Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) have been successfully synthesized from waste lignin via carbonization and base activation. The effect of base activation on lignin transformation to carbon nanoparticles was investigated. The physicochemical properties of CNPs were comprehensively characterized through a Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Surface area and pore analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. The results revealed that the condition using 5 wt% of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and carbonization at 700°C on the N2 atmosphere exhibited the highly porous structure of carbon nanoparticles. In conclusion, the NaOH-treated CNPs led to the production of high specific surface areas and high micropore volumes.

Identifying cues to contagious disease is critical for effectively tracking and defending against interpersonal infection threats. People hold lay beliefs about the types of sensory information most relevant for identifying whether others are sick with transmissible illnesses. Are these beliefs universal, or do they vary along cultural and ecological dimensions? Participants in 58 countries (N = 19,217) judged how effective, and how likely they were to use, cues involving each of the five major sensory modalities in an imagined social interaction during a flu outbreak. Belief patterns were strongly consistent across countries (sight > audition > touch > smell > taste), suggesting a largely universal conceptualization of the role of sensory information for interpersonal respiratory disease detection. Results also support a safe senses hypothesis, with perceivers reporting that they would use senses that function at a distance—and thus reduce pathogen transmission risk—more than would be expected given participants’ beliefs as to the efficacy of these senses for disease detection. Where societal variation did emerge, it was captured by a cohesive set of socio-ecological factors, including human development, latitude, pathogen prevalence, and population density. Together, these findings reveal a shared lens through which contagious respiratory disease is assessed, one that prioritizes minimizing risk to perceivers, and may offer leverage for designing interventions to improve public health. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

Safety is one of the most crucial problems faced by the lithium-ion battery (LIBs) industry. In this work, we propose a strategy to avoid overcharging of a battery via the application of a solid-state combined cathode. The goal of this research is to produce LIBs with overcharge self-regulation capabilities. In order to achieve self-regulation functionality, 1,4-di-tert-butyl-2,5-dimethoxybenzene (DBB) is added to as-synthesized LiFePO4, post synthesis. DBB has a trigger voltage of 3.9 V. When this voltage is reached, DBB forms a reduced ion that is released into the electrolyte from the cathode side. The DBB ion transfers to the anode side where it oxidizes and transfers back to the cathode side. This process forms a redox shuttle and consumes the extra charges keeping the voltage at a safe level (i.e. 3.9 V). The DBB redox shuttle protects the LiFePO4-based LIBs with working voltage between 3.4 and 3.5 V. The cycleability of assembled batteries is tested using an Arbin Tester. © 2017 Materials Research Society.

Among different efforts to increase the competitiveness of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in the energy storage marketplace, reducing the cost of production is a major effort by the LIB industry. This work proposes a synthesis method to decrease the production cost for LiFePO4, by synthesizing the material through an open-air environment solid state reaction. The lithium (Li)-ion battery is a member of the family of rechargeable batteries. In our approach, iron phosphate (FePO4) powder is preheated to eliminate moisture. Once dried, the FePO4is mixed with lithium acetate (CH3COOLi), and the mixture is heated in a tube furnace. The solid-state reaction is conducted in an open-air environment. In order to minimize the oxidation of the formed LiFePO4, a modified tube reaction vessel is utilized during synthesis. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) are used to characterize the crystal structure and chemical composition of the synthesized material. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization shows the grain size of the formed LiFePO4 to be in the range of 200 nm to 600 nm. Cycling testing of fabricated battery cells using the synthesized LiFePO4 is done using an Arbin Tester. © 2017 Materials Research Society.

Metaheuristic algorithms have provided efficient tools to designers by which it became possible to determine the optimum solutions of optimization problems encountered in several fields such as engineering, finance and computation. Generally metaheuristics are based on metaphors that are taken from nature or some other processes. Recently, an optimization metaheuristic paradigm based on the social behavior of the crows, called crow search algorithm (CSA), has been proposed. The idea of CSA is motivated from the storing process of the excess food in hiding places then restoring it in the necessary time. The CSA has many favorable characteristics, such as ease of implementation, the need to adjust only a few parameters, a favorable balance between search diversification and intensification, and fast convergence and high sensitivity. However, to enhance the performance of the standard CSA approach, this paper proposes to tune the control parameters using population diversity information and normal (Gaussian) probability distribution function. Loney's solenoid benchmark and circular antenna array design problems are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the conventional CSA and the proposed variant. Simulation results and comparisons with the CSA demonstrated that the performance of the proposed MCSA approach is promising in electromagnetics optimization. © 2018 IEEE.

Carbon dioxide-Bulk Energy Storage (CO2-BES) is a bulk energy storage technology that uses carbon dioxide (CO2) in sedimentary basin geothermal resources to time-shift electricity production. Here, we investigated how the charging and discharging cycles affect the power storage capacity and power output capacity of a CO2-BES facility. We simulated the operation of CO2-BES with seven different operating cycles for fourteen years. Our results suggest that continuous charging and discharging cycles do not change the rate of heat depletion of the geothermal resource. But the power storage capacity and the power output capacity are affected because they rely on the magnitude of the overpressure. If, in a cycle, the duration of electricity dispatch is greater than the duration of electricity storage, overpressure may eventually deplete and a CO2-BES facility may cease to be operational. If idle periods where electricity is neither charged nor discharged are included in the cycle, there is a small increase in power output capacity and a small decrease in power storage capacity. In general, if electricity is dispatched and stored for equal amounts of time, the duration of dispatch/storage and of the idle period does not affect the power output capacity or the power storage capacity. As a result, as long as the cycles consist of equivalent charging and discharging durations throughout the lifetime of the facility, the length of those durations and frequency of idle periods could be based on financial incentives (e.g., diurnal variations in electricity prices), rather than process-level factors like the potential for heat or pressure depletion. © 2018 GHGT 2018 - 14th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies. Modern U.S. dairies use antibiotics primarily for disease treatment and prevention. Consequently, antibiotic residues, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) present in dairy manure may potentially enter the environment and contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance (AR). Working cooperatively with 11 production dairies in three states (NY, PA, MD) our objective is to investigate the efficacy of existing on-farm manure management practices (e.g. long-term storage, composting, anaerobic digestion, etc.) at mitigating these potential contaminants. At each farm manure system performance is being assesses, antibiotic usage is being tracked, and manure samples are being collected at roughly 6-week intervals over 2-years pre- and post-each treatment step of the various manure handling systems. Samples are being analyzed for tetracycline, sulfonamide and macrolide antibiotic residues. Additionally, using culturing techniques and qPCR, ARB in manure solids before and after treatment are being quantified to study the effectiveness of bedding recovery systems at mitigating ARB pathogens. Select samples are also being analyzed for their diversity and abundance of ARGs. Preliminary data shows variable mitigation potentials of the different manure handling systems and is improving our understanding of the fate of these potential contaminants in dairy manures. As the project advances the efficacy of specific treatment systems to mitigate AR will be tested and knowledge on the fate of AR in dairy manure management systems will be extended to the dairy industry.
