Waste lignin (WL) from the pulp mill and paper was studied for its potential application to prepare the nanoporous carbon with high porosity via carbonization assisted acid activation. The effect of acid activation such as HNO3, HCl, H2SO4, and H3PO4 on lignin transformation to nanoporous carbon investigated. The physicochemical properties of nanoporous carbon were comprehensively characterized through N2 sorption, Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), respectively. N2 sorption revealed that the condition using 5% vol of phosphoric acid activation at carbonization temperature of 700°C for 2 h exhibited the highly porous structure of carbon nanoparticles with a total pore volume of 0.035 cm3 /g. With the properly selecting process variables of waste lignin development could be producing high porosity nanoporous carbon. © 2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

This study aimed to explore the use of ornamental stone waste as a support for the α-MoO₃ catalyst to develop efficient and sustainable heterogeneous systems for biodiesel production. The catalysts were characterized using physicochemical techniques including X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with EDS, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption (BET method), particle size distribution, ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (TPD-NH₃), magnetic measurements, and gas chromatography to analyze simultaneous transesterification/esterification (TES) reactions and quantify methyl and ethyl esters. XRD patterns revealed crystalline phases such as mica-biotite, ferro-tschermakite, albite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates—components of the catalytic support—as well as orthorhombic α-MoO₃ phases, also confirmed in the heterogeneous systems. FTIR and Raman analyses showed characteristic vibrational bands, while SEM images displayed irregular agglomerates, corroborated by TEM. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms indicated mesoporous structures with surface areas ranging from 0.615 to 3.87 m²/g. Particle size analysis showed D₅₀ values between 5.02 and 20.00 μm, with total acidity ranging from 77.0 to 245 µmol/g of NH₃. Magnetic tests indicated ferrimagnetic behavior. The catalytic performance confirmed the effectiveness of the waste as a support for α-MoO₃, particularly in the system containing 40% Mo ions (40%σ-MoO₃:Waste), which achieved conversions between 78% and 95%. These findings highlight the environmental and technological potential of the studied catalysts, reinforcing the economic viability and ecological relevance of reusing industrial waste in the sustainable production of biodiesel from waste oils. © The Author(s) 2025.

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) risk is highly heritable, with potential additional non-genetic factors, such as prenatal exposure to ambient particulate matter with aerodynamic diameterObjectives: This study examined interactions between MIA and prenatal PM2.5 or major PM2.5 components on ASD ***: In a population-based pregnancy cohort of children born between 2001-2014 in Southern California, 318,751 mother-child pairs were followed through electronic medical records (EMR);4,559 children were diagnosed with ASD before age 5. Four broad categories of MIA were classified, including infection, hypertension, maternal asthma, and autoimmune conditions. Average exposures to PM2.5 and four PM2.5 components, black carbon (BC), organic matter (OM), nitrate (NO3−), and sulfate (SO42−), were estimated at maternal residential addresses during pregnancy. We estimated the ASD risk associated with MIA, air pollution, and their interactions, using Cox regression models to adjust for ***: ASD risk was associated with MIA [infection (hazard ratio 1.11;95% confidence interval 1.05-1.18), hypertension (1.30;1.19-1.42), maternal asthma (1.22;1.08-1.38), autoimmune disease (1.19;1.09-1.30)], and with higher pregnancy PM2.5 [1.07;1.03-1.12 per interquartile (3.73 μg/m3) increase] and all four PM2.5 components. However, there were no interactions of each MIA category with PM2.5 or its components on either multiplicative or additive ***: MIA and pregnancy PM2.5 had independent associations with ASD risk. Our findings do not support the hypothesis that ASD risk in children is associated with synergistic effects of MIA during pregnancy and ambient prenatal air pollution. © 2023, The Authors. A versatile wet impregnation method was employed to conveniently and controllably deposit Fe_2O_3 nanoparticles on zeolites including commercial Y, mordenite and ZSM-5 with the similar framework Si/Al ratios and crystal sizes, respectively. The ultrafine Fe_2O_3 nanoparticles in size of 5 nm can be highly dispersed on zeolite Y matrix due to its much better wettability than ZSM-5 and mordenite. By using the obtained Fe_2O_3/zeolite composite as the heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts, the degradation of phenol as a model reaction was systematically investigated, including the zeolite supports, particle size and dispersion of Fe_2O_3, and reaction conditions of H_2O_2 concentration, temperature, and pH value. The catalyst based on zeolite Y with Fe loading of 9% exhibited the best phenol degradation efficiency (> 90%)in neutral pH within 2 h. Its high catalytic activity in Fenton reaction can be attributed to the bifunctional properties of strong surface BrФnsted acidity and high reactivity of octahedral Fe^(3+) in the highlydispersed ultrafine Fe_2O_3 nanoparticles in size of 5 nm, which were the primary active centers to quickly decompose H_2O_2 into hydroxyl radicals. Since phenol degradation can be performed under mild conditions of ambient temperature (283-323 K) and a wide pH range (4.0-7.0), the catalysts can be easily recovered for recyclable use with stable degradation activity, which own the immense potential in deep treatment of organic pollutants in industrial wastewater.

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel produced by chemical reaction between vegetable oil or animal fat with alcohol and catalyst. The preliminary treatment in extraction of biodiesel feedstock is an important process to obtain maximum yield of crude oil. This study aims to find optimal preliminary treatment on extraction of Kemiri Sunan seed in order to produce crude oil with maximum yield and quality. The research investigated the effects of screw press machine rotation and duration of steaming process. Three levels of duration of steaming used were 30, 60 and 90 minutes. Observations of crude oil yield, moisture content, free fatty acid content, kinematic viscosity, density and color were done. The result suggested that the rotation of screw press machine affected the crude oil yield. The duration of steaming process affected the oil yield, free fatty acid content, kinematic viscosity, density and color. The best oil yield result of 70.3% was obtained from the combination of heating duration of 60' and screw rotation of 25 RPM. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused worldwide health constraints. To prevent virus transmission, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) has become one of the necessities of mankind throughout the pandemic. Because of its widespread use and improper disposal, there is an occurrence of PPE litters in various coastal sites around the world. However, the prevalence of these wastes has not been systematically documented in many countries including the Philippines. This study aimed to determine the density, types and accumulation of of PPE litters along the coast of Palawan Island, Philippines. Sampling was done by visual identification and collection of COVID-19 PPE items by walking along the established transects in each sampling site. PPE items collected were classified and sorted into categories. A total of 386 COVID-19 related PPE items were collected over a cumulative area of 48,200 m 2 , with a density of 0.008 items per m 2 . The face mask (98%;n=377) was the predominant type of PPE and out of the total items of face masks, 98% (n=370) were surgical masks while only 2% (n=7) were cloth. On the other hand, the daily density of PPE litters in San Manuel, Puerto Princesa ranged from 0 to 0.099 items per m 2 , with a mean density of 0.008 items per m 2 . The accumulation rates of PPE items ranged from 0.327 items to 1.143 items per day, with an average rate of 0.729 items per day. It was also observed that the prevalence of PPE items decreases over time, however, there was a remarkable increase in PPE density (0.011 items per m 2 ) on day 5 (Monday). Overall, this study revealed that 83% of the coastal sampling sites showed the prevalence of COVID-19 PPE litters. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

BACKGROUND:This study investigated the inflammatory and gut microbiota profile in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD). METHODS:A total of 249 patients undergoing HD and 61 patients on PD participated in the study. The mRNA expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 (NRF2), nuclear factor-κappa B (NF-κB), mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α) were evaluated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) by quantitative real-time PCR. Malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and routine biochemical parameters were also analyzed. The fecal DNA extraction was performed, and the V4 regions of the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene were sequenced. Uremic toxins such as p-cresyl sulfate (p-CS), indoxyl sulfate (IS), and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) plasma levels were determined by HPLC. RESULTS:MDA, IS, and p-CS levels were lower in PD than in HD patients. The mRNA expression of the transcription factors was not different between groups. Gut microbial α-diversity indices showed no significant difference between groups, but the β-diversity was different in PD patients. Members of the genera Meditarraneibacter, Roseburia, Agathobacter, Anaerobutyricum, Collinsella, Streptococcus, Clostridium, and Bacteroides, as well as the families Lachnospiraceae and Enterobacteriaceae, appear to be positively correlated with most dietary factors, particularly lipid and phosphorus intake. CONCLUSION:Our findings indicate that in patients with CKD on HD, there is increased plasma retention of uremic toxins and reduced gut microbial diversity compared to PD patients.

Indonesia had been suffered by earthquake and tsunami for many centuries. Since many lives have taken by tsunami strikes, alert and response system are very important as important part of Disaster Risk Reduction, especially in area with high population density. This research conducted in Kangkung fishing village in Bandar Lampung coastal area which is an earthquake and tsunami prone area. The aim of the research is to study alert and response of Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction. The research conducted by qualitative method and purposive-descriptive approach. There were 53 respondents which participated in the survey and interview. It is reported that 'Smart Resilient City' model suitable for community needs of alert and response of earthquake and tsunami disaster. This research meets conclusion that 'Smart Resilient City' model may become a great solution in Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction to cope with the hazard of earthquake and tsunami comprehensively and sustainably.

Universal mechanical response of metallic glasses during strain-rate-dependent uniaxial compression

Experimental data on the compressive strength σmax versus strain rate Ε eng for metallic glasses undergoing uniaxial compression shows significantly different behavior for different alloys. For some metallic glasses, σmax decreases with increasing Ε eng, for others, σmax increases with increasing Ε eng, and for others σmax versus Ε eng is nonmonotonic. Using numerical simulations of metallic glasses undergoing uniaxial compression at nonzero strain rate and temperature, we show that they obey a universal relation for the compressive strength versus temperature, which determines their mechanical response. At low Ε eng, increasing strain rate leads to increases in temperature and decreases in σmax∗, whereas at high Ε eng, increasing strain rate leads to decreases in temperature and increases in σmax∗. This non-monotonic behavior of σmax∗ versus temperature causes the nonmonotonic behavior of σmax∗ versus Ε eng. Variations in the internal dissipation change the characteristic strain rate at which the nonmonotonic behavior occurs. These results are general for a wide range of metallic glasses with different atomic interactions, damping coefficients, and chemical compositions. © 2022, CC BY.

Modification of anion exchanger polymeric material via impregnation with binary metal oxide from Fe and Mn (HA502P-Fe/Mn) was achieved via two-step mixed metal oxide precipitation using 50:50% DI:ethanol as solvent for the purpose of removing trace inorganic arsenic (i.e., concentrations two orders of greatness less than that of background ions) to levels below the common regulatory limit of 10 µg/L. Both arsenic species [As(III)] and [As(V)] were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacities of HA502P-Fe/Mn toward As(III) and As(V) were 21,590 and 22,830 µg/g, respectively. The kinetics of As(III) removal were best predicted (R 2 = 0.986) using a pseudo-second order model (k2 = 0.001 g/µg As(III)· min). The HA502P-Fe/Mn was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Adsorption mechanisms were further characterized using synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (both XANES and EXAFS) including a comparison with the density functional theory (DFT) data. The obtained XANES results showed complex redox transformation of the adsorbed As(V) on HA502P-Fe/Mn. The EXAFS spectra indicate predominant formation of bidentate mononuclear edge-sharing (2 E) complexes for Mn-As, and bidentate binuclear corner-sharing (2 C) complexes for Fe-As on HA502P-Fe/Mn surfaces. Based on the DFT simulation, the obtained 3D structure showing interaction between As and Fe/Mn were optimized and comparable with the information obtained from EXAFS technique. These characterizations provided novel insights into the mechanisms of arsenic removal, identifying the formation of inner-sphere complexes between arsenic and HA502P-Fe/Mn surfaces. The experiments demonstrated the ability of the binary hydroxide resin to simultaneously oxidize As(III) and adsorb As(V), making HA502P-Fe/Mn a promising novel adsorbent for arsenic removal owing its relatively high As adsorption capacity and ability to be regene
