This study focuses on the investigation of the influence of CO2 concentration on the carbonation process in cementitious paste using ordinary Portlandite cement and limestone-calcined clay cement, specifically on the water content distribution. Employing single-sided nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for water profiling, we revealed that the water content of fine pores (interlayer space and gel pores) was consistent at the carbonation front under accelerated carbonation processes with CO2 concentrations of 5% and 1%, demonstrating the plugging effect where fine pore water governs the carbonation progress. This effect was absent under natural carbonation conditions because of the carbonation process was slower than drying. It was confirmed that the rate-determining mechanisms of natural and accelerated carbonation with CO2 concentrations greater than 1% were different. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Eleven sesquiterpenes (1–11), with the majority of them decorated with either a furan or a γ-lactone moiety in their carbocycle, were isolated from an organic extract of the marine sponge Lamellodysidea herbacea collected from the coral reefs in the vicinity of Thuwal in Saudi Arabia. Two of the isolated metabolites (1 and 2) are not previously described, whereas the linear furanosesquiterpene 11 is reported for the first time from a natural source. The structures and the relative configurations of the isolated metabolites have been determined through extensive analysis of their NMR and MS data. Compounds 1–11 were evaluated for their antibacterial and antioxidant activity but did not display any noteworthy activity. © 2025 Phytochemical Society of Europe

Cassava rhizome (CR) was torrefied to provide superior solid fuel quality for further gasification process. The torrefaction was carried out in the absence of oxygen at 220, 240, 260, and 280°C with a fixed residence time. Solid fuel after torrefaction has a higher calorific value from that of reduced volatile matters. The optimum energy yield of torrefied CR is 88.16% at 260°C. The heating value of 20.86 MJ/kg for a torrefied product can be achieved compared to 15.37 MJ/kg for untreated CR. The subsequent gasification of torrefied CR at temperature of 800°C yielded the highest gas product of 65 wt.%. The carbon and hydrogen conversions into CO and H2 were 14.28% and 29.95%, respectively. Synthesis gas (syngas) from the conversion maintained the H2/CO ratio of around 2-2.50, which is suitable for the Fischer-Tropsch process or can be used as the feedstock for petrochemical industry. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2020.

Abstract Abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) poses global challenges for marine ecosystems as they destroy algal forests, the largest oceanic carbon dioxide sinks. Biodegradable polybutylene succinate (PBS), which has a tensile toughness similar to that of nylon, has been suggested as a potential fishing-gear material. However, its slow degradation in the marine environment and limited draping characteristics need to be addressed before it can be used in environmentally friendly fishing gear. Inspired by the mussel byssus, a mussel-thread-like holdfast known for its stiff yet extensible mechanical properties, we developed fishing gear using a mussel-byssus-mimetic fiber (artificial byssus, AB) structure. The AB was composed of poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene terephthalate) (PBAT) fibers with favorable draping characteristics coated with mechanically resilient and PBS, which demonstrated sufficient toughness and draping properties for use in fishing gear. The AB may serve as fishing-gear material capable of mitigating ALDFG issues, given its marine degradability by microbial strains that degrade PBS and PBAT. Furthermore, it could serve as a substrate for ocean afforestation, given the improved settlement and growth of seaweed spores (Pyropia yezoensis) on AB. Overall, AB-based fishing gear is expected to enhance macroalgal forest conservation and expansion, and facilitate marine carbon capture through marine afforestation. © 2023, The Authors. The industry developed rapidly since the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century. The side effect of industrial development was a large amount of non-hazardous waste and hazardous waste. All of this waste must be managed properly so that environmental sustainability is maintained and does not cause harm or problems to the community. A review will be conducted from various research journals in various countries and the types of waste also vary, namely plastic, pulp and paper industry waste, and other solid waste. Resources recovery of calcium and phosphates from respective green mussel shells and bovine bones by calcination and chemically extracting are viable precursors for carbonate-rich apatite biomedical material applications. Because of their high osteoconductivity, carbonate-rich apatite bioceramics are being studied intensively for synthetic bone transplants. In the study, powder processing routes of calcination and following chemical dissolution in MgCl₂ and H₂SO₄ were each for recovering calcium of mussel shells and phosphate of bovine bones yielding a crystal-forming solution feedstock for use in microwave-irradiated synthesis. FTIR spectra and XRD patterns validated the crystallinity and phase identification for as-synthesized powders. As a result, the presence of CO₃, PO₄^3-, and OH- bands in carbonate-calcium phosphate complexes were present in FTIR spectra. According to the XRD Rietveld method, the as-synthesized powder product contained brushite, carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA), calcite, and gypsum. The recoverable CHA crystallites' size was 40 nm. This present study demonstrated that microwave irradiation synthesis of CHA powder with calcium and phosphates derived from mussel shells and bovine bones is the potential to yield a large amount of CHA for bioceramics and would aid in the design of a powder processing step for preparing the CHA powder precursor in biomedical applications. © 2024

The Eastern Mediterranean is a unique region for air pollution because it is the crossroads between three continents exchanging air pollution. Here, we investigated urban particulate matter (PM) carbonaceous and water-soluble ions in Amman, Jordan. The PM2.5 total carbon (TC) annual mean was 7.6±3.6 µg/m3 (organic carbon (OC) 5.9±2.8 µg/m3 and elemental carbon (EC) 1.7±1.1 µg/m3), which was about 16.3% of the PM2.5. The PM10 TC annual mean was 8.4±3.9 µg/m3 (OC 6.5 ± 3.1 µg/m3 and elemental carbon (EC) 11.9±1.1µg/m3), about 13.3% of the PM10. The PM2.5 total water-soluble ions annual mean was 7.9±1.9 µg/m3 (about 16.9%), and that of the PM10 was 10.1±2.8 µg/m3 (about 16.0%). The minor ions (F-, NO2-, Br-, and PO43-) constituted less than 1% in the PM fractions. The significant fraction was for SO42- (PM2.5 4.7±1.6 µg/m3 (10.0%) and PM10 5.3±1.9 µg/m3 (8.3%)). The NH4+ had higher amounts of PM2.5 (1.3±0.6 µg/m3;2.7%) than that PM10 (0.9±0.4 µg/m3;1.4%). During sand and dust storm (SDS) events, TC, Cl-, and NO3- were doubled in PM, SO42- did not increase significantly, and NH4+ slightly decreased. Regression analysis revealed: (1) carbonaceous aerosols come equally from primary and secondary sources, (2) about 50% of the OC came from non-combustion sources, (3) traffic emissions dominate the PM, (4) agricultural sources have a negligible effect, (5) SO42- is completely neutralized by NH4+ in the PM2.5 but there could be additional reactions involved in the PM10, and (6) (NH4)2SO4, was the major species formed by SO42-and NH4+ instead of NH4HSO4. © 2024, The Authors. This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of algal-based membrane bioreactors (AMBRs) and their potential for removing hazardous and toxic contaminants from wastewater. Through an identification of contaminant types and sources, as well as an explanation of AMBR operating principles, this study sheds light on the promising capabilities of AMBRs in eliminating pollutants like nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter, while generating valuable biomass and energy. However, challenges and limitations, such as the need for process optimization and the risk of algal-bacterial imbalance, have been identified. To overcome these obstacles, strategies like mixed cultures and bioaugmentation techniques have been proposed. Furthermore, this study explores the wider applications of AMBRs beyond wastewater treatment, including the production of value-added products and the removal of emerging contaminants. The findings underscore the significance of factors such as appropriate algal-bacterial consortia selection, hydraulic and organic loading rate optimization, and environmental factor control for the success of AMBRs. A comprehensive understanding of these challenges and opportunities can pave the way for more efficient and effective wastewater treatment processes, which are crucial for safeguarding public health and the environment. © 2023

Lead-acid battery industries in Bangladesh have proliferated in urban areas, leading to the release of significant amounts of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and metalloids into the environment. This study aimed to assess the spatial distribution, sources, contamination status, and ecological risks in agricultural soils, vegetables, and fruits near these industries. Soil samples were collected from four sites at varying distances (0 m, 100 m, 250 m, and 500 m) around three lead-acid battery industries (AA, AB, and AC) in Dhaka and Gazipur Districts during June-July 2020. The concentrations of the Pb, As, Cd and Zn in agricultural soils were ranged between 8.40–116.61, 8.99–28.21, 0.03–1.28, and 25.38–68.72 mg/kg, respectively. The concentrations of Pb, As, and Cd were found to be considerably higher than background levels across all industries, with a gradual decrease in PTE concentrations from 0 m to 500 m. The contamination factor indicated high to moderate contamination in agricultural soils by As, Cd, and Pb, and low contamination by Zn. pollution load index, modified contamination degree, and nemerow comprehensive index revealed varying pollution levels in the vicinity of the industries, with AA and AB showing higher pollution compared to AC. The individual risk factors demonstrated significant risks associated with Cd and As exposure, while Pb and Zn posed lower risks. The potential ecological risk index indicated considerable ecological risk for AA (risk index = 192.41), moderate risk for AB (risk index = 111.80), AC (risk index = 65.08), respectively. Correlation and principal component analysis revealed strong positive associations (p < 0.01) among the chemical parameters and potentially toxic elements in soils, and demonstrated the lead-acid battery industry as the primary contamination source in the studied areas. Contextualising Landscape Ecology in Wildlife and Forest Conservation in India: a Review

Biodiversity values frequently encounter challenges from developmental needs despite having strong forest and wildlife laws in developing countries like India. Landscape ecology offers the relevant scientific backstopping and sophisticated tools to support conservation of several species. To aid the future development of landscape ecology in India within current and emerging contexts, we reviewed the spatio-temporal and thematic trends in the published research involving forest and wildlife conservation. Spatial modelling and land use land cover change assessments have been well established conceptually and methodologically, but an increase in studies involving impact of climate change on species habitat suitability is comparatively very recent. Thematic research gaps in this field include impact of scale on ecological processes, and uncertainty and error quantification in modelling. Dedicated studies on characterisation of biodiversity and its dynamics in biogeographic transition zones can scientifically inform management of forest and wildlife. The review of 494 peer-reviewed articles published between 1994 and 2021 showed an increase in published research on landscape ecology over time. We found that the studies were dominated by the ‘Pattern–Process–Scale’ related questions and spatially clustered in the Western Ghats (biodiversity hotspot) and Uttarakhand state. Considerable research efforts are required in riverine and coastal ecosystems. Nevertheless, the increasing trend of research across themes and regions is a positive indicator of the growing role of landscape ecology in forest and wildlife management in India.
