Zeolite micropattern created from structurally similar hydrophobic Sil-1 and hydrophilic ZSM-5 zeolites, and tested for the immobilization of fluorescein isothiocyanate conjugate bovine serum albumin (BSA-FITC), biotin conjugate bovine serum albumin (Biotin-BSA), Hochest 33342 and rhodamine conjugate α- bungatoxin, were preferentially deposited onto hydrophobic ZSM-5 patterns regardless of the pattern geometry. Being inorganic, the zeolite micropattern does not deteriorate with time and can be readily reused by simply burning away the deposited chemicals and biomolecules. This suggests that compositional micropattern of zeolite could be used to create high resolution array of biomolecules on flat substrate.

The NANOOS-Pilot project (Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems) is an ongoing effort to develop coastal ocean observing assets for the integrated observation of the estuaries and shorelines of the Pacific Northwest. The project is actively building nowcast and predictive capabilities for this environment, as well as interactive access to archival data, real-time data, and selected forecasts. In addition to the potential benefits accrued to the many sectors that depend upon the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest, there are a number of education opportunities related to ocean observatories involving undergraduate and graduate institutions, K-12 schools and adult literacy programs. In this work, we describe some ocean technology applications of the NANOOS-Pilot and focus on the educational use of the system in a senior-level Civil engineering course on Coastal Infrastructure. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

His active duty assignments included the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations Director of Surface Warfare as Section Head for Surface Combatant Maintenance and Modernization Program Executive Office Expeditionary Warfare as Assistant Project Manager for the (TAKE 1)Class Program and as Deputy Director Environmental Programs Division at Naval Sea Systems Command. He is a 1993 graduate of the Naval Construction and Engineering Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a Naval Engineers Degree and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Since 1995 he has authored thirteen published technical papers dealing with environmental issues. CDR Markle is the recipient of Fiscal Year 2001 Individual Environmental Quality Awards and Environmental Excellence in Weapon System Acquisition Team Awards from Naval Sea Systems Command Chief of Naval Operations Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of Defense and the 2001 ASNE “Jimmie Hamilton” award. He is a Professional Engineer registered in the State of New York and Commonwealth of Virginia. He serves as the Chair of the Joint ASNE/SNAME Committee on Environmental Engineering and also as Chair of ASTM Ships and Marine Technology Marine Environmental Protection Subcommittee (F25.06).

Regulations governing the discharge of sewage from ships have been in force since the early 1970's. In response, the marine industry has developed ever more complex systems and processes for managing these wastes. The first compliance method involved holding wastes until they could be legally discharged;as technology advanced, treatment systems were developed and installed to enable discharge within regulated waters. As the size and number of ships as increased with maturation of the ocean tourism business, more restrictive regulations have been enacted to minimize the impact on sensitive waters. The trend is toward increasing regulation of both sewage and graywater. The most recent action occurred on 12 October 2005 when the Governor of California signed into law Senate Bill 771 regulating most ship liquid discharges within state waters. This paper describes the development of an innovative advanced wastewater treatment technology, based on advanced oxidation, bearing in mind the lessons learned from systems developed by industry over the past thirty years.

The Collaborative Large-scale engineering Analysis Network for environmental Research (CLEANER) Project Office has been established with funding from the National science Foundation (NSF) to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a coalition of 11 other institutions. The project office is coordinating the creation of a strategic plan consisting of research, cyberinfrastructure, and education plans that set forth a roadmap for the collaborative engineering analysis network for the study of environmental problems. This report will be completed by July 2007 and requires input from K-12 educators, administrators and other stakeholders in K-12 education. This paper describes the CLEANER project, provides an example of the CLEANER Education Committee's vision for the K-12 area and lists contacts for further information. The intention of this paper is to elicit input from the K-12 engineering education community, including K-12 educators, on how the CLEANER Education Plan could better meet the future needs of K-12 students and educators © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

Various techniques of autostereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) display for displaying real 3D information have been investigated in recent years. We have performed research and application of integral videography (IV), which is an animated display technique based on the principle of integral photography (IP). Although IV and IP are ideal ways to display 3D images, their spatial viewing resolution and high-speed image rendering algorithm must be improved. The pixel pitch of the display and the lens pitch are the main factors affecting IV image quality. We improved the image quality by increasing the number and density of the pixels. Parallel image processing and displaying method were also developed for animated IV imaging. We have created a scalable high-resolution image using multiple projection and project it onto a small screen to achieve high-density pixels using long-focal-length projection optics. Furthermore, an image calibration method was developed for geometrical correction and color modulation to generate seamless IV images. We evaluated the developed device by displaying an X-ray computed tomography (CT) image. Measurement of the geometrical accuracy of the reproduced IV images demonstrated that the spatial resolution of the display system matched that by theoretical analysis. Experimental results showed that our technique is very effective in obtaining 3D animated images with practical spatial resolution. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We have utilized ZnCl 2 -dimethylsulfone (DMSO 2 ) as the electrolyte with added CoCl 2 and GdCl 3 for electrodepositing a magnetic film. Moreover, the controlled potential method was utilized for film deposition. The voltammogram revealed that the reduction of Co-Zn-Gd film can be achieved by applying a potential in the range from -0.1 to -0.5 volts. From the results of AGM analyses, a high squareness value (Mr/Ms = 0.923) of the Co-Zn-Gd film at -0.3 volt was observed. In previous research, perpendicular magnetic materials have been applied to magnetic optic (MO) media, magnetic recording heads, and perpendicular magnetic tunneling junction (pMTJ). However, preparation of magnetic materials is normally carried out in high vacuum systems. Since electrodeposition methods for preparation of magnetic films have several advantages, such as simple equipment, ease of operation and relatively large area, the use of electrodeposition has great potential for preparing films.

AIRPET, an Asian regional air pollution research network, which is coordinated by the Asian Institute of Technology, involves six cities: Bandung, Bangkok, Beijing, Chennai, Manila, and Hanoi. One of the objectives of the network is to provide a comprehensive assessment of particulate matter (PM) air quality though monitoring and receptor modeling tools jointly by six research teams in these cities. The results within the scope of this monitoring and modeling objective in phase 1 (2001-2003) were presented. In total, the network collected over 2500 PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ samples from characteristic urban sites. In all these cities the levels of PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 were found high especially during the dry season which the frequently exceeded the EPA standard for PM₁₀ and PM_2.5, especially at the traffic sites. Traffic had the highest PM_2.5 contribution in most cities with the exceptional high share (> 70%) in Manila. Traffic and coal combustion had high contribution in Beijing while NaNO₃ was found high in Hanoi. The engineering Games at UnicenP began in 1999 and, in 2004, the 6 th edition had the participation of approximately 600 students, freshmen and sophomore, from the Civil, Computer, Electric and Mechanical engineering programs at Centro Universitário Positivo. In the last two editions of the games there has been a change in the format, with the students now being made responsible for the acquisition of the materials to be employed in the games. This is now possible due to advanced announcement of team composition, which gives the students enough time to contact fellow team members and get organized prior to engineering Games day. The new format has helped improve team organization, and also made the games easier to set up, since more time can be devoted by the faculty to task creation and evaluation as opposed to the former assemblage of kits of materials to be handed to the teams. © 2005 IEEE.

The potential for an Ecological Treatment System (ETS) to improve water quality of highly concentrated dairy wastewater is supported by the effective treatment of municipal wastewater by previous ecological systems such as Living Machines™, algal scrubbers, and treatment wetlands. This study utilized a lab-scale ETS that consisted of six components;three aerated vegetative tanks, one anaerobic tank, one clarifier, and one wetland mesocosm, resulting in a total water volume of 878 L. This system treated dairy wastewater added in increments of 7.5, 15, and 22.5 L every 72 hours. The influent CBOD5 of the waste averaged 1490.46 mg L-1. Regardless of loading rate, the system consistently reduced CBOD5 concentrations more than 99%. Percent reductions for the following variables were not affected by the different loading rates;TSS (96.5%), PC (99.5%), POC (99.2%), and TN (87.1%). However, there was a significant difference (R-ANOVA, p-value 4-N, PO4-P, and TP. Reduction rates greater than 99% were measured for NH4-N, TP, and TSS for all loading rates. However, TSS and NH4-N did not meet effluent discharge goals of 10 mg L-1 and 0.1 mg L-1, respectively, at loading rates of 22.5 L, and TP did not meet the effluent discharge goal of 1 mg L-1 for any of the loading rates. The effectiveness of the system to remove NO 3-N was limited by the bio-availability of carbon. At the lowest loading rate (7.5 L), there were no reductions in concentrations of NO 3-N. However, at the highest loading rate (22.5 L) the NO 3-N was reduced to zero during the first 3 hours of treatment. The dependence of nitrate reduction on the bio-availability of carbon was supported by an inverse relationship (r2=0.77) between PC and nitrate at the highest loading rate.
