Beroza and Bowman have developed the idea of p-value for confirmation of insecticide identity and for cleanup of insecticides at the nanogram level. In this paper the concept of using the p-value for determination of the parameters of solvent choice for quantitative liquid-liquid extraction of organo- phosphate pesticides from water are reported. The p-value method is modified to suit the present application. The p-value can be used to determine the quantitative extraction of the parent, oxon, and hydrolysis products of Diazinon, Parathion, Malathion, and Baytex. © 1972, American Chemical Society. Designing a building material with high fire resistance is crucial for minimizing the impact of catastrophic fire. Geopolymer, a new type of binder synthesized by the reaction of aluminosilicate sources with an alkaline solution, has been extensively studied as it offers comparable or even high durability when compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The concentration of the alkaline solution is one of the important factors that affect the durability;however, there is very little data on the heat resistance of geopolymer activated with potassium hydroxide. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effect of molarity of potassium hydroxide on the heat resistance of fly ash-slag blended geopolymer paste. The potassium hydroxide (10, 12, and 14 M) and sodium silicate solutions were prepared as activator solutions. The initial heat curing at 70 ºC for 24 h was applied. In addition, an OPC specimen was also prepared for comparison. After curing for 28 days, some specimens were exposed to high temperatures (500, 750, and 950 ºC). The compressive strength of unexposed and exposed geopolymer and OPC paste specimens was measured. The results showed that the increase of molarity of potassium hydroxide solution increased the heat resistance of geopolymer in terms of retained compressive strength. Moreover, the geopolymer specimens could maintain higher compressive strength than that of OPC paste when exposed to high temperatures up to 950 ºC. This is attributed to the mineral composition of geopolymer, which is different from OPC paste, as studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Since 2019, the world has suffered from the outbreak of the "Coronavirus Disease (COVID)-19 pandemic. This study used the principle of Ultraviolet (UV)-C disinfection to produce a mobile high-power UV-C sterilizer. It focused on combining intelligent control systems, human sensors, and Internet of Things (IoT) systems to carry out disinfection tasks in unmanned indoor spaces. Because of its mobile nature, the sterilizer could be moved at any time in various learning, research, and activity rooms for disinfection. In addition to manually controlling the sterilizer, a Wi-Fi or Narrowband (NB)-IoT-enabled remote control was provided to start the disinfection process. In order to prevent ultraviolet light from harming the human body, sensors were employed self-acting to detect the presence of people and turn off the ultraviolet light when people were detected in the area. At the same time, a camera on the sterilizer would capture an image and notify the relevant personnel through a LINE notification, to prevent the human body from being exposed to ultraviolet light, causing harm to the teachers and students on campus. During operation, voice broadcast reminders and a status indicator could provide information about the operation status. After disinfection, users could view the disinfection process through a mobile device application or a webpage, which would automatically notify relevant personnel of the disinfection status through a LINE notification. In this way, the disinfection progress could be updated at anytime, anywhere and the current disinfection status in the classroom could be displayed in real-time, allowing teachers and students on campus to carry out teaching and learning in a safe and secure environment. © The Author(s).

Silicon anodes offer high energy densities for next-generation lithium-ion batteries;however, their application is limited by severe volume expansion during cycling. Making silicon porous or nanostructured mitigates this expansion but often increases lithium inventory losses due to the inherent high surface area of nanomaterials. This study introduces a simple bottom-up process that overcomes this limitation. The approach relies on small silicon particles (-3), all while maintaining good processability. The resulting silicon-dominant anodes achieve remarkable stability in full pouch cells with NMC811 and LFP cathodes, retaining ~80% capacity for more than 400 cycles without pre-lithiation, graphite blending, or pre-cycling. © 2025, CC BY.

Due to the complexity of contemporary practice, top-tier structural engineering firms hold the master's degree as the minimum level of education for new hires. In addition, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recommends a master's degree or the equivalent of 30 credits beyond a bachelor's degree as part of the minimum body of knowledge for licensed professional engineers. Finally, students whose end goal is a career in professional practice have indicated a preference for graduate programs focused on design knowledge essential for the advancement of structural engineering practice. These needs provided the opportunity for the creation of a new professional master's program in structural engineering at Lehigh University. Launched in summer 2008, the program is led by a full-time professor of practice with industry design experience and guided by an executive advisory board, composed of representatives from all areas of the building design and construction profession. The hallmark of the 30-credit, 10-month program is a 9-credit, 3-course design project sequence in which student teams design a real-world structure from initial concept to final construction documents. An individual project assignment, as well as technical elective courses, allows students to tailor the program to their unique interests and career goals. A laboratory class provides hands-on learning of structural behavior. Interaction with industry leaders through seminars, field trips, and externships provides students ample opportunity to network with professionals and gain an understanding of their chosen industry. The commercial vessels activity have a big role to increase the flow of number of cargoes from a port to another port. However, the impact of these activities are the disposal of ballast water from port area to the destination port. The purpose of this research was to analyze the correlation of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and heavy metal which were contained inside the ballast water of commercial vessel towards in waters of the port of Tanjung Emas Semarang. The concentration of heavy metal either from commercial vessels or the waters in port area analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The result showed that the correlation of zooplankton and phytoplankton in the water ballast at commercial vessels have a medium correlation to zooplankton and phytoplankton in waters of Port of Tanjung Emas Semarang (PTES) were 48.9% and 58.3%. Correlation of heavy metal Cd, Zn, Cu, Zn and Pb in ballast water of commercial vessel toward each metal in waters of PTES area has a strong correlation in contribution were 76.7%, 75.6%, 71.4% and 73.8%. It showed us that the loading activity of commercial vessels in port are contributed towards the pollution in waters. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

Lack of employment opportunities contributes to the persistence of poverty throughout the world. At the same time, crowdsourced human computation can potentially provide work to large numbers of people, without imposing specialized skill requirements. In this study we investigate the feasibility of connecting people in rural areas to human computation employment with a pilot-scale project, and assess the way they use the income they receive to determine if this is an effective poverty-alleviation strategy. We find that workers in a rural Kenyan village are able to complete several example task types; using a simplified human computation platform called PulaCloud, they completed approximately 100,000 image classification tasks for a bioinformatics research project. The income they received was significantly more than that available from limited local employment options, and they spent it almost exclusively on basic needs, educational expenses, and productive investments, strongly suggesting that this can be an effective tool in the fight against poverty. We emphasize that this is not an aid-based approach to economic development; rather, workers are engaged as producers in the global knowledge economy and are paid for making contributions to scientific research.

This study examined the effect of Zn2+ ion substitution on ZnxMn(1-x) Fe2O4 nanoparticles (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) towards signal Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR). The co-precipitation method synthesised the nanoparticles at a temperature of 90°C. The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) results showed a polycrystalline structure with a crystallite size varied from 19.05 nm to 19.77 nm. In addition, as the Zn element increased in the ZnxMn(1-x)Fe2O4 nanoparticles, the degree of crystallinity increased by 21.72%, respectively. The optical properties of the nanoparticles ZnxMn(1-x) Fe2O4 indicate absorbance at wavelengths of 330.36–331.74 nm. The absorbance level increased as the Zn element decreased, resulting a direct optical gap of 3.47 eV and an indirect optical gap of 3.23 eV. The Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) curve in the SPR biosensor indicated a shift in the reflective angle of the Prism/Au/Air configuration, which is 47.78° on Prisma/Au/nanoparticle of Zn0.8Mn0.2Fe2O4/air by 50.75°, and the prism/Au/nanoparticle of Zn0.2Mn0.8Fe2 O4/air by 51.04°. The substitution of Zn ions in the compound Zn x Mn(1-x)Fe2O4 affects the resulting ATR curve. The shift in the SPR angle is caused by changes in the refractive index in each layer which is influenced by the concentration of each material which has an impact on the absorbance ability and photon reflectance. This research has the potential to continue with the testing of dielectric and magnetic properties, as well as special testing for biological analytes compatible with ZnxMn(1-x)Fe2O4 nanoparticles. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Dry-season sources of riverine sediment from the tropical mixed urban-agricultural watershed of the Mun River Basin in northeastern Thailand

Northeastern(NE) Thailand is well recognized as the land for rice cropping and consequently, it is potentially contaminated with chemicals from soil fertilization, pest/weed control, and urban *** Mun River basin in NE Thailand principally is comprised of rice paddies and sedimentation in the river has been pronounced, but the studies on sediment source identification are limited. The current study aims to identify sediment sources in the Mun River basin and discuss possible impacts on ecosystems attributed to exposure to polluted sediment. The assessment relies upon physicochemical properties and heavy metal contents(iron(Fe), manganese(Mn), copper(Cu), chromium(Cr), nickel(Ni),and Zinc(Zn)) in the fine-grained sediment(<63 μm) taken from the Mun River basin and the Chi River in the dry season of 2020-2021. The findings revealed that the heavy metals in the sediment had not accumulated to levels of concern. Most sediment was from natural sources, including Fe-and Mn-rich sediment, Cr-dominant sediment, and Ni-and Cu-rich sediment. Fe-and Zn-rich sediment was, however, found in the urban watershed of Lam Ta Klong, and it could originate from mixed urban sources. Ferich sediment was predominant in the Mun River basin, which and could be a significant sink and source of toxic elements from agricultural and urban discharges. It is suggested that the toxic compounds in the sediment should be consistently monitored, whereas ecological and health risk assessment should be focused on the mobile forms.

Heterogeneous photocatalytic reaction has been generally applied for degradation of toxic *** of a compound using the same kind of catalyst that was synthesized differently are commonly found in ***,the reported degradation intermediates are normally *** issue is especially important for the degradation of toxic compounds because intermediates may be more toxic than their parent compounds and understanding the reason is necessary if appropriate catalysts are to be *** work systematically compares the photocatalytic degradation of diuron,a toxic recalcitrant herbicide,on two forms of zinc oxide(ZnO),i.e.,conventional particles with zinc-and oxygen-terminated polar surfaces as the dominating planes,and nanorods with mixed-terminated nonpolar *** and theoretical results indicate that both the rate of reaction and the degradation pathway depend on the adsorption configuration of diuron onto the *** molecules adsorb in different alignments on the two surfaces,contributing to the formation of different degradation *** the aliphatic and aromatic sides of diuron adsorb on the polar surfaces simultaneously,leading to an attack by hydroxyl radicals from both *** the other hand,on the mixed-terminated surface,only the aliphatic part adsorbs and is *** exposed surface is therefore the key factor controlling the degradation *** diuron degradation on ZnO,a catalyst confined tomixed-terminated surfaces,i.e.,ZnO nanorods,is more desirable,as it avoids the formation of intermediates with potent phytotoxicity and cytogenotoxicity.
