This work investigated the decolorization of dye wastewater using an ozonation membrane contactor. The hydrophobicity of a PVDF membrane was developed by applying novel plasma activation followed by grafting with methyltrichloroalkylsilane (PVDF–MTCS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H–perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PVDF–FAS–C8) at different grafting times and grafting agent concentrations. After hydrophobic membrane modifications, the ozonation membrane performances were improved. The ozone flux of PVDF–FAS–C8 was higher and more stable, maintaining 88% of the initial flux after 20 h, compared to 79% and 53% for the PVDF-MTCS and original membranes, respectively. After 90 mins, COD removals of Direct Blue 71 (DB 71) and Reactive Red 239 (RR 239) by the ozonation membrane contactor using PVDF–FAS–C8 were 62.5% and 67.5%, and TOC removals were 20% and 23%, respectively, with almost complete decolorization. The releases of sulfate and nitrate ions confirmed the dye mineralization. By applying a PVDF –FAS-C8 membrane, energy consumption was 33.2% lower than when using the original membrane. The findings exhibited that the performance of ozonation membrane contactor improved was due to the role of the functionality on modified PVDF membranes. The PVDF-MTCS membrane had a higher silicon composition and better surface roughness than the PVDF-FAS-C8 membrane. The water contact angle (WCA) of the PVDF-MTCS membrane was higher than that of the PVDF-FAS-C8 membrane, increasing from 74.7 o (original) to 126.0 o and 112.7 o , respectively, after 6 h of grafting, leading to reduced membrane wetting. © 2022, The Authors. Activated sludge process is one of the wastewater treatment method that is applied for many wastewater types including painting process wastewater of automotive industry. This wastewater is well-known to have high heavy metals concentration which could deteriorate water environment if appropriate performance of the wastewater treatment could not be achieved. In this study, we monitored microbial community diversity in a Painting Biological Treatment (PBT) system. We applied a combination of cultivation and genotypic biological methods based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis to identify the diversity of active microbial community. The results showed that active microbes that could grow in this activated sludge system were dominated by Gram-negative bacteria. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis, it was revealed that their microbial diversity has close association with Bacterium strain E286, Isosphaera pallida, Lycinibacillus fusiformis, Microbacterium sp., Orchobactrum sp., Pseudomonas guariconensis, Pseudomonas sp. strain MR84, Pseudomonas sp. MC 54, Serpens sp., Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila, and Xylella fastidiosa with similarity of 86 - 99%. This findings reflects that microbial community in a Painting Biological Treatment (PBT) system using activated sludge process could adapt with xenobiotics in the wastewater and has a wide range of diversity indicating a complex metabolism mechanism in the treatment process. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

Precious metal (e.g., gold and silver) content is a key-driven factor to encourage the electronic waste (E-waste) recycling industry. A part of E-waste composition, random access memory (RAM) contained in printed circuit boards (PCBs) has been collected for recovering of these precious metals. In the gold extraction process, the cyanide has been widely used as a leaching agent because of its lower cost. However, cyanide-contaminated wastewater has highly toxic and poses a severe threat to human health and surroundings when treated improperly. Aqua regia, an alternative gold leaching agent, has been proposed because it is less toxic than cyanide. This study, the aqua regia leaching method was conducted to recover the gold from discarded RAM. The effects of pulp density (solid to liquid ratio) between RAM and aqua regia, leaching time, and temperature on the gold recovery were investigated. The results show that the highest extraction yield of gold was 746.8 ppm at the solid to liquid ratio of 1 g RAM to 6 mL aqua regia, at 75 ºC, and 4 hours. The findings from this study provide the understanding for selecting the parameter affecting the gold extraction efficiency, leading to the improvement of recycling technologies and environment-friendly processes for further precious metal recovery. © 15th International Symposium on East Asian Resources Recycling Technology, EARTH 2019. All-solid-state electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices with prolonged lifetime, operational stability, and mechanical flexibility can be a promising route to powering up wearable electronics. However, conventional EES devices have been often hindered by a gradual decrease in energy capacity due to low ionic conducting electrolytes, non-suitable electrode materials, or poor electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Herein, we propose a harmonization of the molecular-level tailoring of ionic gel polymer electrolyte (IGPE) and graphene-based electrodes, significantly improving and sustaining the electrochemical performance (11.9 μWh cm-2) of EES microsupercapacitor (MSC) devices. Our optimized MSC device based on ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (EMIM-FSI) and interdigitated reduced-graphene oxide (rGO) electrode array maintains 99 % of the initial electrochemical capacity even after 20,000 cycles, also demonstrating the excellent mechanical flexibility (bending radius up to 4 mm) and environmental stability (>30 days) of the MSC-based array. Molecular-level simulation and spectroscopic atomic analysis revealed noticeably lower residual ionic liquid (IL) molecules of EMIM-FSI, compared to EMIM-trifluoromethyl FSI, between the graphene-based layers of electrodes during the charge/discharge cycles. Therefore, our optimization strategy and findings will pave the way to accomplish next-generation of all-solid-state EES devices with ultra-high operational stability, powering wearable electronics. © 2023, The Authors. Microplastics, interacting with drought stress, have become threat to crops by altering soil environment. Currently, the effect of combined microplastic and drought stress on crop growth remain poorly understood. In this work, the mechanism of multi-stress responses was investigated under the exposure of polvinylchloride microplastic (PV) and drought (D) individually and in combination (DPV) on rice varieties Hanyou73 and Q280 through proteomics and metabolomic analysis. All treatments negatively affect chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activities, rice grain composition, metabolome and proteomic profiling of both rice varieties. Full rice grain yield was decreased under all treatments except PV treatment in which it was increased in both rice varieties. DPV treatment shows the lowest grain yield and more adverse effects on metabolome by affecting glycerophospholipid metabolism, tryptophan metabolism and alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism. Soluble sugar contents were decreased in H73 but in Q280 increased by 159 % under DPV and 123 % in PV treatment, compared to their control group. The results from metabolomics illustrate that glycerophospholipid metabolism is commonly altered in both rice types under all treatments. PV and drought alone and in combination induce extensive alterations in proteomics of rice leaves especially impacting proteins related to binding, translation and photosynthetic process. The results reveal that PV and DPV treatments highly distort the abundance of metabolites and proteins in both rice types, demonstrating that microplastic toxicity effects on rice plants become more severe when combined with drought stress. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

An urbanization monitoring dataset for world cultural heritage in the Belt and Road region

World cultural heritage refers to properties recognized as having historical, social, and anthropological value. Global urbanization has changed the land cover, land use, transportation, landscape, and local environment in cities, and thus exposed World Heritage sites to risks induced by direct or indirect damaging factors. In this paper, an urbanization intensity index (UII) was developed to quantitatively measure urban dynamics in the vicinity of World Heritage sites. This index is based on three global Earth observation datasets, including a global human settlement layer, a global population grid product, and a global nighttime light imagery. Large UII values represent high urbanization levels and intensive human activities in the study area and vice versa. The assessment results show that the mean UII value at 79 world cultural heritage sites in the Belt and Road region increased from 0.26 in 2000 to 0.29 in 2015. The heritage sites were then classified into four types based on the change rates of UIIs. A total of seven heritage sites were identified as exposed to risks due to urban sprawl and infrastructure expansion. The UII dataset can be combined with UNESCO’s periodic reports and site-specific data to provide valuable information for international communities to develop heritage preservation policies.

The water treatment depends exclusively on the identification of residues containing toxic chemical elements accumulated in NPs (nanoparticles), and ultrafine particles sourced from waste piles located at old, abandoned sulfuric acid factories containing phosphogypsum requires global attention. The general objective of this study is to quantify and analyze the hazardous chemical elements present in the leachate of waste from deactivated sulfuric acid factories, coupled in NPs and ultrafine particles, in the port region of the city of Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Samples were collected in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Corresponding images from the Sentinel-3B OLCI satellite, taken in the same general vicinity, detected the levels of absorption coefficient of Detritus and Gelbstoff (ADG443_NN) in 443 m−1, chlorophyll-a (CHL_NN (m−3)), and total suspended matter (TSM_NN (g m−3) at 72 points on the marine coast of the port region. The results of inductively coupled plasma atomic-emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) demonstrate that the leaching occurring in waste piles at the port area of Imbituba was the likely source of hazardous chemical elements (e.g., Mg, Sr, Nd, and Pr) in the environment. These leachates were formed due to the presence of coal pyrite and Fe-acid sulfates in said waste piles. The mobility of hazardous chemical elements potentiates changes in the marine ecosystem, in relation to ADG443_NN (m−1), CHL_NN (m−3), and TSM NN (g m−3), with values greater than 20 g m−3 found in 2021 and 2022. This indicated changes in the natural conditions of the marine ecosystem up to 30 km from the coast in the Atlantic Ocean, justifying public initiatives for water treatment on a global scale. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The Mekong River Basin (MRB) is crucial for the livelihoods of over 60 million people across six Southeast Asian countries. Understanding long-term sediment changes is crucial for management and contingency plans, but the sediment concentration data in the MRB are extremely sporadic, making analysis challenging. This study focuses on reconstructing long-term suspended sediment concentration (SSC) data using a novel semi-supervised machine learning (ML) model. The key idea of this approach is to exploit abundant available hydroclimate data to reduce training overfitting rather than solely relying on sediment concentration data, thus enhancing the accuracy of the employed ML models. Extensive experiments on daily hydroclimate and SSC data obtained from 1979 to 2019 at the three main stations (i.e., Chiang Saen, Nong Khai, and Mukdahan) are conducted to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method compared to the state-of-the-art supervised techniques (i.e., Random Forest, XGBoost, CatBoost, MLP, CNN, and LSTM), and surpasses existing semi-supervised methods (i.e., CoReg, ⊓ Model, ICT, and Mean Teacher). This approach is the first semi-supervised method to reconstruct sediment data in the field and has the potential for broader application in other river systems. © 2024 The Author(s)

The ubiquitous and refractory benzophenone (BP)-type ultraviolet filters, which are also endocrine disruptors, were commonly detected in the aquatic matrix and could not be efficiently removed by conventional wastewater treatment processes, thus causing extensive concern. Herein, a novel ternary nanocomposite, P-g-CN/α-Bi2O3/WO3 (P-gBW), was successfully fabricated by mixing cocalcinated components and applied to the decomposition of BP-type ultraviolet filters. The dual-Z-scheme heterostructure of P-gBW enhances visible-light absorption, efficiently facilitates separation and mobility, and prolongs the lifetime of photoinduced charge carriers via double charge transfer mechanisms. The optimum 95 wt% P-gBW exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity, degrading 96% 4-hydroxy benzophenone (4HBP) within 150 min and 93% 2,2′,4,4′-tetrahydroxybenzophenone (BP-2) within 100 min under visible-light illumination, respectively. The pseudo-first-order rate constant of 4HBP (1.15 h−1) was 6.8-, 3.1-, 3.3- and 2.2-fold higher than those of WO3, P-g-CN, α-Bi2O3, and P-g-CN/α-Bi2O3, respectively, while that of BP-2 (1.71 h−1) was 5.2-, 2.2-, 3.2- and 1.5-fold higher, respectively. The improved photocatalytic degradation was attributed to efficient photoinduced charge carrier separation and migration and prevented the recombination of electron holes, as verified by photoluminescence, transient photocurrent response, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Trapping experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance, and band energy position indicated an efficient dual-Z-scheme heterostructure. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
