To mitigate floods and droughts in Thailand, the reservoir operations need accurate and reliable hydro-parameter information, e.g., inflow, to support decision making. In this paper, we explore and develop the predictive models for predicting the next-day inflow of the Bhumibol Dam, one of the major reservoirs of Thailand. We applied the machine learning techniques including decision tree, support vector regression, random forest, and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). Daily reservoir and climate Data from 2000 to 2021 were used in the analysis. After the series of experiments of model development, we finalize the model with the random forest algorithm having the best performance of MAE=4.232, MSE=83.823, and R2=0.867. However, we believe that the models and the feature sets can be further explored and developed to achieve the better accuracy. As a result, we could practically incorporate the inflow prediction model to aid decision making in the reservoir operation. © 2022 IEEE.

The Transportation Performance Index (TPI) provides a snapshot of the performance of transportation infrastructure in a specific year based on indicators reflecting supply, quality of service and utilization. To better understand how the TPI changes with investment, regional long range transportation plans were reviewed and the impact of the proposed investments estimated for 2035. Without investment, the performance of transportation infrastructure, as measured by the TPI, declines significantly from 2011. With investment the TPI is shown to increase significantly, underscoring the importance of these strategic investments. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

High precision of hydrological prediction is crucial for real–time operation of flood and drought risk mitigation and strategic planning. This study assessed the predictive performances of three Machine Learning (ML) algorithms;XGBoost, Random Forest (RF), and Multi–Layer Neural Networks (MLNNs) for water level prediction with a focus on low and high water levels. The one–day and one–week water level prediction models for six key gauged stations along the Chao Phraya River and its major tributaries were accordingly developed. Selecting the combination of input features was carried out and structured in the prediction model at all gauged stations based on the physical river–reservoir system using past water level, rainfall, controlled reservoir outflow, and upstream discharges with different travel times. The statistical evaluation indicated that both XGBoost and RF, the tree–based ML models, with rainfall input robustly outperformed than MLNNs, as it strongly achieved higher R2 from 0.957 to 0.999 for model training and from 0.743 to 0.995 for model testing and lower MAE, MSE, and RMSE values for all prediction scenarios. Among these three ML algorithms applied for daily prediction, RF demonstrated the superior performance for low water level prediction exhibiting the smallest percentage error of overestimating lying between +0.0088% and +0.9380%. XGBoost, RF, and MLNNs, demonstrated acceptable performance level for high water level prediction as it shows small percentage error of both overestimating and underestimating lying between –2.2696% and +1.1587%. Additionally, it can capture the entire testing dataset with high precision than weekly model. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Coarse aerosol particles containing chloride in tropical forests are significant for understanding biogeochemical cycles and atmospheric processes, with implications for environmental health and climate change mitigation. This study explored the sources of super-coarse carbonaceous aerosol particles containing chloride in a tropical savanna climate. Aerosol samples were collected from an agro-forest site in Thailand during the dry season and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. By examining the morphology and elemental compositions of individual aerosol particles, along with employing Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) and backward trajectory analysis, potential sources were identified. The findings revealed two primary sources for the super-coarse aerosol particles: a mixture of biomass burning smoke and inorganic salts (likely from saline soil and sea salt), as well as halophilic fungal spores. FTIR analysis indicated the presence of compounds linked to biomass burning and clay minerals, influenced by prevailing northeast and southeast winds. Recommendations for future research include continued monitoring, correlation with meteorological parameters, and the application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for more detailed visualization and confirmation of aerosol sources. © The Author(s) 2024.

Waste lignin (WL) from the pulp mill and paper was studied for its potential application to prepare the nanoporous carbon with high porosity via carbonization assisted acid activation. The effect of acid activation such as HNO3, HCl, H2SO4, and H3PO4 on lignin transformation to nanoporous carbon investigated. The physicochemical properties of nanoporous carbon were comprehensively characterized through N2 sorption, Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), respectively. N2 sorption revealed that the condition using 5% vol of phosphoric acid activation at carbonization temperature of 700°C for 2 h exhibited the highly porous structure of carbon nanoparticles with a total pore volume of 0.035 cm3 /g. With the properly selecting process variables of waste lignin development could be producing high porosity nanoporous carbon. © 2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

Waste lignin (WL) obtained from paper mills, was studied for its potential application in preparing carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) with high porosity. This was done by impregnation of 0, 5, 10 and 20% concentrations of phosphoric acid under various carbonization temperatures (600, 700, 800 and 900°C). The physicochemical properties of CNPs were characterized through nitrogen sorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Nitrogen sorption revealed that the condition using 10% concentration of phosphoric acid treatment at a carbonization temperature of 700°C formed carbon nanoparticles with a highly porous structure (Surface area 27.65 m2 /g and pore volume 0.07 cm3 /g). This study encompasses investigation of treatment of pistachio processing industry wastewaters in a batch reactor under aerobic conditions, calculation of kinetic parameters and comparison of different inhibition models. The mixed microorganism culture used in the study was adapted to pistachio processing industry wastewaters for nearly one month and then concentrations from 50-1000 mg L-1 of pistachio processing industry wastewaters were added to the medium and treatment was investigated in batch experiments. The Andrews, Han-Levenspiel, Luong and Aiba biokinetic equations were chosen for the correlations between the concentration of pistachio processing industry wastewaters and specific growth rates, and the kinetic parameters in these biokinetic equations were calculated. The maximum specific growh rate, semi-saturated constant and inhibition constant parameters, included in the Aiba biokinetic equation providing best fit among the other equations, had values calculated as 0.25 h-1, 19 mg L-1, and 516 mg L-1, respectively. Points of dispensing (PODs) are locations that distribute medicine to populations during a public health biological event. Underestimated demand may lead to insufficient parking capacity and network congestion, causing distribution delays. A customized travel demand model provided a preliminary analysis of traffic impacts, using measures of effectiveness for the transportation network and POD operations. The case study modeled an aerosolized anthrax release in Wilmington, Delaware. Results indicated that although PODs did not significantly impact the surrounding network, localized congestion, and large delays may occur at PODs depending on patient assignment, parking availability, and traffic management. Analysis underscored the need to model interactions between POD operations and the transportation network, revealed gaps in understanding of how patients will respond to biological events, and highlighted the need for parking management and mechanisms for sharing information about PODs. The objective of this paper is to address these issues through new and existing technologies. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

A collaborative course called Global Awareness for Technology Implementation was conducted by the Faculty of engineering, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. The objective of this course was to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, perspectives, and experiences between Thai and Japanese students through project work, using an engineering design approach and the design thinking process to create innovation relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the class, experts shared their knowledge and experiences with the students. The students then worked on their respective projects to develop solution concepts using the design thinking process. The proposed ideas include the application for English class, smart water quality checker, hydrogen-based energy system for rural area, reduced wasted fashion solution, and auto waste sorting machine. Finally, this study concluded with a summary of the results and findings on the empathy process in the chosen SDGs, and of the commonalities and differences between Thailand and Japan in terms of ideation.
