Public participation in a watershed planning process involves reaching out to social groups with very diverse opinions and perceptions about environmental issues. Using responses to a nationwide survey of public attitudes and perceptions related to water issues, we examined the effects of socio-demographic and residence characteristics on opinions about water quality, agricultural and urban pollution sources, and nutrients and pathogen pollution issues in the southern United States. Significant differences were identified among respondents of different age groups, genders, and educational levels. Opinions also differed significantly among urban and rural respondents and between states. These results can be used by state and local agencies, universities, and extension services involved in the design of collaborative watershed management processes and water resource educational efforts. In this paper a model based on transport equations is proposed to study the weldability of low alloy ferritic steels T/P23 and T/P24. The model was numerically implemented by using the finite volume method (FVM) in an open source computational code to simulate the influence of the heat input, base metal thickness and preheating temperature on the thermal evolution and the cooling rate during the welding process. Meanwhile, it was possible to evaluate qualitatively the microstructure at the heat affected zone (HAZ) of these steels when a single weld bead was deposited on their surface and calculate the maximum hardness reached at this region. A double-ellipsoid heat source model for power density distribution was used in order to obtain a good estimate of the cooling rate and evolution of the fusion zone (FZ). The results are discussed and good agreement between experimental and simulated results was obtained for temperature distribution.

Assessment of hydrological safety of Mae Sruai Dam, Thailand

Mae Sruai Dam was completed in 2003; it was built across Mae Sruai river in Chaing Rai province, Thailand. This study is done to assess the hydrological safety aspect of the dam for spillway adequacy of the dam to accommodate probable maximum flood inflow (PMF). The hydrological assessment was done by estimating the probable maximum precipitation (PMP) over Mae Sruai River Basin. The two approaches of PMP estimates namely (1) statistical approach and (2) storm maximization and transposition approach were adopted to calculate the 1-day, 2-day and 3-day PMPs. The 1-day PMP of the two approaches were compared with the regional 1-day PMP of Mekong River Basin estimated by U.S. Weather Bureau and U.S. Corps of Engineers in 1970. From the comparison, the storm maximization and transposition approach was finally selected and the 1-day, 2-day and 3-day PMPs were transformed to the continuous 4-day PMP by a regional approach. The HEC-HMS model was applied to transform PMP to PMF and to route the PMF through the reservoir to check if dam-crest had flow overtopping. The continuous 4-day PMP was transformed to PMF with peak reservoir inflow discharge of 1,013 m3/s and corresponding peak outflow of 886 m3/s. This outflow was less than the design spillway capacity of 1,160 m3/s. Thus, the dam safety in hydrological aspect was assured. Furthermore, flood routing study in the flood plain downstream of the dam indicated that flooding in Mae Sruai District floodplain especially in urbanized area would occur due to PMF inflow and hence flood control measures should be adopted.

Based on the stress induced void theory, three kinds of narrow-wide two-layer copper interconnection structure with dummy via in M1 were designed and put under different high temperature conditions for test. Under the action of high temperature, influence of dummy vias in lower layer metal (M1) on the failure phenomenon of the interconnect structure was analyzed. The result shows, adding dummy via in M1 can effectively improve the SIV performance of copper interconnection. Based on this, a more accurate equation was put forward to describe the behavior of the vacancy in the structure with dummy via spreading from the diffusion source to the accumulation.

Organic amendments and earthworm addition improve properties of nonacidic mine tailings

In many mined areas, lack of topsoil limits conversion of disturbed landscapes to former or other productive uses. We examined the use of biosolids (10 or 20% by dry mass), with or without sawdust, pulp sludge, and the contribution of an earthworm species (Dendrobaena veneta) to improve the properties of nonacidic mine tailings. Pulp sludge more rapidly immobilized excessive NH 4 + concentrations from biosolids early in the study;however, total mineral N concentrations were similar in pulp sludge and sawdust treatments by week 29. Although NO 3 - -N concentrations were generally greater in treatments with earthworms, these trends were not statistically significant (P>0.05). In general, Bray P concentrations were greater in the presence of earthworms. Soil thin sections showed that earthworms mixed organic residues into elongated spherical units within mine tailings. Organic residues in combination with earthworm addition may improve the chemical and microstructural properties of non-acidic mine tailings, producing a substrate conducive for plant establishment. © 2012 P. Increasing concentrations of selenium oxoanions in the environment are placing many animals at risk for reproduction failure and deformities. The understanding of binding mechanisms of selenium oxoanions to iron and manganese based oxide minerals could lead to enhanced understanding of selenium mobility in the environment. In this study, the binding mechanisms of selenium oxoanions, selenite and selenate, to non microwave-assisted and microwave-assisted synthetic Fe3O4, Mn3O4. and MnFe2O4 nanomaterials were investigated through the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy studies revealed the oxidation state of selenite and selenate remains the same after binding occurs to all nanomaterials in pH 2, 4, or 6 environments. The binding modes of selenite and selenate were determined to be bidentate binuclear through use of Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and were independent of nanomaterials, synthetic technique, and pH. © 2012 Materials Research Society.

The aim of this study was to investigate the utilization of a recycled rayon waste-kapok mixture as an oil sorbent for the removal of diesel and motor oil. The oil-sorption capacity of the materials under static conditions was evaluated. The results show the high sorption capacity of the recycled rayon waste-kapok mixture for both diesel and motor oil after 15 minutes (14.30 g of oil/g of sorbent for diesel oil and 24.17 g of oil/g of sorbent for motor oil) and after 24 hours (15.30 g of oil/g of sorbent for diesel oil and 25.05 g of oil/g of sorbent for motor oil). It can be concluded that RRWK, which can be produced by utilizing industrial waste, is an effective low cost, environmentally friendly oil sorbent with comparable performance to commercial products.

Professionalism, which includes engineering ethics, is recognized as a valued topic in industry and education but it is difficult to teach and assess. This paper presents a web-based professional responsibility instrument and accompanying rubric, which is used to assess student understanding and skillinanalyzing areas of strength and opportunity surrounding a professional responsibility issue associated with the student's design project. Students completing the assessment most frequently rated work competence asboth highly important and an area of team strength while issues of sustainability were least frequently cited. The scored results of this assessment revealed that students were moderately effective at relating issues of professional responsibility tosituations within their projects as well asaddressing themin a responsible manner. In a post-assessment survey, students and faculty rated the assessment as somewhat accurate to mostly accurate. An interrater agreement study of the assessment showed that scorers were on average within one level of difference on the scoring rubric 97% of the time. Results of administering the assessment in a capstone course can be easily packaged and presented as part of a program accreditation self-study. © 2012 TEMPUS Publications.
