Ice is one of the few substances on Earth that expands when it freezes. Consequently, this phase change causes damage to porous cementitious materials that absorb water and undergo freezethaw cycling. Inspired by nature, the objective of this work is to characterize biomimetic antifreeze polymers (BAPs) that explicitly mimic the behavior of antifreeze proteins (AFPs) and antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) naturally found in plants, fish, insects, and bacteria for use as a concrete additive. The ultimate goal of this work is to enhance the freeze-thaw durability of ordinary portland cement (OPC) concrete without the use of traditional air entraining agents (AEAs). This work will highlight recent research that has shown that small additions, less than 0.1% by wt. of cement, of BAPs that exhibit ice recrystallization inhibition (IRI) activity can mitigate freeze-thaw damage in OPC paste and concrete while entraining less than 3% air. © The authors.

Global climate change is considered an irreversible problem, which might directly or indirectly affect all the organisms and ecosystems on the earth and the world has to struggle with. Plants having no effective movement mechanism are the group that global climate change will affect the most. In order to minimize the species and population losses, it is important to estimate the changes in the available distribution areas of species and to ensure the migration mechanism, which the species will need, by the hand of humans. The present study aims to reveal how potential distribution areas of fir, which is among the significant tree species of Turkey and significant portion of global distribution of which is in Turkey, will change from an altitudinal aspect because of the climate change. The results achieved showed that, because of the effects of global climate change, the suitable distribution areas of Abies nordmanniana subsp. nordmanniana will significantly decrease especially at high altitudes and that suitable distribution areas of Abies nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani will reduce at altitudes higher than 1400 m but increase generally at the altitudes between 200 and 600 m. The growing use of synthetic chemical compounds/substances in vector control of mosquitoes, associated with their adverse effects on the environment and non-target organisms, has demanded the development of eco-friendly alternatives. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the larvicidal action of different cellulose microcrystalline (CMs) concentrations and investigate their toxicity mechanisms in Culex quinquefasciatus fourth instar larvae as a model species. Probit analysis revealed that the median lethal concentrations (LC50) for 24 h and 36 h exposure were 100 and 58.29 mg/L, respectively. We also showed that such concentrations induced a redox imbalance in the larvae, marked by an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as well as a reduction in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Furthermore, different alterations in the external morphology of the larvae were associated with the ingestion of CMs. On the other hand, exposure of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) to LC5024h and LC5036h for seven days did not induce any behavioral changes or alterations mutagenic, genotoxic, biochemical, or in the pro- and anti-inflammatory response. Thus, taken together, our study demonstrates for the first time that the use of CMs can constitute a promising strategy in the control of C. quinquefasciatus larvae, combining insecticidal efficiency with an "eco-friendly" approach in the fight against an important mosquito vector of several human diseases. © 2023, The Authors. Indonesia is the second largest contributor of plastic waste in the ocean. The initiative of the central government through KLHK in reducing the generation of plastic waste is to launch a paid plastic bag policy. This policy is regulated by a circular issued by KLHK to local governments and business actors. The purpose of this study is to analyse the implementation of policies, analyse consumer behaviour and analyse the supporting and inhibiting factors in the paid plastic bag policy which is applied in the city of Semarang. The approach used in this study is a qualitative approach. Data collection uses primary and secondary data. The results showed that the paid plastic bag policy had the support of the local government, businesses and consumers. Various efforts have been made as a form of support to reduce waste generation in accordance with the objectives of this policy. Although consumers know and support this policy, it does not change consumer behaviour much. They still use plastic bags from retail when they finish shopping. Consumers have no objections to paying IDR 200. This policy does not bring many significant changes in consumer behaviour in using new plastic bags, despite the tendency of consumers to know the impact of plastic bag waste if it is not managed properly. Consumers still seem indifferent in considering plastic bag waste as an urgent waste priority. So that this policy is still less effective in changing consumer behaviour. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2020.

Future human spaceflight beyond low-Earth orbit will bring substantial changes and new requirements to the development of fully sustainable, healthy indoor human environments across a range of gravitational, radiative, and thermal conditions. One key aspect is understanding (and potentially leveraging) microorganisms that must coexist with humans, plants, and animals in enclosed habitats (their microbiota or microbiomes). Modern, genome-resolved microbiome science provides an opportunity to better understand how we can utilize microbes to optimize space missions and protect human health and well-being long-term. Microorganisms will be critical to mission success due to their direct or indirect interactions with 1) humans, 2) other living systems (e.g., plant and animal life as a food source and for experimentation), and 3) the built environment. For example, the human gut microbiome is a complex community that has important implications for human health and performance that include mental health, nutrition intake, and immune system function. The health of plant microbiomes is also critical for sustainable, dependable, and nutritious food production. Humans, plants, and other living systems (e.g., animals used in experimentation) will also shed microbes into the built environment, which may impact human exposure, plant health, system integrity, and planetary protection from microbial contamination in both forward and reverse directions. Microbes from all three systems will interact, resulting in potentially important 'non-linear' system implications that must be understood for the overall long-term sustainability of hardware, crew, and other living systems. In this study, viability of employing the waste treatment technique for industrial application was conducted by setting up a phytoremediation protocol for field application where heavy metal (Arsenic and Copper) contaminated adsorbents, i.e. coco peat and nanofiber membrane, used for the treatment of wastewater were also included. An arsenic hyperaccumulator, Pityrogramma calomelanos was used for the treatment of mine wastes-tailings, coco peat and nanofiber membrane. Phytoremediation procedure was established by investigating planting parameters namely;plot height - (9 cm and 15 cm) and planting distance- (15 cm and 20 cm) for a period of five months. Translocation factor and % uptake of As and Cu by ferns were measured. According to the results, % uptake of As and Cu by P. Calomelanos was 0.16 % and 0.01 % and translocation factor of As and Cu was 6.78 and 0.04, respectively. Plant growth factors (root length, frond height and dry weight) in tailings mixture plant boxes and control soil were also determined. Accordingly, P. calomelanos grew well in tailings mixture without the symptom of phytotoxicity. Therefore, P. calomelanos can be used for the phytoremediation of the said heavy metal contaminated mine wastes. Based on this study, 15 cm plot height and 20 cm plant distance were suitable for field experiment although long term research data is required. The overall protocol for the treatment of mine wastes as field experiment was proposed based on the results. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

Warming inhibits Increases in Vegetation Net Primary Productivity despite Greening in India

India is the second-highest contributor to the post-2000 global greening. With satellite data, here we show that this 18.51% increase in Leaf Area Index (LAI) during 2001-2019 fails to translate into increased carbon uptake due to warming constraints. Our analysis further shows 6.19% decrease in Net Primary Productivity (NPP) during 2001-2019 over the temporally consistent forests in India despite 6.75% increase in LAI. We identify hotspots of statistically significant decreasing trends in NPP over the key forested regions of Northeast India, Peninsular India, and the Western Ghats. Together, these areas contribute to 31% of the NPP of India (1274.8 *** -1). These regions are the warming hotspots in India. Decreasing photosynthesis and stable respiration, above a threshold temperature, are the key reasons behind the declining NPP. Warming has already started affecting carbon uptake in Indian forests and calls for improved climate resilient forest management practices in a warming world. © 2022, CC BY.

Carbon dots materials (CDs) have the capability in the management of medical waste problem because of its advantage in the detection and degradation of pollutants. The synthesized CDs through various processes and raw materials have been applied to medical wastes, especially antibiotics such as tetracycline (TC), amoxicillin (AMX), para-Nitrophenol (p-NP), doxycycline (DC), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and oxytetracycline (OTC). These antibiotics are detected by utilizing changes in the luminescence property of CDs from the turn-off and turn-on mechanisms. Afterward, the degradation process is conducted using CDs as support materials agent semiconductors in the photosynthesis scheme. In general, CDs can be referred to as multifunction smart materials with the ability to detecting the presence of the antibiotics in simple, sensitive, and selective ways, and potency of medical pollutant removal clearly and effectively. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2020.

ormaldehyde (HCHO) is a significant volatile organic compound (VOC) commonly found in indoor air, leading to serious health implications upon exposure. This study investigates the photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde using Zn or Sn-doped TiO2 as the photocatalyst. Microwave system is used not only for synthesizing aluminum slag and glass but for doping Sn and Zn into zeolite. The results showed that P25-TiO2 nanoparticles annealed at 400°C exhibited a higher intensity of anatase peaks, while TiO2 doped with 0.5 mol% Zn and Sn and annealed at 400°C showed stronger anatase peaks in the XRD patterns. SEM images displayed a surface morphology with fine flakes and flower-like structures after annealing at 400°C for Zn and Sn-doped TiO2, respectively. Photoluminescence analysis indicated that 0.5 mol% Zn-doped TiO2 exhibited a greater red shift and lower intensity. Among the various samples, TiO2 doped with 0.5 mol% Zn demonstrated the optimal photocatalytic efficiency for formaldehyde degradation, achieving the highest degradation efficiency of 75% within 40 minutes. 0.5 mol% Zn-doped TiO2 can effectively enhance the photocatalytic performance and degradation efficiency of formaldehyde due to reducing recombination centers. The hydroxycancrinite mixed TiO2 doped with 0.5 mol% Zn exhibited an increased specific surface area of 95.5 m2 g−1. Under visible light, formaldehyde degradation reached saturation within 20 minutes, resulting in an efficiency of 20.1%. Both photodegradation and adsorption was used for formaldehyde degradation. The study provides the development of efficient materials for indoor air treatment and pollutant degradation. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
