Public opinion about solar radiation management: A cross-cultural study in 20 countries around the world

Some argue that complementing climate change mitigation measures with solar radiation management (SRM) might prove a last resort to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. To make a socially responsible decision on whether to use SRM, it is important to consider also public opinion, across the globe and particularly in the Global South, which would face the greatest risks from both global warming and SRM. However, most research on public opinion about SRM stems from the Global North. We report findings from the first large-scale, cross-cultural study on the public opinion about SRM among the general public (N = 2,248) and students (N = 4,583) in 20 countries covering all inhabited continents, including five countries from the Global South and five ‘non-WEIRD’ (i.e. not Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, and Democratic) countries from the Global North. As public awareness of SRM is usually low, we provided participants with information on SRM, including key arguments in favour of and against SRM that appear in the scientific debate. On average, acceptability of SRM was significantly higher in the Global South than in the ‘non-WEIRD’ Global North, while acceptability in the ‘WEIRD’ Global North was in between. However, we found substantial variation within these clusters, especially in the ‘non-WEIRD’ Global North, suggesting that countries do not form homogenous clusters and should thus be considered individually. Moreover, the average participants’ views, while generally neither strong nor polarised, differed from some expert views in important ways, including that participants perceived SRM as only slightly effective in limiting global warming. Still, our data suggests overall a conditional, reluctant acceptance. That is, while on average, people think SRM would have mostly negative consequences, they may still be willing to tolerate it as a potential last resort to fight global warming, particularly if they think SRM has only minor negative (or even positive) impact

Microbial growth may occur in carpet dust when exposed to elevated moisture levels, but it is unknown how diurnal variations in equilibrium relative humidity (ERH) affect this growth. Our goal is to apply the "time-of-wetness" (TOW) concept from fungal growth on drywall to model fungal growth in carpet. Used carpet samples were embedded with dust, placed in an experimental chamber and then the ERH within the chambers was varied from 50% to either 85% or 100% for a period of 0, 6, 12, 18, or 24 hours per day over a two-week period. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) measurements of fungi revealed that for the 85% and 100% samples, growth could be modeled with the standard TOW and activation limited growth curve. These measurements demonstrated that the relative growth rate fit the TOW model with the Pearson Correlation Coefficients of 0.958 for 100% TOW and 0.898 for 85% TOW. DNA sequencing revealed increased abundance of species in the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium, among others, at increased moisture. Ultimately, this data can be used to accurately model fungal growth in housing based on moisture and can be utilized in future public health, policy, and epidemiological models. © 2018 15th Conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2018. Coral reef ecosystems provide essential ecosystem services, but face significant threats from climate change and human activities. Although advances in deep learning have enabled automatic classification of coral reef conditions, conventional deep models struggle to achieve high performance when processing complex underwater ecological images. Vision foundation models, known for their high accuracy and cross-domain generalizability, offer promising solutions. However, fine-tuning these models requires substantial computational resources and results in high carbon emissions. To address these challenges, adapter learning methods such as Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) have emerged as a solution. This study introduces an approach integrating the DINOv2 vision foundation model with the LoRA fine-tuning method. The approach leverages multi-temporal field images collected through underwater surveys at 15 dive sites at Koh Tao, Thailand, with all images labeled according to universal standards used in citizen science-based conservation programs. The experimental results demonstrate that the DINOv2-LoRA model achieved superior accuracy, with a match ratio of 64.77%, compared to 60.34% achieved by the best conventional model. Furthermore, incorporating LoRA reduced the trainable parameters from 1,100M to 5.91M. Transfer learning experiments conducted under different temporal and spatial settings highlight the exceptional generalizability of DINOv2-LoRA across different seasons and sites. This study is the first to explore the efficient adaptation of foundation models for multi-label classification of coral reef conditions under multi-temporal and multi-spatial settings. Groundwater is one kind of clean water resource. The increased development of human activities, such as agriculture, industry, and settlements, has a cumulative impact on groundwater conditions. The main purpose of this research is to assess the intrinsic vulnerability of shallow groundwater to pollution in the City of Pasuruan. The utilized method in the intrinsic vulnerability assessment of shallow groundwater is the GOD method, by utilizing geoelectric data. The parameters used in the calculation are aquifer layer type (G), soil layer type above the aquifer layer (O), and ground water depth (D). The City of Pasuruan has a moderate to high index of intrinsic vulnerability, and shallow water at the study site is categorized as vulnerable to pollutants.

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Palm Kernel Shells as a Diesel Fuel Substitution for Hot-Mixed Asphalt

Indonesia is one of the biggest oil palm producing countries. Solid waste from processing palm oil into crude palm oil (CPO) includes palm shells. This palm shell waste can be used as an alternative to diesel fuel for aggregate heating. This study aims to analyze the investment of the use of palm shells as an asphalt burner replacing diesel. Primary data were obtained from field and laboratory identification. In contrast, secondary data were obtained from relevant agencies, the Department of Public Development and Public Housing, PT Bara Energi Biomass and PT Damai Citra Mandiri. The method used is a quantitative descriptive analysis by calculating the annual costs and benefits over the machine's life, ten years. This study uses the Cost-Benefit Analysis. Four investment criteria are calculated: (1) Net Present Value (NPV), (2) Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR), (3) Payback period (PbP), (4) Internal rate of return (IRR). The results found that palm shells' use as an asphalt burner for diesel substitutes showed high costs and top benefits. The calculation of economic feasibility with investment criteria shows that the NPV has a positive value, which means it is feasible. BCR shows a ratio of costs and benefits is more than one; it indicates that investment in asphalt production activities is feasible. The calculation of investment in replacing diesel fuel with palm shells shows a positive value of PbP since the first year. The internal rate of return shows that the investment value has met the minimum standard of general interest or replacement.

Recently, there is a new trend to consider wastewater as a precious resource. Since phosphorus is a limited non-renewable element, and MAP (Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate - MgNH4PO4.6H2O) is a valuable slow-release fertilizer, the recovery of phosphorous as MAP has received special attention from scientists all over the world. However, the application of this process with municipal wastewater is still a challenge, due to low concentration of phosphorus and high volume of municipal wastewater. This study investigates the potential of reclaiming MAP from municipal wastewater by combination of adsorption and crystallization. Soybean milk residue (okara) was loaded with Zirconium (Zr) to prepare the adsorbent (ZLO). Adsorption and desorption experiments were conducted in a semi-pilot scale ZLO packed colum system. Effects of P: N: Mg molar ratios, chemical sources and temperature on the formation of MAP were examined in an attempt to identify the optimal crystallization conditions. The attained precipitate was characterized using XRD, SEM, FTIR techniques. It was found that the ZLO packed column adsorption-desorption system could pre-concentrate phosphorus from municipal wastewater up to 28.36 times, fitting well the minimum requirement (50 mg P/L) for the economical MAP recovery. Up to 95.19% of dissolved phosphorus in desorption solution was recovered at pH = 9, Mg: N: P molar ratio = 2:2:1, using a combination of MgCl2.6H2O and NH4Cl. The harvested MAP exhibited high purity (92.59%), high P-availability (89% by mass), and extremely low levels of heavy metals. The results prove that it is viable to recover MAP from municipal wastewater by employing ZLO as adsorbent, followed by crystallization. This paves the way for mining phosphorus from municipal wastewater and reducing okara as an agricultural byproduct in a green way. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Economic globalization and population growth have greatly challenged energy, water and land resources to meet demand at national and supra-national level. A growing share of this demand is met through trade. The Belt and Road, a major global initiative of China, with trade as one of its core fields is of particular importance due to greater potential of economic growth, substantial population size and varying degree of resource availability. The initiative reflects a new phase of globalization yet resources management with nexus thinking has received little attention. The increasing economic interdependence of national economies have contributed to rise in production and trade of goods and services, these activities require the input of energy-water-land and generate disturbances in the environment. The multi-regional input-output approach is utilized, to assess resources use by production as well as consumption (for the year 2010). A nexus strength indicator was developed to show the simultaneous use of multiple resources in economic system, conceived as resource nexus. The ternary diagrams were used for screening resources combinations along with *** revealed that China has strong nexus strength that indicates large usage of the three resources together. Besides China, the East European countries were also positioned mostly at the center of ternary plot suggesting somewhat equal contributions of energy, water and land to the resource nexus. On the contrary, countries that appeared at the margins of the plot indicated one or two stronger nexus components in the three resources system. For instance, Russia largely used land, South Korea was entirely driven by energy while India mostly used water in the ternary mix. MAGIC is a system of two Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs), designed to detect very-high-energy gamma rays, and is operating in stereoscopic mode since 2009 at the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos in La Palma, Spain. In 2018, the prototype IACT of the Large-Sized Telescope (LST-1) for the Cherenkov Telescope Array, a next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory, was inaugurated at the same site, at a distance of approximately 100 meters from the MAGIC telescopes. Using joint observations between MAGIC and LST-1, we developed a dedicated analysis pipeline and established the threefold telescope system via software, achieving the highest sensitivity in the northern hemisphere. Based on this enhanced performance, MAGIC and LST-1 have been jointly and regularly observing the Galactic Center, a region of paramount importance and complexity for IACTs. In particular, the gamma-ray emission from the dynamical center of the Milky Way is under debate. Although previous measurements suggested that a supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* plays a primary role, its radiation mechanism remains unclear, mainly due to limited angular resolution and sensitivity. The enhanced sensitivity in our novel approach is thus expected to provide new insights into the question.
