The Pan-Eurasian Experiment Modelling Platform(PEEX-MP)is one of the key blocks of the PEEX Research *** PEEX MP has more than 30 models and is directed towards seamless envir-onmental *** main focus area is the Arctic-boreal regions and *** models used in PEEX-MP cover several main components of the Earth’s system,such as the atmosphere,hydrosphere,pedosphere and biosphere,and resolve the physicalchemicalbiological processes at different spatial and temporal scales and *** paper introduces and discusses PEEX MP multi-scale modelling concept for the Earth system,online integrated,forward/inverse,and socioeconomical modelling,and other approaches with a particular focus on applications in the PEEX geographical *** employed high-performance com-puting facilities,capabilities,and PEEX dataflow for modelling results are *** virtual research platforms(PEEXView,Virtual Research Environment,Web-based Atlas)for handling PEEX modelling and observational results are *** over-all approach allows us to understand better physical-chemicalbiological processes,Earth’s system interactions and feedbacks and to provide valuable information for assessment studies on evaluating risks,impact,consequences,*** population,envir-onment and climate in the PEEX *** work was also one of the last projects of *** Zilitinkevich,who passed away on 15 February *** the finalization took time,the paper was actually submitted in 2023 and we could not argue that the final paper text was agreed with him.

Research on the Palu earthquake in the period of August to October 2018 has been carried out in the Palu Koro Fault (PKF) zone with a hypocenter of 5-20 km. This study aims to determine the fractal dimensions of these earthquakes based on the relationship between logarithmic frequency and earthquake magnitude correlation introduced by Gutenberg-Richter. Statistical correlation between logarithmic frequency and earthquake magnitude was calculated using the inversion approach. Based on the calculation results obtained fractal dimension value of 1.0378, which describes the seismicity pattern at a depth of 5-20 km. It indicates that the earthquakes triggered by the movement in rupture segments which seen as points along the PKF zone. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Microplastics removal through water treatment plants: Its feasibility, efficiency, future prospects and enhancement by proper waste management

With water treatment plants providing a viable solution for removal of microplastics from the environment, this review examines the overall and stage-wise efficiency of various water treatment technologies in removing microplastics and the technologies for managing water treatment wastes. More than 80 scholarly papers published in the past 10 years were reviewed. This review showed highly variable efficiency of the water treatment technologies with primary treatment of wastewater treatment plant reported to remove 16.5 to 98.4% microplastics. Secondary treatment of wastewater treatment plant has overall microplastics removal efficiency ranging from 78.1 to 100% and stage-wise efficiency from 7% (activated sludge) to 99.9% (membrane reactor). Tertiary treatment removes an overall 87.3% to above 99.9% microplastics. Initial coagulation and sedimentation of drinking water treatment plant can normally remove 1.8% to 54.5% of microplastics though advanced treatment pushes microplastics removal to overall 88.6%. Use of larger-than-normal dose of flocculent experimentally significantly increases microplastics removal up to 62%. The largest fraction of microplastics removed conventionally is trapped in sludge. This review highlights the feasibility of water treatment for removal of microplastics from water sources but reveals sludge and membranes as significant sources of microplastics from water treatment. It recommends enhancement of water treatment through adjustment of coagulants, potential use of emerging sol-gel technology and incorporation of advanced treatment for more efficient removal of microplastics. It advocates thermal pretreatment of sludge to potentially facilitate microplastics breakdown and recycle of membrane to reduce re-entry of microplastics into the environment. © 2021 The Author(s)

While high-resolution MS (HRMS) can be used for identification and quantification of novel per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), low-resolution MS/MS is the more commonly used and affordable approach for routine PFAS monitoring. Of note, perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), two of the smaller carboxylic acid containing-PFAS, have only one major MS/MS transition, preventing the use of qualitative transitions for verification on low-resolution instrumentation. Recently our lab has observed widespread chemical interference in the quantitative ion channel for PFPeA (263→219) and PFBA (213→169) in numerous matrices. PFPeA interference was investigated using HRMS and putatively assigned as a diprotic unsaturated fatty acid (263.1288 Da) in shellfish and a separate interferent (262.1087 Da) in hot cocoa, which had been previously described by the FDA. PFBA interference caused by saturated oxo-fatty acids, previously demonstrated in tissue, was also observed in liquid condensate from a residential air conditioning unit. Therefore, in support of PFAS analysis on low-resolution instrumentation, authors recommend several adjustments to analytical methods including altering LC conditions as well as using matched internal standards to investigate and expressly confirm PFBA and PFPeA detections in both biological and environmental samples. © 2022, The Authors. Soil contamination by antibiotics is a global issue of great concern that contributes to the rise of bacterial antibiotic resistance and can have toxic effects on non-target organisms. This study evaluated the variations of molecular, cellular, and histological parameters in Eisenia fetida earthworms exposed to sulfamethazine (SMZ) and tetracycline (TC), two antibiotics commonly found in agricultural soils. The earthworms were exposed for 14 days to a series of concentrations (0, 10, 100, and 1000 mg/kg) of both antibiotics. Sulfamethazine and TC did not affect the survival of E. fetida, however, other effects at different levels of biological complexity were detected. The two highest concentrations of SMZ reduced the viability of coelomocytes. At the highest TC concentration, there was a noticeable decline in cell viability, acetylcholinesterase activity, and the relative presence of mucopolysaccharides in the epidermis. Glutathione S-transferase activity decreased in all TC treatments and at the highest SMZ concentration. However, levels of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls did not change, suggesting an absence of oxidative stress. Tetracycline was neurotoxic to E. fetida and changed the integrity of the epidermis. Both antibiotics altered the intestinal microbiota of E. fetida, leading to a reduction in the relative abundance of bacteria from the phyla Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, while causing an increase in the phylum Actinobacteroidota. All observed changes indicate that both SMZ and TC can disrupt the earthworms' immune system and gut microbiome, while fostering the growth of bacteria that harbour antibiotic resistance genes. Finally, both antibiotics exerted additional metabolic and physiological effects that increased the vulnerability of E. fetida to pathogens. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Density functional modeling and total scattering analysis of the atomic structure of a quaternary CaO−MgO−Al2O3−SiO2 (CMAS) glass: Uncovering the local environment of calcium and magnesium

Quaternary CaO−MgO−Al2O3−SiO2 (CMAS) glasses are important constituents of the Earth's lower crust and mantle, and they also have important industrial applications such as in metallurgical processes, concrete production, and emerging low-CO2 cement technologies. In particular, these applications rely heavily on the composition-structure-reactivity relationships for CMAS glasses, which are not yet well established. In this study, we combined force-field molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to generate detailed structural representations for a CMAS glass. The generated structures are not only thermodynamically favorable (according to DFT calculations) but also agree with experiments (including our x-ray and neutron total scattering data as well as literature data). Detailed analysis of the final structure (including partial pair distribution functions, coordination number, and oxygen environment) enabled existing discrepancies in the literature to be reconciled and has revealed important structural information on the CMAS glass, specifically (i) the unambiguous assignment of medium-range atomic ordering, (ii) the preferential role of Ca atoms as charge compensators and Mg atoms as network modifiers, (iii) the proximity of Mg atoms to free oxygen sites, and (iv) clustering of Mg atoms. Electronic property calculations suggest higher reactivity for Ca atoms as compared with Mg atoms, and that the reactivity of oxygen atoms varies considerably depending on their local bonding environment. Overall, this information may enhance our mechanistic understanding on CMAS glass dissolution behavior in the future, including dissolution-related mechanisms occurring during the formation of low-CO2 cements.

Diatom biosilica as a supplementary cementitious material

The use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) is a key method used to reduce the embodied carbon of cement-based materials. Uncertainty in traditional SCM markets has led to increased interest in alternative, natural SCM materials. In this work, biosilica derived from freshly cultured diatom frustules (grown byThalassiosira pseudonanaandPhaeodactylum tricornutum) was assessed as an alternative SCM for the first time. The chemical reactivity of each biosilica source was assessed using a small-scale version of ASTM C1897 (the R3 test) previously developed by the authors. The chemical reactivity ofT. pseudonanafrustules was relatively high (i.e., greater than that of blast furnace slag, but lower than that of metakaolin).P. tricornutumfrustules exhibited a lower chemical reactivity, similar to a Class F fly ash. Results demonstrate the potential to grow highly reactive biominerals using diatoms and highlight the potential tunability of diatom biosilica for use as a novel, sustainable SCM.

Impact of leachate on irrigation water quality around TPST Piyungan

Rubbish is becoming a global environmental issue as the amount of waste generated constantly increases due to the continuous growth in the level of consumption. The previous investigation reported that the existence of waste management facility known as TPST such as Piyungan in Bantul Regency as a facility for managing rubbish can have a positive or negative impact on the environment. This is because the leachate from the waste is suspected to pollute the surrounding irrigation water. Therefore, this study aims to determine the impact of leachate on the quality of irrigation water around TPST Piyungan using field surveys and laboratory tests. The water sample was taken in Sitimulyo, one of the villages affected by TPST Piyungan activities, and in Jambidan village as point control. The physical and chemical parameters of the water sample tested include temperature, pH, COD, BOD, TSS, TDS, Zn, Fe, Cr, Cu, and Pb. This was followed by the evaluation of the Index Pollution raw quality Class IV, as stated in the Governor Regulation of the Special Region of Yogyakarta Number 20 of 2008 to determine the quality status. The results showed that the status of the water sample is in category IV, which fulfills raw quality (good condition), where point 1 has a value of 0.22 and 0.13 for points 2 and 3. This indicated that the irrigation water quality is not affected by the leachate generated from the TPST Piyungan.

Increasing aquaculture cultivation produces large quantities of wastewater. If not handled properly, it can have negative impacts on the environment. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are one of the phytoremediation methods that can be applied to treat aquaculture effluent. This research was aimed at determining the performance of Cyperus rotundus in removing COD, BOD, TSS, turbidity, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate from the batch CW system. Treatment was carried out for 30 days with variations in the number of plants (10, 15, and 20) and variations in media height (10, 12, and 14 cm). The result showed that aquaculture effluent contains high levels of organic compounds and nutrients, and C. rotundus can grow and thrive in 100% of aquaculture effluent. Besides that, the use of C. rotundus in CWs with the effect of numbers of plants and media height showed performance of COD, BOD, TSS, turbidity, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate with 70, 79, 90, 96, 64, 82, 92, and 48% of removal efficacy, respectively. There was no negative impact observed on C. rotundus growth after exposure to aquaculture effluent, as indicated by the increase in wet weight, dry weight, and growth rate when compared to the control. Thus, adding aquaculture effluent to CWs planted with C. rotundus supports the growth and development of plants while also performing phytoremediation. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Low head hydropower has the potential to produce green energy with a minimum on the environment and is one of the best choices for decentralized power plants. Aceh is one of many regions in Indonesia with hilly topography and many river streams. Of the 66 rivers in Aceh that have potential energy sources that can be developed 98.5 percent are low head. Generally, the technique for overcoming altitude problems in low river flows is the use of low head turbines. An important aspect of head power generation techniques is the selection of turbines. The study aimed to study low head propeller turbines for the use of micro hydropower plants. By calculating the main dimensions and main components of the turbine, field experiments were carried out to determine turbine rotation and energy, as well as turbine efficiency at a flow rate of 0.06 m3/sec and a 3.5-meter head. The calculation results obtained by a specific turbine speed of 1.53, runner diameter of 0.30 meters, hub diameter of 0.06 meters, shaft diameter 0.03, runner length 1.08, triangular speed of 30 degrees with the number of blades 4 pieces. From the results of field experiments, the maximum turbine rotation speed is 1828 rpm, the turbine power is 2,530 watts with a voltage between 220 to 240 volts while the maximum efficiency is 57 percent. It can be concluded that propeller-type turbines with the low head are suitable for micro power plants, especially in remote areas. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
