Understanding the circumstances that lead to pandemics is important for their prevention. Here, we analyze the genomic diversity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We show that SARS-CoV-2 genomic diversity before February 2020 likely comprised only two distinct viral lineages, denoted A and B. Phylodynamic rooting methods, coupled with epidemic simulations, reveal that these lineages were the result of at least two separate cross-species transmission events into humans. The first zoonotic transmission likely involved lineage B viruses around 18 November 2019 (23 October-8 December), while the separate introduction of lineage A likely occurred within weeks of this event.

Background: Mucoadhesive polymers, which may increase the contact time between the polymer and the tissue, have been widely investigated for pharmaceutical formulations. In this study, we developed a new polysaccharidebased mucoadhesive polymer with thermogelling properties. Methods: Hexanoyl glycol chitosan (HGC), a new thermogelling polymer, was synthesized by the chemical modification of glycol chitosan using hexanoic anhydride. The HGC was further modified to include thiol groups to improve the mucoadhesive property of thermogelling HGC. The degree of thiolation of the thiolated HGCs (SHHGCs) was controlled in the range of 5-10% by adjusting the feed molar ratio. The structure of the chemically modified polymers was characterized by ¹H NMR and ATR-FTIR. The sol-gel transition, mucoadhesiveness, and biocompatibility of the polymers were determined by a tube inverting method, rheological measurements, and in vitro cytotoxicity tests, respectively. Results: The aqueous solution (4 wt%) of HGC with approximately 33% substitution showed a sol-gel transition temperature of approximately 41 °C. SH-HGCs demonstrated lower sol-gel transition temperatures (34 ± 1 and 31 ± 1 °C) compared to that of HGC due to the introduction of thiol groups. Rheological studies of aqueous mixture solutions of SH-HGCs and mucin showed that SH-HGCs had stronger mucoadhesiveness than HGC due to the interaction between the thiol groups of SH-HGCs and mucin. Additionally, we confirmed that the thermogelling properties might improve the mucoadhesive force of polymers. Several in vitro cytotoxicity tests showed that SHHGCs showed little toxicity at concentrations of 0.1-1.0 wt%, indicating good biocompatibility of the polymers. Conclusions: The resultant thiolated hexanoyl glycol chitosans may play a crucial role in mucoadhesive applications in biomedical areas. © The Author(s).

Highly toxic cyanides are among the most persistent chemical compounds in effluents, these chemicals are used in several industrial sectors and particularly in mining industry for the extraction of gold. Cyanides frequently appear at low levels in water, deteriorating its quality. In this paper a degradation of 55.76% and 62.99% was obtained using TiO2 catalyst and TiO2 doped with Cu heteropololybdate respectively in 360 min of reaction, applying photodegradation with a 125 watt mercury lamp source. Most of the trials showed that the degraded compound kinetics may be adjusted to a pseudo first order model.

Removal of toxic pollutants such as heavy metals from wastewater is of utmost importance in the current century. Heavy metals have severed a big problem in the world. Several tools have been established to mitigate this problem. In this research paper, Indonesian Kaolin-nano zerovalent iron (IK-nZVI) was synthesized as a model adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from wastewater. The efficiency of IK supported nZVI for Pb(II) removal efficiency was estimated by accompanying batch experiments. The examined parameters included the amount of IK-nZVI, the concentration of Pb(II) removal and the effect of pH. The results revealed that the IK-nZVI was efficient for the removal of Pb(II) from waste water.

Laundry services are emerging in every corner of Bali, particularly at suburban area, from cities to villages. These services help the community to ease their burden. However, the burden for the environment is increase. The wastewater from the laundries should be controlled, which should be handled natural ways. One way of reducing the dangerous chemical from the laundry wastewater can be done by Vertical-Sub-surface Flow Constructed Wetland system, using volcanic rocks as substrate of plant grow and the plant as filters. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of volcanic rock and Canna plants as a filter for the laundry wastewater. The volcanic rock as substrate for the plant grows was place in layers in a drum and the laundry wastewater was flowed. The parameter of wastewater laundry, such as TDS, BOD, COD and total phosphate were measured before and after treatment. The treatment was run for 6 weeks. The result shows that this system is effective that overall can reduce the parameter measured for 53.86%.

The blazars B2 1811+31 and GB6 J1058+2817 were found to be in flaring state during 2020 and 2021, respectively. The high states of the sources were registered by the Fermi-LAT at energies below 100 GeV, triggering observations at higher energies with the MAGIC telescopes, in the UV/X rays with the Swift satellite and with ground-based radio and optical telescopes. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the future ground-based gamma-ray observatory and will be composed of two arrays of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) located in the Northern and Southern hemispheres respectively. The first CTA prototype telescope built on-site, the Large-Sized Telescope (LST-1), is under commissioning in La Palma and has already taken data on numerous known sources. IACTs detect the faint flash of Cherenkov light indirectly produced after a very energetic gamma-ray photon has interacted with the atmosphere and generated an atmospheric shower. Reconstruction of the characteristics of the primary photons is usually done using a parameterization up to the third order of the light distribution of the images. In order to go beyond this classical method, new approaches are being developed using state-of-the-art methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) to reconstruct the properties of each event (incoming direction, energy and particle type) directly from the telescope images. While promising, these methods are notoriously difficult to apply to real data due to differences (such as different levels of night sky background) between Monte Carlo (MC) data used to train the network and real data. The GammaLearn project, based on these CNN approaches, has already shown an increase in sensitivity on MC simulations for LST-1 as well as a lower energy threshold. This work applies the GammaLearn network to real data acquired by LST-1 and compares the results to the classical approach that uses random forests trained on extracted image parameters. Species’ traits and environmental conditions determine the abundance of tree species across the globe. The extent to which traits of dominant and rare tree species differ remains untested across a broad environmental range, limiting our understanding of how species traits and the environment shape forest functional composition. We use a global dataset of tree composition of >22,000 forest plots and 11 traits of 1663 tree species to ask how locally dominant and rare species differ in their trait values, and how these differences are driven by climatic gradients in temperature and water availability in forest biomes across the globe. We find three consistent trait differences between locally dominant and rare species across all biomes;dominant species are taller, have softer wood and higher loading on the multivariate stem strategy axis (related to narrow tracheids and thick bark). The difference between traits of dominant and rare species is more strongly driven by temperature compared to water availability, as temperature might affect a larger number of traits. Therefore, climate change driven global temperature rise may have a strong effect on trait differences between dominant and rare tree species and may lead to changes in species abundances and therefore strong community reassembly. © The Author(s) 2025.

Membrane separation technology has been widely applied in various industrial sectors. Some modification on membrane composition and structure is conducted to improve membrane filtration performance and mitigate fouling phenomena. Fouling on membrane surfaces lead to decrease permeabilty, increase energy consumtion, and shorten membrane life time. The aim of this study is to manufacture PES membrane which involved inorganic additives consits of Carbon and Fe2O3 particles to mitigate fouling tendency. All of membranes were prepared using phase inversion method with dissolving PES polymer into dimethyl formamide (DMF). The result membranes were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to investigate morphological structure and breaking strength to determine mechanical property. Membrane filtration performance were tested using soy protein solution in cross-flow system. The results showed that the addition of inorganic particles in PES membrane caused the increasing of pores which lead to increase pure water flux from 15.14 L/m2.h to 58.67 L/m2.h. Fouling mitigation test towards soy protein also showed that carbon and Fe2O3 particles enhanced membrane flux recovery ratio from 64.5 to 76%. Furthermore, the inorganic particles presence in PES membrane also improved the tensile strength of membrane up to 128 Mpa.
