2021 Energy-Climate Hackathon: What: Approximately 40 participants-with expertise spanning energy, computer science, and weather and climate research-joined a week-long Energy-Climate data "hackathon"in a run-up to the 2021 UN COP26 conference. Six projects to promote and grow data and science understanding were initiated and developed by teams over the course of the week, supported by access to state-of-the-art computational resources and stimulated by keynote speakers from industry and academia. The hackathon concluded with teams presenting their output to a panel of invited experts. The conference was initiated by University of Oxford Dr. Sarah Sparrow, Professor David Wallom, Professor Tim Woollings, and University of Reading Professor David Brayshaw, Dr. Hannah Bloomfield, in partnership with the Met Office, the United Kingdom's national meteorological service, and with support from the United Kingdom's CEDA-JASMIN service and Gurobi optimization software. Background: Arsenic exposure can cause adverse health effects. The effects of long-term low-to-moderate exposure and methylations remain unclear. Objective: This study aims to examine the association between low-to-moderate arsenic exposure and urothelial tract cancers while considering the effects of methylation capacity. Methods: In this study, 5,811 participants were recruited from an arseniasis area in Taiwan for inorganic arsenic metabolite analysis. This follow-up study was conducted between August 1995 and December 2017. We identified 85 urothelial tract cancers in these participants, including 49 bladder and 36 upper urothelial tract cancer cases. A Cox proportional hazards model was employed. Results: The analyses revealed a significant association between concentrations of inorganic arsenic in water > 100 ug/L and bladder cancer occurrence, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 4.88 (95% CI 1.35–17.61). A monotonic trend was observed between concentrations of inorganic arsenic in water (from 0 to > 100 ug/L) and the incidence of urothelial tract cancer, including bladder cancer (p < 0.05) and upper urothelial tract cancers (p < 0.05). Participants with a lower primary methylation index or higher secondary methylation index had a prominent effect. Conclusions: Rigorous regulations and active interventions should be considered for populations with susceptible characteristics. © 2023, The Author(s).

Detecting Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB) in paddy fields is one of the essential issues in Indonesia to prevent losses in rice production. This study reports the effectiveness of textural analysis using drone-acquired data over paddy fields in West Java, evaluating the potential of integrating textural and thermal characteristics. We used drone data combined with machine learning techniques to distinguish different levels of BLB impact. The normalized difference texture index derived from Haralick textural features was used as a predictor. The findings revealed that incorporating textural features enhanced the disease detection accuracy significantly compared with the traditional approach based on spectral indices. The random forest algorithm, which merges texture and vegetation indices, achieved a classification accuracy of 0.984. The proposed method offers a robust, noninvasive solution for BLB disease detection, contributing substantially to safeguarding crop yields and mitigating global food security issues. © 2024, The Authors. Air pollution, particularly ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution, poses a significant risk to public health, underscoring the importance of comprehending the long-term impact on health burden and expenditure at national and subnational levels. Therefore, this study aims to quantify the disease burden and healthcare expenditure associated with PM2.5 exposure in Taiwan and assess the potential benefits of reducing pollution levels. Using a comparative risk assessment framework that integrates an auto-aggressive integrated moving average model, we evaluated the avoidable burden of cardiopulmonary diseases (including ischemic heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and diabetes mellitus) and related healthcare expenditure under different air quality target scenarios, including status quo and target scenarios of 15, 10, and 5 μg/m3 reduction in PM2.5 concentration. Our findings indicate that reducing PM2.5 exposure has the potential to significantly alleviate the burden of multiple diseases. Comparing the estimated attributable disease burden and healthcare expenditure between reference and target scenarios from 2022 to 2050, the avoidable disability-adjusted life years were 0.61, 1.83, and 3.19 million for the 15, 10, and 5 μg/m3 target scenarios, respectively. Correspondingly, avoidable healthcare expenditure ranged from US$ 0.63 to 3.67 billion. We also highlighted the unequal allocation of resources and the need for policy interventions to address health disparities due to air pollution. Notably, in the 5 μg/m3 target scenario, Kaohsiung City stands to benefit the most, with 527,368 disability-adjusted life years avoided and US$ 0.53 billion saved from 2022 to 2050. Our findings suggest that adopting stricter emission targets can effectively reduce the health burden and associated healthcare expenditure in Taiwan. The production of low-cost solid adsorbents for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture has gained massive consideration. Biomass wastes are preferred as precursors for synthesis of CO2 solid adsorbents, due to their high CO2 adsorption efficiency, and ease of scalable low-cost production. This review particularly focuses on waste biomass-derived adsorbents with their CO2 adsorption performances. Specifically, studies related to carbon (biochar and activated carbon) and silicon (silicates and geopolymers)-based adsorbents were summarized. The impact of experimental parameters including nature of biomass, synthesis route, carbonization temperature and type of activation methods on the CO2 adsorption capacities of biomass-derived pure carbon and silicon-based adsorbents were evaluated. The development of various enhancement strategies on biomass-derived adsorbents for CO2 capture and their responsible factors that impact adsorbent's CO2 capture proficiency were also reviewed. The possible CO2 adsorption mechanisms on the adsorbent's surface were highlighted. The challenges and research gaps identified in this research area have also been emphasized, which will help as further research prospects. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Implantable biomedical devices (IBDs) have garnered wide-scale attention in recent years due to their enormous contribution to the biomedical sector. However, an uninterrupted and reliable power source has consistently been the primary barrier for IBDs, which is greatly alleviated by batteries. The widespread application of battery-powered IBDs is hindered by several limitations, including bulkiness, limited capacity and shelf-life, and expenditure associated with surgery-based battery recharge/replacement. To address these challenges, state-of-the-art self-powering technologies have emerged, including implantable piezoelectric nanogenerators (iPENGs) and implantable triboelectric nanogenerators (iTENGs). These technologies enable IBDs to operate autonomously by harnessing the minute mechanical movements of internal organs, such as heartbeat, respiration, blood circulation, muscle contraction/relaxation, and lung vibration. This review focuses on the recent advancements in iTENGs and iPENGs for the development of self-powered IBDs with a wide range of applications, including energy harvesting from biomechanical and ultrasound sources and energy storage using batteries and capacitors. This study also explores the extensive sensing applications of IBDs in various areas including cardiac, gastrointestinal, bladder, and ligament-strain monitoring. Finally, therapeutic applications of IBDs, such as nerve stimulation, bone stimulation, cartilage therapy, tissue regeneration, muscle stimulation, drug delivery, and diabetes management are discussed. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Accelerating Electric Vehicle Uptake: Modelling Public Policy Options on Prices and Infrastructure

Transitioning to passenger battery electric vehicles (BEV) can mitigate climate change impacts of road transportation. We develop a novel BEV policy model, nesting it within a national-scale macroeconomic system dynamics model ( iSDG-Australia ) to simulate a suite of policy pathways, underpinned by combinations of price incentive and infrastructure support. Subsidising vehicle purchase price brings forward the price-parity tipping point, rapidly accelerating BEVs’ share of new car sales. However, ongoing complementary charging infrastructure investment is critical to reach 100% new BEV car sales by 2050 in Australia. Despite rapid transition, the fleet we modelled would not achieve net-zero by 2050 due to vehicle longevity;and suddenly ceasing financial incentives could retard BEV sales by a decade. Results suggest emissions reductions are maximised by the fastest transition of the passenger vehicle fleet to BEVs, entailing government policy support for adequate infrastructure deployment and financial incentives to achieve earlier BEV price-parity with fossil-fuelled vehicles. © 2021, The Authors. This study aims to discover the obstacles and provide recommendations on the technical and institutional aspects of the chosen communal WWTP. The methods used in this study were field survey and questionnaire. the data were analyzed using quantitative, qualitative, and SWOT analysis. There are 11 out of 13 communal WWTPs that do not work optimally. The technical obstacle encountered in the operation of the chosen communal WWTPs is the huge building capacity that does not meet the criteria of HRT design. The recommendations for the technical problem include lowering the water level and reducing the number of baffles in communal WWTP. The obstacle faced in the operation of chosen communal WWTPs in terms of institutional and community participation aspects is that the maintenance is only known by few people. The recommendation for the aspects of institutional and community participation is for KPP to arrange a socialization on the maintenance of communal WWTP based on its maintenance module. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

All-solid-state electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices with prolonged lifetime, operational stability, and mechanical flexibility can be a promising route to powering up wearable electronics. However, conventional EES devices have been often hindered by a gradual decrease in energy capacity due to low ionic conducting electrolytes, non-suitable electrode materials, or poor electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Herein, we propose a harmonization of the molecular-level tailoring of ionic gel polymer electrolyte (IGPE) and graphene-based electrodes, significantly improving and sustaining the electrochemical performance (11.9 μWh cm-2) of EES microsupercapacitor (MSC) devices. Our optimized MSC device based on ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (EMIM-FSI) and interdigitated reduced-graphene oxide (rGO) electrode array maintains 99% of the initial electrochemical capacity even after 20,000 cycles, also demonstrating the excellent mechanical flexibility (bending radius up to 4 mm) and environmental stability (>30 days) of the MSC-based array. Molecular-level simulation and spectroscopic atomic analysis revealed noticeably lower residual ionic liquid (IL) molecules of EMIM-FSI, compared to EMIM-trifluoromethyl FSI, between the graphene-based layers of electrodes during the charge/discharge cycles. Therefore, our optimization strategy and finding will pave the way to accomplishing next-generation of all-solid-state EES devices with ultra-high operational stability, powering wearable electronics. © 2022, The Authors. Decarbonization strategies of building materials used in the construction industry

Building materials like steel, cement, and concrete are mainly the most used man-made materials in the world and the core materials for the construction industry. The high demand for these materials is increasing rapidly, resulting in significant greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere and contributing to global warming; therefore, a crucial need exists to investigate their environmental impact and to find effective strategies to decarbonize the building material industry. This paper aims to review the available decarbonization strategies that can be implemented in the building materials industry, especially in the steel and cement industry, to decrease CO 2 emissions associated with the production of building materials. It also proposes the use of alternative materials which have a reduced environmental impact compared to the traditional ones, like the use of fiber-reinforced polymer instead of steel for reinforcing structural elements or the use of alternative cement like geopolymer instead of ordinary Portland cement. The reported results of this study stated that the widespread production of concrete, cement, and steel leads to a negative impact on the environment. Additionally, the current standards for building materials are based on technical performance without considering their environmental impacts; therefore, using alternative materials helps to balance the technical and environmental performances. Utilizing geopolymer cement as a replacement for Portland cement reduced the CO 2 emissions by 10 to 70%, while adopting Fiber-reinforced polymer instead of steel in structural members reduced the CO 2 emissions by 4 to 75%, depending on the type of the FRP. Furthermore, reducing CO 2 emissions either in steel or in the concrete industry requires developing new technologies, which will be a key factor in accomplishing developments in these sectors.
