Community-based solid waste management planning in the Administrative Village of Surau Gadang, Padang City

The community-based solid waste management system in Administrative Village of Surau Gadang is planned based on SNI-20-3242-2008, with a design period of 8 years (2011-2018). The service level is planned to reach 100%. The total solid waste generation is 64.18 m3/d (organic 60.81 m3/d, inorganic is 0.75 m3/d, while other waste is 2.61 m3/d). The sorting process is according to the type of waste. Residential waste collection uses motorized trash tricycles to TPST (integrated waste treatment plant) and non-residential uses pickup cars to TPS (temporary disposal site). Processing carried out at the source is composting the Takakura method, while in TPST is composting the Bokhasi method, sorting other waste for sale, recycling and making handicrafts. The residue from the remaining processing which was disposed to TPS was 18.43%. The institution formed is a representative of all RW (citizens association). Regulation based on Law No.18 of 2008. The investment in making TPST and its supplementary facilities for eight years is Rp.1,322,000,000, with operational and maintenance costs of Rp.26,678,067/month. The profit obtained is Rp.102,117,284 / month. Community participation can be seen from involvement in technical and non-technical aspects.

The first Large-Sized Telescope (LST-1) proposed for the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) has started to operate in 2019 in La Palma. The large structure of LST-1 - with a 23 m mirror dish diameter - imposes a strict control of its deformations that could affect the pointing accuracy and its overall performance. According to CTA specifications that are conceived to resolve e.g. the fine structure of galactic sources, the LST post-calibration pointing accuracy should be better than 14 arcseconds. To fulfill this requirement, the telescope pointing precision is monitored with two dedicated CCD cameras located at the dish center. The analysis of their images allows us to disentangle different systematic deformations of the structure. In this work, we investigate a complementary approach that offers the possibility to monitor the pointing of the telescope during the acquisition of sky data. After properly cleaning the events from the Cherenkov showers, the reconstructed positions of the stars imaged in the camera field of view are compared to their nominal expected positions in catalogues. This provides a direct measurement of the telescope pointing, that can be used to cross-check the other methods and as a real-time monitoring of the optical properties of the telescope and of the pointing corrections applied by the bending models. Additionally, this method benefits from not relying on specific hardware or dedicated observations. Tree architecture has evolved to support a top-heavy above-ground biomass, but this integral feature poses a weight-induced challenge to trunk stability. Maintaining an upright stem is expected to require vertical proprioception through feedback between sensing stem weight and responding with radial growth. Despite its apparent importance, the principle by which plant stems respond to vertical loading forces remains largely unknown. Here, by manipulating the stem weight of downy birch (Betula pubescens) trees, we show that cambial development is modulated systemically along the stem. We carried out a genetic study on the underlying regulation by combining an accelerated birch flowering program with a recessive mutation at the ELIMÄKI locus (EKI), which causes a mechanically defective response to weight stimulus resulting in stem collapse after just 3 months. We observed delayed wood morphogenesis in eki compared with WT, along with a more mechanically elastic cambial zone and radial compression of xylem cell size, indicating that rapid tissue differentiation is critical for cambial growth under mechanical stress. Furthermore, the touch-induced mechanosensory pathway was transcriptionally misregulated in eki, indicating that the ELIMÄKI locus is required to integrate the weight-growth feedback regulation. By studying this birch mutant, we were able to dissect vertical proprioception from the gravitropic response associated with reaction wood formation. Our study provides evidence for both local and systemic responses to mechanical stimuli during secondary plant development. Alonso-Serra et al. use birch trees to explore vertical proprioception, the growth response of stems to changes in aerial body weight. They identify a genetic locus, which is required for this developmental response, and study the consequences of cambial growth under mechanical stress. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

The unique physico-chemical, electronic, redox, and UV-absorption properties of the engineered nano-particles (ENPs) make them suitable for many industrial applications including consumer goods. Agriculture is a major area where nanotechnologies are applied. Therefore, soil/sediment becomes an important environmental sink for ENP waste disposal. Hence, the fate and transport of ENPs in soil is of particular interest to the scientific community. This short review summarizes the recent findings of studies dealing with the related fundamental concepts. It touches upon the physico-chemical properties of soil and those of ENPs, the soil and solution chemistries, the environmental factors, and the influence of other chemical moieties as possible factors affecting the fate of ENPs in soil. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Enhancing the yield and quality of Kemiri Sunan crude oil by preliminary extraction of feedstock

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel produced by chemical reaction between vegetable oil or animal fat with alcohol and catalyst. The preliminary treatment in extraction of biodiesel feedstock is an important process to obtain maximum yield of crude oil. This study aims to find optimal preliminary treatment on extraction of Kemiri Sunan seed in order to produce crude oil with maximum yield and quality. The research investigated the effects of screw press machine rotation and duration of steaming process. Three levels of duration of steaming used were 30, 60 and 90 minutes. Observations of crude oil yield, moisture content, free fatty acid content, kinematic viscosity, density and color were done. The result suggested that the rotation of screw press machine affected the crude oil yield. The duration of steaming process affected the oil yield, free fatty acid content, kinematic viscosity, density and color. The best oil yield result of 70.3% was obtained from the combination of heating duration of 60' and screw rotation of 25 RPM.

Rubber commodity is one of the superior commodities in South Sumatra. The main problem of the rubber industry that remains unsolved is that the product has a low quality due to poor handling of its raw material. Most farmers, in South Sumatera, often uses coagulant that are not recommended, namely sulfuric acid or para vinegar, alum, TSP fertilizer, a combination of para and alum vinegar, and others such as yam, and tempe washing water. Para vinegar, TSP fertilizer, alum and pineapple/ pineapple juice are acidic which cause smells of ammonia and sulfides. The liquid waste generated in the material process pollutes the environment if it is not properly intervened. Material handling in a rubber factory causes several illnesses for workers. However, the correlation of pollutants with these illnesses are not yet and become the focal point of this report.

Cassava is an agricultural material that is considered as important raw resources in the industrial sector. The benefits are even greater after being modified using lactic acid bacteria. However, the mocaf industry often causes water and air pollution. environmental problems arise after the fermentation process. Determination problems with lightness, TDS (Total Dissolved Solid), conductivity and pH analysis are required to measure the impact to the environment. This research was used waste water from mocaf during 3 days fermentation. The wastewater had the highest color level (Lightness) on initial day of fermentation at 83.7±3.73 and then decrease along the day of fermentation at the averages of 65.2±2.0. The highest TDS was resulted from the mocaf wastewater at a value of 1218 ± 4.6 ppm which continued to decline until day 4. The conductivity and pH showed a decrease along the day of fermentation.
