Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) is a valuable biomarker for evaluating chronic stress in preschoolers. However, few studies have explored early life HCC and its associated factors. This prospective cohort study analysed the HCC in children aged 6-48 months and its associations with parental HCC as well as positive and negative parental mental health outcomes. We used data from the ongoing Longitudinal Examination Across Prenatal and Postpartum Health in Taiwan (LEAPP-HIT) project, conducted in Taipei between 2020 and 2024. Hair samples were collected from both parents and children in 177 families (91 samples obtained during pregnancy and 86 during the postpartum period). The parents also completed self-reported questionnaires. Multiple linear regression was conducted to analyse the data. We observed a significant positive correlation between parents' and preschoolers' HCC. Furthermore, maternal depression (adjusted beta coefficient [aβ] = 0.09, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.02, 0.16) and perceived stress (aβ = 0.15, 95% CI = 0.02, 0.26) were positively associated with preschoolers' HCC. By contrast, higher maternal eudaimonia was associated with lower HCC in preschoolers (aβ = -0.11, 95% CI = -0.20, -0.01). For parents, maternal depression, anxiety, and perceived stress were independently associated with an increased HCC during the postnatal period, whereas maternal eudaimonia was negatively associated with HCC. Our results indicate that both mothers and fathers affect children's responses to stress. Assessment of cortisol stress hormone concentrations through hair samples can be a key means of detecting preschoolers' stress levels and enabling early intervention.

Currently, the biggest challenges of the Indonesian Government in water sector is the availability and quality of clean water. The causes of water vulnerability are land use change, rapid population growth, climate change, as well as residential and agricultural activities. In this study, GIS was utilized as tool for determining for retention basin and infiltration well zone as groundwater and surface water conservation. Several criteria were adapted from references such as SNI 03-2453-2002 and Maryland Storm water Design Manual. Several Thematic maps were developed which are slope between 8-30%;clay soil type;open space landuse as paddy field, moor, garden, etc. for developing retention basin zone. While infiltration well zone were needed thematic maps with water table elevation more than 3 m with rock permeability > 2 cm/hr that located outside of hazard zone as well as free of potential pollution as the criteria. Retention basin and infiltration well for aquifer recharge were studied in Bantaeng Regency using GIS tool. Several criteria were set up which allowed building six thematic map and resulting recommendation of retention basin zone as well as infiltration well zone. The results of retention basin zone potentially can be built in Uluere (12.99 km2), Eremerasa (14.19 km2), Sinoa (14.33 km2), and Tompobulu (18.22 km2) districts. While the infiltration well zone are within Eremerasa (20.22 km2) Tompobulu (40.68 km2) and Uluere (45.65 km2) districts. © 2017 IEEE.

To assess the spatial and layer-wise distributions of 26 elements (Na, Al, Mg, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Sb, Co, Ba, Zn, Rb, Cs, La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Yb, Ta, Hf, Th and U) as well as the spatial distributions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a polluted urban river (Turag, Bangladesh), benthic sediment samples from 11 different sampling stations were analyzed. Concentrations of Ti, Cr, Mn, Zn, Rb and Cs ranged from 2330 to 5490, 23–116, 186–4298, 34–7345, 77–186 and 2.19–12.0 μg.g⁻¹(dw), respectively, whereas concentrations of ∑PAHs ranged from 45.8 to 1901 with an average value of 432 μ***⁻¹(dw) in surface sediments. Geo-accumulation index, enrichment factor and pollution load index were used to assess the contamination level. Among the 26 elements, Zn is identified as the major elemental contaminant which shows significant layer-wise variations (RSDs: 21.7–221 %) at all sampling sites. Similarly, Cr, Mn, Ti, V, Fe and Co show layer-wise variation in some specific sampling sites which invokes variable contamination flux over the industrialization and/or urbanization period. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation study ascertained several anthropogenic sources for heavy metal contaminations. Although rare earth elements (La, Ce, Sm, Eu and Yb) seem to have crustal origin, their layer-wise variations are assumed to represent the sediment response toward the pollution load. Integrated study based on the diagnostic ratios and PCA depicted that pyrolytic origins mostly govern the PAHs distributions. Sediments quality guidelines (SQGs) indicated that the highest potential ecological risks occurred for Zn and fluorene at some specific sampling sites. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Two-gap and three-gap superconductivity in AlB2-based films

In contrast to MgB2 superconducting at 39K, the isostructural AlB2 has no superconductivity due to the absence of metallization driven by the covalent state of boron in MgB2. In this paper, we investigate from first principles the superconducting behavior in ultrathin limit of AlB2, and reveal a two-gap superconducting nature with transition temperatures Tcs in the range of 17−26.5K. Our results indicate that the superconductivity in AlB2 films originates mainly from the surface-boron-plane-driven covalent state which crosses the Fermi level because of the quantum confinement. Therefore, the hyperstoichiometric AlB2+x films with the surface boron layer existing on each side of the systems also promise admirable superconductivity. In particular, a high Tc∼47K with an exciting three-gap nature is captured in the thinnest AlB2+x films that possess a stoichiometry of AlB4 and a sandwich configuration of B2−Al−B2. In addition, the effect of external strain on superconducting behavior in the thinnest AlB2 film and sandwich AlB4 film is also involved, which shows that a small compressive strain can further boost the Tcs in both films and a three-gap nature can be also observed in the thinnest AlB2 film under a biaxial tensile strain of 2.0%−2.5%. These findings pave the way not only for study of superconductivity in AlB2-based materials but also the search for multigap superconductors.

Global efforts to mitigate climate change emphasize the critical need to reduce atmospheric CO₂ levels and enhance carbon sinks. Mangrove ecosystems, renowned for their substantial carbon sequestration capacity, play a vital role in sequestering significant amounts of carbon. This review explores carbon fluxes in mangrove ecosystems, emphasizing autochthonous and allochthonous carbon sequestration mechanisms. Specifically, it discusses the pathways through which carbon is absorbed and stored, including biological productivity, sediment accumulation, and carbonate precipitation. Furthermore, the role of microbial communities and root systems in carbon stabilization, nutrient cycling, and methane oxidation is also examined, highlighting their significance in enhancing sequestration efficiency. Moreover, this study evaluates the factors influencing carbon sequestration efficiency in mangroves and the methods used for its quantification. Finally, this review assesses the contribution of mangroves to the global carbon budget, emphasizing their strategic role in offsetting atmospheric CO 2 and enhancing coastal ecosystem resilience. However, significant research gaps remain in understanding the mechanism of carbon transformation, the interaction between diverse carbon sources, sediment dynamics, and long-term stability of buried organic matter across varying mangrove settings.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of adsorbents from groundwater treatment residuals for hexavalent chromium removal from aqueous solutions

Groundwater treatment residuals are rich in nano-sized metal oxides which have the potential to remove various water contaminants. In this study, hexavalent chromium adsorbents were synthesized from the residuals of a 30,000 m3 d-1 groundwater treatment plant in Taiwan. The effects of acid type and ratio, acid concentration, ultrasonication time, and heating duration on adsorption capacity were examined. Adsorbents synthesized using dual-acid solutions yielded lower adsorption capacities compared to those which used pure acid solutions. Adsorption capacity decreased with higher ultrasonication time and heating duration. Chromium removal was improved with higher ionic strength and lower pH of the solution. Results showed high correlation between experimental data and the Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.9607) and the pseudo-second order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9740) suggesting that the dominant mechanism in the adsorption process is chemisorption. The involvement of Fe and Mn species during chromium adsorption was confirmed by the results of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses. © 2017
