One of the main parameters that determine the processing and utilization of coal mining is the quality of the coal. This research was conducted to determine the quality of coal based on proximate, sulfur, and calorie analysis with ASTM standards. Coal sampling was carried out at three different layers at CV. Bara Mitra Kencana. In suture sample 1 with the basic results dry air Total moisture 22.08%, Ash 62.25%, Moisture in 7.48%, Volatile matter 23.91%, Total sulfur 0.8%, Fixed carbon 6.36%, Calorific Value 2155.77 KCal / Kg. In suture sample 2 with the basic results dry air Total humidity 14.64%, Ash 6.29%, Humidity 6.48%, Volatile 37.45%, total sulfur 0.37%, fixed carbon 49.78%, Calorific value 7336 KCal / Kg. Inseam sample 3 with the basic results dry air Total humidity 9.71%, ash 2.84%, humidity 4.57%, volatile material 41.87%, total sulfur 0.32%, fixed carbon 50.72%, Calorific value 8207 KCal / Kg. It can be concluded that seam 1 samples include very low-quality coals and seam 2 and seam 3 samples include high-quality coals. low has a low calorific value. Meanwhile, the effect of carbon shows that the lower the carbon content of coal, the lower the heating value of coal.

Light-induced Weyl semiconductor-to-metal transition mediated by Peierls instability

Elemental tellurium is a strongly spin-orbit coupled Peierls-distorted semiconductor whose band structure features topologically protected Weyl nodes. Using time-dependent density functional theory calculations, we show that impulsive optical excitation can be used to transiently control the amplitude of the Peierls distortion, realizing a mechanism to switch tellurium between three states: Weyl semiconductor, Weyl metal, and non-Weyl metal. Further, we present experimental evidence of this inverse Peierls distortion using time-resolved optical second harmonic generation measurements. These results provide a pathway to multifunctional ultrafast Weyl devices and introduce Peierls systems as viable hosts of light-induced topological transitions.

Desalination of Brackish Groundwater Using Self Regeneration Hybrid Ion Exchange and Reverse Osmosis System (Hsix-Ro)

The efficiency of novel hybrid self-regeneration ion exchange and reverse osmosis (HSIX-RO) system for the desalination of brackish groundwater was investigated. In the pre-treatment step for protecting RO membrane fouling, the traditional homogenized strong acid cation exchanger (Purolite C100) and shallow shell structured strong acid cation exchanger (Purolite SSTC65), were compared for their efficiency to remove hardness cations from brackish groundwater. The fixed-bed column study concluded that, C100 and SSTC65 can treat brackish water containing 250 mg/L Ca2+ and 10,000 mg/L NaCl at approximately 80 and 76 bed volumes (BVs), respectively. Studying the efficiency of RO system, it possesses % RO recovery of more than 70% at an optimized pressure of 120 psi. An upscale self-regeneration ion exchange and RO system, i.e., HSIX-RO which can be applied for pilot-scale study was proposed. This proposed study suggested that the HSIX-RO can be suited for desalination of brackish groundwater with minimum use of an additional salt and can be self-sustained using an automated control. Noted that the HSIX-RO system cannot effectively applied for neither groundwater (TDS 30,000 mg/L) contained high Ca2+ and Mg2+ due to low regeneration efficiency and short length service runs, respectively. © 2022, The Authors. Satellite-based spatial-statistical modeling of daily stream water temperatures at the CONUS scale

Stream temperature (ST) is a key driver of water quality and ecosystem health, and the analysis and forecasting thereof benefit from the availability of high spatiotemporal resolution ST datasets. However, such datasets are limited spatially and temporally across the CONUS, particularly for small, remote streams. Available models are limited in domain (regional), spatial resolution ( ≥ 10 km), temporal resolution (monthly), or a combination thereof. We address these limitations by developing a satellite remote sensing-based spatial-statistical model, TempEst 2 (“stream TEMPerature ESTimation, version 2”), to estimate daily mean and maximum temperatures at 1 km resolution for ungaged streams of any size across the CONUS. This contrasts with an earlier version, TempEst 1, which used a random forest algorithm at monthly resolution. TempEst 2 also improves over TempEst 1 in interpretability and computational efficiency. In TempEst 2, the streams used for model training and testing cover a wide range of urban and rural land uses, climates, and geographies. TempEst 2 requires minimal input data and tolerates sparse training gage networks, supporting generalization outside the CONUS. For CONUS applications, TempEst 2 is trained on 1,316 USGS ST gages. Quantitative performance impacts from locally-sparse gage networks are reported. Model performance is evaluated using cross-validation, walk-forward validation, and extrapolation validations over regions and elevation. TempEst 2 estimates daily mean temperatures with a median cross-validation gage RMSE of 2.0 °C, NSE of 0.91, and bias of 0.10%. TempEst 2 supports the development and analysis of high-resolution, large-domain ST datasets across the CONUS.

Early childhood is important for neurodevelopment, and exposure to endocrine disruptors such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates in this period may cause neurodevelopmental disorders and delays. The present study examined the association between exposure to mixtures of BPA and three metabolites of phthalates in early childhood and IQ at 5 years of age. The Mother and Children's environmental Health (MOCEH) study is a prospective birth cohort study conducted in Korea with 1751 pregnant women enrolled from 2006 to 2010. After excluding those without relevant data, 47 children were included in the final analysis. We measured children's urinary concentrations of metabolites of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (Bisphenol A, mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate, mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate and mono-(2-ethyl-5-butyl) phthalate) at ages of 24 and 36 months. We evaluated the children's IQ with the Korean Wechsler Intelligence Test at the age of 5 years. After adjusting for potential confounders, a multiple linear regression was conducted to examine the associations between individual endocrine-disrupting chemicals and the IQ of the children. Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression and quantile-based g-computation were used to assess the association between IQ at age 5 and exposure to mixtures of BPA and phthalates. In the single-chemical analyses, mono-(2-ethyl-5-butyl) phthalate exposure at 36 months was adversely associated with children's IQ (β = −4.93, 95% confidence interval (CI): -9.22, −0.64). In the WQS regression and quantile-based g-computation analyses, exposure to the mixture of BPA and phthalates was associated with lower IQ [β = −9.13 (P-value = 0.05) and β = −9.18 (P-value = 0.05), respectively]. The largest contributor to the overall association was exposure to mono-(2-ethyl-5-butyl) phthalate at 36 months. The linear lifecycle of concrete, from production through usage to disposal, highlights its status as one of the most carbon-, energy-, and resource-intensive processes in the industry. The development of life cycle assessment (LCA) models to quantify concrete’s embodied and buildings’ operational emissions is strongly influenced by the selection of the functional unit (FU) since it dictates the magnitude and significance of the environmental burdens from concrete and buildings' life span. The chosen FU should comprehensively capture the concrete's functionalities and construction parameters. Nonetheless, establishing a FU that encompasses spatial, temporal, and intensity aspects of cement/concrete and its applications remains a significant limitation in the practice of current LCA models. This study analyzed the FU influence on the environmental footprint of concrete samples with specific compressive strengths (material level) via LCA. The LCA was conducted in OneClick LCA using the environmental product declaration (EPD) provided by the software for each ready-mix concrete sample. From the LCA results, the C 30/37 concrete mix (lowest compressive strength) exhibited the lowest carbon footprint for all the environmental indicators when a volume-based FU was considered. In contrast, the results were more favorable for the C 65/70 concrete specimen when the compressive strength (28 curing days) was chosen because less cement is needed to achieve one MPa of strength. This behavior was also observed in the modeling of a column in a building, where the mixture with the highest compressive strength (C 65/70) showed the lowest environmental impact for all the indicators. However, this assessment does not represent the actual building system's footprint. Thus, regionally specific functional units need to be established, considering not just concrete functionalities but also national regulations, stakeholder needs, and local resource availability.

Biochar supported metal cobalt activated PAA to efficiently degrade CBZ: The important role of Co (IV) in the generation of peroxyacyl radicals

This study utilized biochar-supported transition metal cobalt as a model catalyst to activate peracetic acid (PAA) for carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation. The acetyl peroxyl radical (CH 3 (CO)OO•) was identified as the predominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for CBZ degradation in this system, with its generation primarily facilitated by the catalytic activation of PAA mediated by high-valent cobalt species [Co(IV)]. The generation of Co(IV) species occurs via PAA-mediated stepwise single-electron oxidation of Co(II). Comprehensive characterization techniques (SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS) demonstrated that cobalt-modified biochar (Co@BC 700°C ) exhibits a layered structure with increased surface area and numerous functional groups. The incorporation of cobalt simultaneously increases active site density and optimizes electron transfer efficiency within the BC. As a result, Co@BC 700°C activated PAA achieved efficient degradation of CBZ within 10 min under weakly acidic conditions. The comprehensive free radical investigation experiments collectively demonstrated that CH 3 (CO)OO• as the dominant reactive species driving CBZ degradation. Meanwhile, chemical trapping experiments confirmed that Co(IV) species significantly influence the degradation of CBZ, and the primary role of Co(IV) species is to mediate the generation of CH 3 (CO)OO• via electron transfer mechanisms. Furthermore, integrated toxicological assessments and circulation experiments verified the catalytic potential of Co@BC 700°C , demonstrating sustained removal efficiency in complex aqueous environments containing competitive anions and natural organic species. The results of this study provide innovative understanding of CH 3 (CO)OO• formation through Co(IV)-activated PAA catalysis, as well as a unique viewpoint on applying PAA-driven advanced oxidation technologies for wastewater treatment.

While the reduction of operational energy and associated emissions has been the focus of the building design community in recent decades, focus must now be given to reducing the upfront or embodied energy and emissions of buildings. Embodied energy and emissions are those associated with the extraction, manufacturing, transportation, and end-of-life of building materials and assemblies. The present study evaluates, using life cycle assessment, the "cradle-to-gate" embodied energy and embodied carbon of the Office and Apartment ASHRAE 90.1-2016 DOE Prototype Buildings. Results from this analysis show that on average, the office prototype buildings consumed 938 MJ/m2 (82.6 kBtu/ft2) of embodied energy and emitted 77.0 kg CO2e/m2(15.7 lb CO2e/ft2) of embodied carbon. The apartment prototype buildings consumed 1168 MJ/m2 (103 kBtu/ft2) of embodied energy and emitted 102 kg CO2e/m2 (20.9 lb CO2e/ft2) of embodied carbon on average. This study serves as a first step towards establishing reference building models for embodied carbon so that the building design community can realize a zero-carbon built environment by 2050. © 2020 Amer. Beyond typical flexible electronics, stimuli-responsive shape-reconfigurable electronics are great candidates for the next-generation miniaturized electronics, carrying out complex missions by morphing their geometry and transferring their bodies to the desired positions. To achieve shape-reconfigurable electronics, it is essential to give shape-programmability as well as high electrical conductivity for polymeric materials. However, this is difficult to achieve due to a trade-off relationship between the shape-reconfigurability and the electrical conductivity of polymer composites that embed conductive fillers. Herein, we introduced highly conductive and physical intelligence-encoded polymeric composites based on MXene/liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) bilayer (MLB), for shape-reconfigurable electronics performing on-demand and reversible 3D morphing and locomotion. The MLB demonstrated remarkable photo-/electro-thermally driven bending and twisting performance under near-infrared (NIR) light with 0.4 W cm-2 and voltage application of 3.5 V without delamination, originating from both high photothermal conversion efficiency and electrical conductivity of ~5,300 S cm-1. The MLB also proved structural durability after 1000 cycles of bending originating from the stable interface induced by hydrogen bonding between MXene and LCE. Macroscopic collective assembly of the MLBs enabled dynamic locomotion inspired by nature. Collectively assembled MLBs demonstrated crawling, rotating, jumping, and sling-shooting by engineering the symmetricity of assembled structure and introducing snap-through instability. © 2023, The Authors.
