %, respectively, through a photocatalytic reaction. This research presents a straightforward method to synthesize TiO₂/GO/PVA catalyst that influences persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under ultraviolet irradiation, which is of practical significance for environmental applications. © 2024 The Authors

The Magnetic Observatory of Tatuoca (TTB) was installed by Observatório Nacional (ON) in 1957, near Belém city in the state of Pará, Brazilian Amazon. Its history goes back to 1933, when a Danish mission used this location to collect data, due to its privileged position near the terrestrial equator. Between 1957 and 2007, TTB produced 18,000 magnetograms on paper using photographic variometers, and other associated documents like absolute value forms and yearbooks. Data was obtained manually from these graphs with rulers and grids, taking 24 average readings per day, that is, one per hour. In 2017, the Federal University of Pará (UFPA in the Portuguese acronym) and ON collaborated to rescue this physical archive. In 2022 UFPA took a step forward and proposed not only digitizing the documents but also developing an intelligent agent capable of reading and extracting the information of the curves with a resolution better than an hour, being this the central goal of the project. If the project succeeds, it will rescue 50 years of data imprisoned in paper, increasing measurement sensitivity far beyond what these sources used to give. This will also open the possibility of applying the same AI to similar documents in other observatories or disciplines like seismography. This article recaps the project, and the complex challenges faced in articulating Archival Science principles with AI and Geoscience. © 2022 IEEE.

HADOKEN: An Open-Source Software Package for Predicting Electron Confinement Effects in Various Nanowire Geometries and Configurations

We present an open-source software package, HADOKEN (High-level Algorithms to Design, Optimize, and Keep Electrons in Nanowires), for predicting electron confinement/localization effects in nanowires with various geometries, arbitrary number of concentric shell layers, doping densities, and external boundary conditions. The HADOKEN code is written in the MATLAB programming environments to aid in its readability and general accessibility to both users and practitioners. We provide several examples and outputs on a variety of different nanowire geometries, boundary conditions, and doping densities to demonstrate the capabilities of the HADOKEN software package. As such, the use of this predictive and versatile tool by both experimentalists and theorists could lead to further advances in both understanding and tailoring electron confinement effects in these nanosystems. © 2022, CC BY.
