Integrated land management decisions require comprehensive sets of criteria in order to properly account for all managerial alternatives. Economic criteria have been used to evaluate possible alternatives in most cases. However, it is important to consider the broadest possible range of social, economic and environmental criteria. This paper describes an integrated framework for land management planning at different spatial scales, comprising watershed, sub-watershed and land-unit levels. The structure includes four elements: (1) application of the strategic land management planning approach using the Delphi method and group decision analysis at sub-w atershed scales, (2) identification of decision criteria at the land unit scale using socio-economic analysis and hydrologic modelling, (3) multi-criteria decision analysis of different alternatives, and (4) multi-stakeholder alternative prioritization. The Kan watershed north of Tehran, Iran, was selected as a case study. The major objective of this research is to integrate quantitative and qualitative decision criteria for planning purposes. This approach can be adapted to prioritize a w ide variety of land and water resources management decisions in similar watersheds.

The feasibility for simultaneous local fresh water oleaginous algae cultivation and wastewater nitrogen removal were discussed in this study. The operation factors including illu- mination intensities, carbon source, initial nitrogen source, and retention time were fixed. The results indicated that the algae biomass increased from 28.3 mg/L to 254 mg/L at the 7th day. The oil weight increased from 5.75 mg/L to 85.34 mg/L at the 7th day. The percentage of algae oil increased from 20.4 % to 33.6 %, or by 13.2 %. The first-order equation was found to be the excellent fit model for describing the growth of algae biomass and production of oil content. The values of growth rate constant of algae and production rate constant were 0.3095 1/day and 0.3738 1/day, respectively. The value of production rate constant was about 1.2 times as that of the value of growth rate constant of algae, indicating an unbalance growth of algae biomass and oil content. The removal efficiency for ammonia nitrogen and phosphate was 84.8 % and 36.2 %, respectively.

User localization is one of the key technologies for mobile robots to successfully interact with humans. Among various localization methods using radio frequency (RF) signals, time of arrival (TOA) based localization is popular since the target coordinates can be directly calculated from the accurate range measurements. In complex indoor environment, however, RF ranging-based localization is quite challenging since the range measurements suffer not only from signal noise but also from signal blockages and reflections. A set of range measurements taken in complex indoor environment verifies that almost all measurements are non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ranges which have striking difference to the line-of-sight (LOS) distances. These NLOS range measurements make severe degradation in the accuracy of trilateration based localizations if used without any compensation. In this paper we propose a particle filter-based localization algorithm which utilizes indoor geometry from a given map to estimate the NLOS signal path and compensates for the range measurements. The algorithm is verified with experiments performed in real indoor environments.

Although recent construction of tailings dams has dramatically decreased solids discharge rates, pyrite-dominated polymetallic sulfide mine tailings persist as the primary in-stream substrate of the upper Rio Pilcomayo, a crucial water resource in the arid Southeastern Bolivian highlands. Rio Tarapaya is a primary tributary of the upper Rio Pilcomayo that drains Potosí, Bolivia, where intensive hard rock mining and ore processing has occurred for five centuries. In conjunction with standard water quality testing, field leach tests were performed on saturated sediment within the active channel as well as unsaturated sediment deposited on the banks of the Rio Tarapaya during highflow events. Results indicate that weathering of in-stream tailings is contributing to deleterious concentrations of various ecotoxic metals. Of special concern is the mobilization of metals and acidity with increases in water level, such as occurs at the onset of the rainy season. The highly seasonal, arid climate provides for long periods of mineral oxidation followed by large precipitation events which mobilize weathered oxidation products. The reactivity of the millions of tonnes of in-stream tailings in Rio Tarapaya suggests that the upper Rio Pilcomayo will remain severely degraded for the foreseeable future and remediation will continue to be a daunting task.

This paper presents a novel interval type-2 fuzzy logic control architecture for flocking system when the system has noisy sensor measurements. The traditional type-1 fuzzy logic controller (FLC) using precise type-1 fuzzy sets cannot fully model and handle the uncertainties of sensor data. However, type-2 FLC using type-2 fuzzy sets with a footprint of uncertainty (FOU) produces better performances under noisy environments. In this paper, therefore, we present a reactive control architecture for flocking algorithm that is based on interval type 2 FLC to implement the flocking behaviors consisting separation, obstacle avoidance, and velocity matching behaviors. The type-2 based control system could cope with the uncertainties of noisy sensor measurements and resulted in good performances that outperformed the type-1 FLC.
