This is the third special issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (JAFC) based on the Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division (AGFD) technical program, at the 262nd American Chemical Society National Meeting. This was the first national meeting held in a hybrid format, both virtually and in-person in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., on August 22-26, 2021. The AGFD proudly hosted 12 symposia, including three award symposia. There were 34 sessions held in total, with 143 oral presentations and 49 poster presentations. This meeting was highly successful in terms of attendance, and technology issues experienced at the previous virtual meetings were successfully resolved.

Cu-NH3 bearing effluents arise from electroplating and metal extraction industries, requiring innovative and sustainable Cu recovery technologies to reduce their adverse environmental impact. CO32- and Zn are often co-occurring, and thus, selective Cu recovery from these complex liquid streams is required for economic viability. This study assessed 23 sustainable biosorbents classified as tannin-rich, lignin-rich, chitosan/chitin, dead biomass, macroalgae or biochar for their Cu adsorption capacity and selectivity in a complex NH3-bearing bioleachate. Under a preliminary screen with 12 mM Cu in 1 M ammoniacal solution, most biosorbents showed optimal Cu adsorption at pH 11, with pinecone remarkably showing high removal efficiencies (up to 68%) at all tested pH values. Further refinements on select biosorbents with pH, contact time, and presence of NH3, Zn and CO32- showed again that pinecone has a high maximum adsorption capacity (1.07 mmol g-1), worked over pH 5-12 and was Cu-selective with 3.97 selectivity quotient (KCu/Zn). Importantly, pinecone performance was maintained in a real Cu/NH3/Zn/CO32- bioleachate, with 69.4% Cu removal efficiency. Unlike synthetic adsorbents, pinecones require no pre-treatment, which together with its abundance, selectivity, and efficiency without the need for prior NH3 removal, makes it a competitive and sustainable Cu biosorbent for complex Cu-NH3 bearing streams. Overall, this study demonstrated the potential of integrating bioleaching and biosorption as a clean Cu recovery technology utilizing only sustainable resources (i.e., bio-lixiviant and biosorbents). This presents a closed-loop approach to Cu extraction and recovery from wastes, thus effectively addressing elemental sustainability. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Study on the accessibility of water sources to meet the water needs of rural communities in semi-arid regions of Indonesia

There are a large number of people in the world who live without an adequate supply of clean water, and spend hours to get clean water. For this reason, access to water and water sources is one of the main keys to meeting the needs of the community's clean water, specifically rural communities in the semi-arid regions of Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the extent to which access to clean water sources affects the patterns of water use and fulfillment of rural communities. The method used is a survey completed with a questionnaire and observation. The object of the research was the rural water user community in TTS Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province with a total of 87 families, and water sources in the study area. Samples were divided into three areas which were categorized as dry, normal and wet. based on the analysis of rainfall data at 14 rain stations. The results showed an average water use level of 49 Lpcd (SD = 25) and the distance to the water source as far as 521 m (SD = 1100). There is a negative correlation between the distance of the water source and the amount of clean water used. Water availability factors affect water usage more than long distances but can be reached. This study also found that the use of clean water by the community is adaptive to the availability of water according to environmental conditions. This study recommends the importance of handling clean water issues according to the characteristics of each different region.

Analysis of discharge and area of the debris flow based on geological structural and rainfall levels in the slopes of Mount Abang, Kintamani

Geological structural and rainfall intensity causes the parameters of soil shear strength to decline, especially in the surface layer of soil in volcanic rocks that have not experienced weathering. Study of geological structures and rainfall intensity against the hazard of a landslide was destroyed on the slopes of Mount Abang in the Abang Batudinding Village. Soil investigations using the Geoelectric method and sampling at 6 boreholes. Geological analysis on interpretation of slope outcrops, average rainfall analysis of the Thiessen Polygon method and analysis of design flood discharge using the NHSU method. Analysis results show the morphology of the slopes of Mount Abang with a slope of more than 40% and lithology of weathered volcanic rocks consisting of volcanic breccias, and tuffs breccias in conditions rather mild to moderate weathering, if have average effective rainfall for 10-50 years at 238 mm/day. The results also show that the peak discharge of debris flow was 98.639 m3/sec with the volume of debris flow 50072.85 m3 and the width of the range was 49.5 m. This debris flow volume indicated that residents around the river with a range of 49.5 m are at risk of debris flow sediment with a thickness of 1-1.5 m.

A study to develop a convective eco-friendly fixed-bed solar dryer is presented in this article. The aim of this study was to design an efficient eco-friendly fixed bed dryer using solar collector and solar photovoltaic panel with a forced convective system. The design consists of a V-corrugated solar collector, a centrifugal fan, a solar photovoltaic module (100 WP) and a drying unit in the mini-silo model with five layers. The dryer performance test was conducted in September, October, and November 2017 in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. The observation showed that the temperature of the solar collector and the first layer of the drying unit could reach 40-70°C on a sunny day and 30-50°C in cloudy/rainy conditions. The efficiency of the daily collector varied from 20% to 50%. Based on a multiple regression analysis, it showed that some variables (solar intensity, voltage of photovoltaic panel, air speed around the blower, air collector velocity, collector relative humidity, ambient temperature and relative humidity temperature) significantly influenced the collector temperature. The result of drying simulation using red pepper showed that the design has a potential to be used as an eco-friendly fixed bed convective drying. Based on the empirical model, the drying time needed to reach 12% of moisture content (wet basis), respectively, was 5-6 days for the first tray, 8-9 days for the second tray and 9-10 days for the third tray in rainy season. © 2019 Technoscience Publications. Indicine cattle, also referred to as zebu (Bos taurus indicus), play a central role in pastoral communities across a wide range of agro-ecosystems, from extremely hot semiarid regions to hot humid tropical regions. However, their adaptive genetic changes following their dispersal into East Asia from the Indian subcontinent have remained poorly documented. Here, we characterize their global genetic diversity using high-quality whole-genome sequencing data from 354 indicine cattle of 57 breeds/populations, including major indicine phylogeographic groups worldwide. We reveal their probable migration into East Asia was along a coastal route rather than inland routes and we detected introgression from other bovine species. Genomic regions carrying morphology-, immune-, and heat-tolerance-related genes underwent divergent selection according to Asian agro-ecologies. We identify distinct sets of loci that contain promising candidate variants for adaptation to hot semi-arid and hot humid tropical ecosystems. Our results indicate that the rapid and successful adaptation of East Asian indicine cattle to hot humid environments was promoted by localized introgression from banteng and/or gaur. Our findings provide insights into the history and environmental adaptation of indicine cattle.

Lumpur Island in Sidoarjo, East Java, is an island formed by mud sedimentation. This island emerged after the Lapindo mud disaster. This study is aimed at mapping the distribution and the extent of mangrove ecosystem as well as potentially, to analyze land use for Eco Fishery Tourism. This research uses technical analysis of aerial photographs using a low-cost drone and satellite images through the process of scattered aerial images and satellite imagery. It shows that Lumpur Island has an area of 85.37 ha, where 70.38 ha of the island was covered by mangrove ecosystem. This island is potentially managed as Eco Fishery Tourism by Land use management based on area mangrove ecosystem, puddle area and pond. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
