This paper discusses the development of urban forest areas in eastern Jakarta to encourage sustainable urban development and socio-economic environment balance. This research aims to calculate the urban forest area needs in sub-district of Makasar, Ciracas and Cakung sub-districts, East Jakarta. The method used is to calculate index of urban forest area requirement (Indeks Luas Hutan Kota / ILHK) with Marshal Edgewarth method approach. The potential land mapping using Landsat-TM satellite image data is further processed through spatial allasis using Geographic Information System (GIS). The results of this research indicate the existence of sufficient land potential and can function ecologically as urban forests, and able to be a driver for sustainable urban development.

Applicability of zirconium loaded okara in the removal and recovery of phosphorus from municipal wastewater

Recently, there is a new trend to consider wastewater as a precious resource. Since phosphorus is a limited non-renewable element, and MAP (Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate - MgNH4PO4.6H2O) is a valuable slow-release fertilizer, the recovery of phosphorous as MAP has received special attention from scientists all over the world. However, the application of this process with municipal wastewater is still a challenge, due to low concentration of phosphorus and high volume of municipal wastewater. This study investigates the potential of reclaiming MAP from municipal wastewater by combination of adsorption and crystallization. Soybean milk residue (okara) was loaded with Zirconium (Zr) to prepare the adsorbent (ZLO). Adsorption and desorption experiments were conducted in a semi-pilot scale ZLO packed colum system. Effects of P: N: Mg molar ratios, chemical sources and temperature on the formation of MAP were examined in an attempt to identify the optimal crystallization conditions. The attained precipitate was characterized using XRD, SEM, FTIR techniques. It was found that the ZLO packed column adsorption-desorption system could pre-concentrate phosphorus from municipal wastewater up to 28.36 times, fitting well the minimum requirement (50 mg P/L) for the economical MAP recovery. Up to 95.19% of dissolved phosphorus in desorption solution was recovered at pH = 9, Mg: N: P molar ratio = 2:2:1, using a combination of MgCl2.6H2O and NH4Cl. The harvested MAP exhibited high purity (92.59%), high P-availability (89% by mass), and extremely low levels of heavy metals. The results prove that it is viable to recover MAP from municipal wastewater by employing ZLO as adsorbent, followed by crystallization. This paves the way for mining phosphorus from municipal wastewater and reducing okara as an agricultural byproduct in a green way.

Restoration of degraded drylands is urgently needed to mitigate climate change, reverse desertification and secure livelihoods for the two billion people who live in these areas. Bold global targets have been set for dryland restoration to restore millions of hectares of degraded land. These targets have been questioned as overly ambitious, but without a global evaluation of successes and failures it is impossible to gauge feasibility. Here we examine restoration seeding outcomes across 174 sites on six continents, encompassing 594,065 observations of 671 plant species. Our findings suggest reasons for optimism. Seeding had a positive impact on species presence: in almost a third of all treatments, 100% of species seeded were growing at first monitoring. However, dryland restoration is risky: 17% of projects failed, with no establishment of any seeded species, and consistent declines were found in seeded species as projects matured. Across projects, higher seeding rates and larger seed sizes resulted in a greater probability of recruitment, with further influences on species success including site aridity, taxonomic identity and species life form. Our findings suggest that investigations examining these predictive factors will yield more effective and informed restoration decision-making.

Effects of the alkali-cosolvent (dimethyl sulfoxide, DMSO) pre-treatment of softwood bleached kraft pulp (SwBKP) on the handsheet properties were investigated. In order to evaluate the effect of DMSO addition ratio in the DMSO-water solvent system, the DMSO ratio was varied from 0% to 70% and NaOH solution concentration was adjusted to 13% (w/w). In addition, the concentration of NaOH solution was varied from 0% to 13% at DMSO-water solvent (50:50) in order to evaluate the effect of NaOH soultion concentration. It was found that bulk of handsheet was increased with increasing the addition ratio of DMSO. Also, the addition of DMSO reduced the minimal concentration of NaOH solution to obtain the maximum handsheet bulk. On the other hand, paper strength was decreased with increasing the addition ratio of DMSO during the alkali swelling while no distinct effect of optical properties on handsheets was found.

Evaluation of low-temperature cooking of paper mulberry bast fiber with potassium based cooking chemicals

This study was conducted to investigate the efficiency of low-temperature cooking of paper mulberry using KOH, which is one of main components of the Korean traditional pulping chemicals. Cooking of paper mulberry bast was performed at various KOH or NaOH concentrations at low temperature (100°C and 120°C). Then, changes in pulping characteristics were evaluated in terms of Kappa number, pulping yield, viscosity of pulp and the degree of polymerization (DP) of cellulose. It was found that the paper mulberry bast fiber having a high molecular weight cellulose can be produced by a low-temperature cooking with KOH. Delignification and screening yield of paper mulberry bast fibers with the low-temperature KOH cooking were similar with that with the low-temperature NaOH cooking. However, cooking with KOH could produce the bast fibers with higher DP of cellulose than that with NaOH.

Effects of pre-treatment with low concentration alkali-urea on beating properties of SwBKP

Effects of low concentration alkali-cosolvent swelling pre-treatment on beating characteristics of softwood bleached kraft pulp (SwBKP) fibers was investigated. Urea was applied as a cosolvent. When the pulp was swollen at a low concentration below 2% (based on the oven-dried pulp), the weight loss was below 1%. NaOH treatment below 2% concentration could improve the swelling of SwBKP. Addition of urea with NaOH solution promoted the swelling. In addition, low concentration NaOH-urea pre-treatment reduced the beating time to reach a certain level of beating degree. Lowest freeness level was obtained when SwBKP was treated with 1% NaOH while highest fibrillation level was obtained at 2% NaOH and 1% urea. It could be concluded that grinding efficiency could be improved by the low concentration alkali-cosolvent swelling while optimization for the pre-treatment is necessary.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of molecular weight and degree of substitution of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on the grinding characteristics of hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP) during MFC production. CMCs having different molecular weights and degree of substitution were added into the pulp stock before grinding, and then the fibrillation and morphological properties of HwBKP during grinding were analyzed. The result showed that CMC contributed to improvement in grinding of HwB-KP. Fibrillation factors including fibril area, water retention value, and pulp slurry viscosity were increased with CMC addition. It is speculated that CMC improved fibrillation of HwBKP during grinding because CMC acted as a lubricant and/or a thickener. The CMC with a high molecular weight showed improved grinding characteristics while a distinct effect of degree of substitution of CMC was not observed.
